Daniel Cormier is not thrilled with Nick Diaz vs. Vicente Luque booking: 'This is a much more dangerous fight'

Daniel Cormier is not thrilled with news of Nick Diaz’s return.

Earlier this week, UFC CEO Dana White shocked everyone when he revealed that the Stockton, California native would step back inside the Octagon for the first time since a 2021 scrap with ‘Ruthless’ Robbie Lawler. Diaz is set to square off with No. 14 ranked welterweight contender Vicente Luque on August 3 when the promotion delivers a star-studded Fight Night card in Abu Dhabi.

Nick Diaz vs. Luque

Sharing his thoughts on the announcement with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, Cormier admitted to being initially excited by the news. After all, it’s not often that you get to see Nick Diaz strap on the four-ounce gloves.

“I was very shocked,” Cormier said. “After watching Nick Diaz compete the last time, I was like, ‘Okay, he’s done.’ But when I heard the news, I was excited! I got so excited because it’s like how often do we get an opportunity to see a guy that meant so much to us? I watched him in Strikeforce, I do all that.”

However, Cormier’s excitement quickly turned to worry after he realized who Diaz would be fighting.

“Now, the matchup, that’s a little worrisome for me because Robbie Lawler seemed to be at the same stage in his career as him. Vicente Luque is not there. This is a much more dangerous fight for Nick Diaz. I just hope that he shows a better form this time. Honestly, man, excitement because I get to see a guy that I’ve watched for a long time. Confusion in terms of who the matchup is. Tony Ferguson’s fighting on the card, too. Put them together. That makes more sense to me.”

Nick Diaz seeks his first win in more than a dozen years

After building an impressive 11-fight win streak, Diaz lost three straight between 2012 and 2015, coming up short against Carlos Condit, Georges St-Pierre, and Anderson Silva, though his fight against ‘The Spider’ was later overturned to a no contest after Silva tested positive for anabolic steroids.

Fans wouldn’t see Diaz return until eight years later when he booked a fight with UFC Hall of Famer Robbie Lawler at UFC 266. As excited as fans were to see the former Strikeforce titleholder back, his performance left a lot to be desired. After taking a beating in the first two rounds, Diaz threw in the towel 44 seconds into the third.

He’ll face an even tougher test this time out when he squares off with a top-15 contender who carries with him 19 career finishes against 22 total wins.

Conor McGregor to earn title fight with a win over Michael Chandler at UFC 303? Daniel Cormier thinks so

Conor McGregor will earn himself a title fight with a win over Michael Chandler.

That comes according to UFC Hall of Famer who delivered the hot take during a recent episode of his EPSN show Good Guy/Bad Guy alongside co-host Chael Sonnen. However, if McGregor comes up short during International Fight Week, ‘DC’ hopes to see him saddled with Tony Ferguson.

“If he gets through Michael Chandler, I say give him a title fight,” Cormier said. “Put him in there with [Dustin] Poirier or [Islam] Makhachev on Mexican Independence Day or some time soon thereafter. If he loses, put him in there with Tony Ferguson.

Tony Ferguson deserves to have that big platform the last time to see if he can go and do what he said he was going to do to Conor all of those times and so long ago.”

McGregor will step inside the Octagon for the first time in nearly three years on Saturday, June 29 when he headlines UFC 303 against the former Bellator MMA champion.

Conor McGregor

With their bout taking place at 170 pounds, it’s hard to imagine ‘Mystic Mac’ securing a lightweight title opportunity even with the most impressive of wins, but it certainly sounds like welterweight king Leon Edwards is down for a scrap with the former two-division champ, so there’s that.

Are we headed toward conor mcGregor vs. Dustin Poirier 4?

As far as the lightweight division goes, fans will see Islam Makhachev put the 155-pound strap on the line at UFC 302 when he meets three-time Conor McGregor opponent Dustin Poirier inside the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Poirier vs. Makhachev

Poirier is walking into his third shot at UFC gold with a do-or-die attitude, suggesting that it’s either win or go home against the ‘Dagestani Destroyer’ in The Garden State.

