Derrick Lewis set to headline UFC St. Louis in fight against Rodrigo Nascimento on May 11.

Former title challenger, Derrick Lewis is set for his return to the Octagon in the main event of UFC Fight Night St. Louis – taking on the surging number fifteen ranked contender, Rodrigo Nascimento on May 11. from the Enterprise Center in Missouri.

Lewis, the current number twelve ranked heavyweight contender, has been sidelined since he took a short-notice main event fight with Jailton Almeida at UFC Sao Paulo back in November, suffering a one-sided unanimous decision loss to the Brazilian.

As for Nascimento, the former Dana White’s Contender Series product has enjoyed a three-fight winning run of late, wrapping up a decision win over Don’Tale Mayes back in November on the same card as Lewis’ loss to Almeida.

UFC confirmed the main event fight between Derrick Lewis and Rodrigo Nascimento on their official X account tonight.

“Top 15 heavyweights will duke it out in St. Louis,” UFC posted. “@TheBeast_UFC vs. @Zecolmeiiia is your #UFCStLouis main event!”

Prior to his loss to Almeida in South America, former undisputed and interim heavyweight title challenger, Lewis had turned in a first round TKO win over Marcos Rogerio de Lima in July of last year, snapping a run of three consecutive stoppage losses to Tai Tuivasa, Sergei Pavlovich, and Serghei Spivak.

For Nascimento, the 11-1(1) professional, suffered his sole professional loss in a KO defeat to common-foe, Chris Daukaus, which came before a TKO win over Alan Baudot was overturned to an official ‘No Contest’ after the Brazilian tested positive for ritalinic acid.

Landing six submission wins throughout his professional career, during his brief Octagon tenure, Nascimento has turned in two wins over the above-mentioned, Mayes, as well as split judging successes against Tanner Boser, and Ilir Latifi.

Former The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 17 finalist Uriah Hall was scheduled to take on Vitor Belfort in the co-main event of last weekend’s (Jan. 14, 2018) UFC Fight Night 124, but the bout was scrapped just a day before the event after Hall was forced to withdraw due to health reasons.

Upon the news, many had speculated that Hall had failed to make weight, but that wasn’t the case.

In fact, he did make weight, but he recently revealed that he suffered a ‘mini-seizure’ and a ‘slight heart attack’:

“For the record, I did make weight, I just failed to make it to the scale, which sucked,” Hall said on Instagram Live (via MMA Junkie). “I think I had a mini-seizure and at the same time a slight heart attack. My kidneys were just not good. The doctor even said, even if I made weight, I probably would’ve died the next day because my body wasn’t having it.”

After the event. UFC President Dana White said that he’d hear rumors indicating that Hall simply wasn’t taking things seriously. Hall, however, laughed those claims off, labeling them as nothing more than ‘speculation’.

Prior to his scheduled fight with Belfort, Hall had lost three of his previous four bouts, dropping losses to Robert Whittaker, Derek Brunson and Gegard Mousasi before picking up a victory over Krzystof Jotko.

Dana White Reveals Uriah Hall Was ‘Partying In L.A. Clubs’ Before Missing Weight

The MMA world lost a potentially hard-hitting co-main event between Uriah Hall and Vitor Belfort at last night’s (Sun. January 14, 2017) UFC St. Louis when Hall was unable to weigh in and forced to withdraw from the bout following a scary scene where he reportedly fainted and had a seizure.

The tough last-minute withdrawal put the frightening weight-cutting practices of the sport into the crosshairs yet again, and many asked if the UFC needed to make more effort to curb such drastic cuts and the subsequent adverse effects they have on a growing number of high-profile bouts.

However, if we’re to believe UFC president Dana White, Hall’s situation wasn’t one of just the weight cut becoming a health issue. According to the UFC exec in a post-fight scrum via MMA Fighting, Hall wasn’t taking his training at the UFC Performance Insitute in Las Vegas seriously, and had even gone as far as going to Los Angeles to party a week before his fight with Belfort:

“I have a very long relationship with Uriah, I like him very much personally. But the guy’s at the UFC (Performance Institutute) said he doesn’t take it serious. He doesn’t take his training serious, he doesn’t do what anybody tells him. He does his own thing.

“A week before the fight, he went to L.A. and was hanging out in L.A. in clubs and stuff. So, not good. So I’m going to talk to him, he texted me tonight. He’ s back in his room, obviously he’s not good, and if you don’t cut weight the right way and you don’t do what you’re supposed to do, this is what happens.”

The discussion about weight cutting and the issues created by it will most likely continue to grow larger, but White insisted there are more healthy ways to cut weight.

For the fighters who are unable to do it the right way, he said, the best decision is to move up a weight class in hopes of recreating their careers as several fighters such as Rafael dos Anjos have in recent years:

“What I think they need to think about is fight at 205. Fight at 205 or show up and do what you’re supposed to do. There’s ways to cut weight properly and safely. You need to start doing that. That’s why we are encouraging everybody to come to the UFC Performance Institute. These guys down there, all the people that go there and do what they’re told to do and do it the right way, cut weight safely.

“The guys who don’t listen, this is what happens. And much like the Kelvin Gastelums and the Johny Hendricks and the other people out there – if you can’t make that weight, then fight at a higher weight division.”
