Dan Hooker wants to be the one to give Michael Chandler his welcome in the UFC.

Chandler was recently signed by the UFC and will serve as the backup for the UFC 254 main event that features a lightweight title unification fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje.

It’s certainly a big statement from the UFC on how they feel about the former Bellator lightweight champion and now that Hooker knows how the promotion views him, he is more than willing to fight Chandler first.

“Well, it was hard when people were speculating it and saying about the fight, it’s hard to know how much stock the UFC is putting into someone that’s coming from another organization,” Hooker told Submission Radio of his thoughts on Chandler. “But for him to now be signed to the organization and being the fill-in for the title shot, now I know.

“Now I’m certain of how much stock [they’re putting in]. The UFC is putting a lot of stock in on this kid. So, I would love to be the guy to welcomes him to the UFC, knees his chin off, sends him back to the B-Leagues.”

Hooker: We’re On A Different Level

That’s not to say Hooker doesn’t rate Chandler as a fighter.

However, he believes Chandler is not on the same level as the truly elite fighters in the UFC lightweight division.

“He’s good, he’s game, he’s a quality fighter,” Hooker added. “That’s not any knock on his skill or any knock on his ability, but I feel like we’re just a different calibre. He’s just gonna be welcomed to a different calibre of fighter.”

UFC lightweight Dan Hooker has given his thoughts on how he sees this weekend’s middleweight title bout between Israel Adesanya and Paulo Costa unfolding. The two undefeated fighters will meet in the main event of UFC 253 this Sat. September 26 inside the Flash Forum in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.

“What can I say about this? Too much weights, not enough speed work. I feel like this is going to be a very one-sided fight. I do not feel like this is going to be the biggest test of Israel’s career. I feel like Paulo Costa is too limited of a striker,” Hooker said.

” He accepts wearing a few shots to give a few shots, which will work against another limited striker, but when you’re against a guy like Israel Adesanya, who can pick his shots better than anybody in the world. And your standing across from that guy, you let him hit you. He will break you down.

“You let him hit you, he will hurt you, he will pick you apart, and he will stop you coming forward.”

This weekend’s title fight is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated fights of 2020, and one that MMA fans around the world will be tuning in for.

Chael Sonnen Suggests Dan Hooker As Possible Opponent For Tony Ferguson

Sonnen

Tony Ferguson will not be fighting Dustin Poirier at UFC 254 after the UFC and Poirier could not come to an agreement on pay, but Chael Sonnen has an idea on who Ferguson should fight.

“I think you have a couple of likely suspects,” Sonnen said while discussing potential Ferguson opponents in a video posted to his YouTube channel (via BJPENN). “Dan Hooker,” he added later, revealing his pick. “Dan Hooker versus Tony Ferguson.”

Chael Sonnen believes Hooker deserves the fight, especially due to the fact of how exciting his last fight went.

“We’re in a sport in a space that is about being given an opportunity,” he said. “You are given nothing else in this sport except an opportunity. Could you imagine Hooker goes out there, he comes up short against Poirier, Poirier doesn’t want the opportunity [against Ferguson] for whatever reason, Hooker goes and takes it. Hooker ends up getting the opportunity even though he lost his previous match, because the guy that won the match doesn’t want it. That’s the way sports work. If you are in a tournament and you don’t show up to the mat, there is now a forfeit and that other person will move on.

“If I were to predict who will be called and offered that fight [with Ferguson]—it’s purely a prediction, I haven’t talked to anyone at all—I would like to go ahead and float the idea past you, see what you think of Ferguson versus Hooker.”

Dan Hooker is coming off a decision loss to Dustin Poirier in June in what is considered one of the best fights of 2020. Tony Ferguson, meanwhile, is coming off a TKO loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC 249 for the interim lightweight title.

Whether or not Ferguson vs. Hooker will be the fight is to be seen. But, Dana White made it clear he is looking to keeo Ferguson on the card.

Lightweight contender Dan Hooker is more than willing to replace Dustin Poirier and fight Tony Ferguson according to his coach Eugene Baremen. ‘The Diamond’ was supposed to square off against Ferguson at UFC 254 on October 24 but that fight has fallen through as Poirier failed to come to financial terms with the UFC for the bout.

Speaking to Submission Radio The Head Coach from Auckland’s City Kickboxing revealed Hooker is willing to square off against Ferguson at UFC 254 although he would advise against it, he said.

“October is a bit early for us, otherwise we would jump in there straight away for sure. But if they can push it back. Dan just got off concussion protocol now, so of this week. So, he’s only just started back training. So, obviously October might be a hard push. He would do it. I would have to talk him out of it, but he would probably do it one hundred percent. But Dan’s just back now, he’s getting fit again, it’s good to have him back in the gym. So, yeah, if they can’t come to terms, and it sounds like they haven’t come to terms, then we’ll jump in there and fight Tony for sure.”

Hooker is coming off a loss to Poirier last time out. The two lightweight fighters went to war over five round with the former interim lightweight champion edging it out on the judge’s scorecards.

‘El Cuccy’ also suffered defeat in his last outing. The TUF champion snapped his 12-fight win streak against late-replacement opponent Justin Gaethje at UFC 249 in May. Ferguson was originally set to finally square off against lightweight king Khabib Nurmagomedov before the coronavirus pandemic derailed those plans. The 36-year-old instead squared off against Gaethje who put on a striking clinic before ultimately getting the fifth round TKO victory over Ferguson.