Who knows, maybe the stars will align and we’ll see both McGregor and Poirier walk away winners, setting the stage for a fourth meeting between the two MMA icons — even if Poirier insists that ship has sailed.

Jon Jones warned about title fight with Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 he is a killer and he will put you out

Jon Jones has leaked he is set to fight Stipe Miocic in November at UFC 309, however, former foe, Daniel Cormier – has claimed if Jones is overlooking his soon-to-be common-foe, he might be in store for a massive upset knockout defeat.

Jones, a current heavyweight champion and prior two-time gold holder at the light heavyweight limit, has been sidelined since he headlined UFC 285 back in March, landing the vacant heavyweight crown with a dominant first round guillotine choke win over Ciryl Gane.

As for Miocic, the Ohio native, who himself has twice held spoils at the heavyweight limit, has been out of action since 2021, dropping a second round knockout loss to promotional veteran, Francis Ngannou in the pair’s championship rematch.

Jon Jones warned about underestimating Stipe Miocic

And revealing on social media last week how he is all but signed to return at UFC 309 in November at Madison Square Garden, Rochester native, Jones has been warned to do everything but overlook Miocic, by former opponent, Cormier.

Police say Jon Jones claimed drug testing agent fabricated a story amid use of expletive language

“He (Jon Jones) said Stipe (Miocic) is old – sounds like Jon Jones is wanting to fight the highest grossing fight with the least amount of risk,” Daniel Cormier said on his YouTube channel. “But I will warn you this, don’t overlook Stipe Miocic. He is a f*cking killer, and if you overlook him, he will you out.”

As well as Jones’ expected title tangle with Miocic at the end of this annum, the division’s interim title – currently held by British favorite, Tom Aspinall, is up for grabs at UFC 304 in July, as he takes on perennial contender, Curtis Blaydes in the pair’s title rematch in Manchester – a pairing which Jones openly mocked.

Daniel Cormier roasts Joaquin Buckley following criticism of cringey Conor McGregor callout

Daniel Cormier is going to take any of Joaquin Buckley’s sh*t.

After scoring his fourth-straight win via a unanimous decision over Nursulton Ruziboev at UFC St. Louis, ‘New Mansa’ delivered a cringeworthy callout of Irish megastar Conor McGregor, calling the former two-division champion a “hoe” and dragging his mother and father into the insult.

Offering his thoughts on a recent episode of ESPN’s Good Buy/Bad Guy with co-host Chael Sonnen, Cormier dubbed it the worst callout of all time.

Daniel Cormier

Michael Bisping, who was the one conducting the post-fight interview, also slammed Buckley’s comments in a UFC St. Louis reaction video on YouTube, saying:

“He went too far. He’s trying to be insulting and give McGregor a reason to want to fight him. He was calling his mom and grandma a hoe, basically. I like a bit of a sh*t talk, and then when he went that far, I’m like, ‘Oh, this is bad.’”

Needless to say, Joaquin Buckley didn’t take kindly to the criticism.

Let this be known @dc_mma @bisping @ChaelSonnen Ya mommas raised some hoes!!!!! Yall really trying to twist up my words knowing damn well what I said in that cage but it’s ok we can all have some fun,” Buckley wrote on X.

It didn’t take long for Cormier to snap back with a response unbecoming of the typically mild-mannered Hall of Famer.

“Shut up Pussy! Maybe listen,” Cormier replied. “You had a dumb ass call out. You’re getting talked about by 3 of the biggest voices in the game. Maybe listen. It was the worst call out in history. Don’t let winning at few fights at 170lbs get you too excited bruh. Don’t mention Audrey!”

Joaquin Buckley squanders a golden opportunity

By all accounts, Joaquin Buckley’s callout of Conor McGregor was nothing more than a waste of mic time. After earning a big win in his hometown, ‘New Mansa’ could have used it as a star-making moment. Instead, he went for the biggest fish in the pond which is never a good idea when you’ve barely outgrown being a guppy.

Four days removed from fight night, McGregor himself is yet to respond to Buckley’s callout. That alone should tell you everything you need to know about Buckley’s chances of ever stepping inside the Octagon with ‘Mystic Mac.’

Daniel Cormier rips magician in manipulation Jon Jones after UFC star mocks his title run

Once more rekindling his rivalry with two-fight rival, Jon Jones, former two-weight champion, Daniel Cormier has labelled the Rochester native a “magician in manipulation” – after his light heavyweight title reign was called into question.

Cormier, a former undisputed light heavyweight and heavyweight titleholder, shared a two-fight rivalry with arch-nemesis, Jones over the course of their Octagon tenures, fighting to a decision loss, before a high-kick KO loss was overturned to an official ‘No Contest’ in their 2017 rematch.

Hitting out at the Lafayette veteran’s title “run” during his time away from the sport amid multiple high-profile issues with anti-doping discretions, Jones called into question the legitimacy of Cormier’s championship reigns.

“UFC is a brilliant company, did what they had to do to save the event,” Jon Jones posted on his official X account in reply to a user. “But I do agree with you, it definitely confused a bunch of UK fans, got them entitled thinking their boy really is the champion. It reminds me of when ‘DC’ was the “champion” during my absence.”

Reacting to Jones’ comments on his title reign at 205lbs, Cormier labelled the former pound-for-pound number one a “magician in manipulation”.

Daniel Cormier hits back at long-time foe, Jon Jones

“It’s not the same, although it may seem the same,” Daniel Cormier said on his YouTube channel. “He (Jon Jones) was incapable of competing when I was the champion. He wasn’t allowed to compete, not due to injury, due to illegal substances found in his body, that’s just the truth… that’s my response. Jones – it wasn’t the same thing, bud. So, no matter how quickly you are – and the magician you are at manipulating and saying this and the other, that’s not the case.”

“It was different, you couldn’t compete whenever I was fighting,” Daniel Cormier explained. “I was the champion, for a really long time actually, which is kind of crazy.”

Daniel Cormier slams Joaquin Buckley for mocking Conor McGregor's mom that was horrible

Former UFC champ-champ Daniel Cormier doesn’t like Joaquin Buckley trashing Conor McGregor’s mom after his UFC St. Louis win.

Buckley defeated Nursulton Ruziboev by decision in the co-main event, in a fight that came together on short notice after he called to be on the card. After the win, Buckley decided to call out McGregor but did it in a way that many fans were not happy with.

“I researched the McGregor name and you come from a long, long line of McHo*s. Your dad was a b***h. Your grandfather was a p***y. Your great-great-grandfather was a p***y. So, I guess it’s safe to say that your mom was a p***y. And guess what? If you don’t answer, and I’ll bet the money I don’t even have that you won’t, everyone will know I’m telling the truth,” Buckley said.

To no surprise, McGregor did not respond to the callout while UFC CEO Dana White shut down any chance of that fight happening.

Cormier, meanwhile, didn’t like the callout one bit as he thinks Buckley took it way too far.

“That was horrible, how do you do that? I just don’t know what he was doing. Then he goes and he calls Conor McGregor’s mom a bad name. It couldn’t have gotten worse. It was bad,” Daniel Cormier said on Good Guy vs Bad Guy (via YardBarker).

Whether or not McGregor will respond to Buckley’s callout is uncertain.

Joaquin Buckley turns attention to Gilbert Burns

After Joaquin Buckley’s win at UFC St. Louis, he admitted he knew he wouldn’t be getting the fight with Conor McGregor.

Instead, Buckley has now turned his attention to a former welterweight title challenger in the form of Gilbert Burns.

“Gilbert Burns, I think it’s a beautiful fight,” Buckley said. “A beautiful match-up. I don’t know when he’s going to be cleared or when he’s going to be ready, but Gilbert Burns, definitely.”

Joaquin Buckley is 19-6 as a pro and is 9-4 in the UFC, but is a perfect 4-0 since dropping down to welterweight.
