Darren Till is hoping to fight the worst version of former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker next month. A few weeks ago it was announced the 185lb contenders would headline a ‘Fight Island’ card on July 25. Speaking to former middleweight champion Michael Bisping and comedian Luis J Gomez on a recent episode of the ‘Believe You Me’ podcast Till explained why he wants to face the worst version of Whittaker, he said.
“I’m expecting either amazing Rob or I’m expecting Rob that doesn’t believe himself so much anymore. I’m preparing for either or. Obviously, most fighters would say, well I want the best Rob. No. I want the worst Rob, make it easier for me. I don’t know what Rob we’re gonna expect. We’ve been having a good back and forth for a while now, it’s been really fun. So whatever Rob comes. I will say I’ve been preparing during [the] lockdown and while maybe it’s coming to an end maybe it’s not, Fight Island’s on the horizon. Got six weeks to fight for five rounds.”
“I hope to f**k he doesn’t show up to my fight,” he said. “Easy win, easy money [laughs].” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)
Whittaker hasn’t fought since losing his title to current middleweight king Israel Adesanya at UFC 243 in October 2019. ‘The Last Stylebender’ stopped Whittaker inside two rounds to claim UFC gold. Whittaker has since had an extended break from fighting after suffering burn out.
Meanwhile, Till stepped up in weight for his last fight after suffering back to back stoppage losses. Till fell to a submission defeat against Tyron Woodley in a failed welterweight title bid. He then got knocked out by Jorge Masvidal in front of his home fans. ‘The Gorilla’ returned to winning ways by beating Kelvin Gastelum over three rounds at UFC 244 to establish himself as one to watch at 185lbs.

Till is set to face former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker in an upcoming Fight Island event on July 25 in Abu Dhabi.
Having won in his middleweight debut against Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 244 in November, Till could quickly find himself in title contention if he emerges victorious against Whittaker.
And this time, he plans on going all the way when it comes to earning UFC gold, having failed at his first attempt in his welterweight title fight with Tyron Woodley back in September 2018.
“One day before my failed world title attempt in 2018, I will not fail again. 
#PushingLimitsThisWeek,” Till wrote in a recent Instagram post.
Should things work out, Till could find himself facing current middleweight champion Israel Adesanya in what should be a striker’s delight.
And despite his friendship and banter with Adesanya, the Liverpool native is certainly confident of his chances of walking out as the new middleweight king once they collide.
“Listen mate, we are going to fight. I don’t care what anyone says; we are going to fight and the best man will win,” Till said last month. “I believe I will beat him and I will become the middleweight champion. We will fight. It will be for the culture, for the fans and for the people — the culture of Muay Thai, kickboxing, everything.
“It’s going to be epic, but until then, I’ve got no hard feeling towards that man. I’m going to punch a hole through his face and he’s probably going to punch one through mine. He gets the joke, he gets the banter, he gets that we’re frienemies. Let’s make this f*cking fight massive.”

Top middleweight contender Darren Till will square off against former champion Robert Whittaker on July 25 according to a report from Raphael Marinho of Combate.
Per the report, the high stakes middleweight match-up will take place on ‘Fight Island’ and be in the main event slot. The pair were originally set to meet at a UFC Dublin event in August, but they will now meet at a location to be confirmed a few weeks earlier.
Till is coming off a huge win in his middleweight debut. The scouser beat former title challenger Kelvin Gastelum over three rounds at UFC 244 in his divisional debut. This win helped him rebound from back-to-back losses that closed out his previously impressive welterweight run.
Whittaker on the other hand comes into this fight off the back of a devastating defeat against Israel Adesanya. ‘The Last Stylebender’ dropped and stopped Whittaker inside two rounds at UFC 243. Since then the Australian stand out has taken some time away from the sport after suffering from burnout.
The winner of this July 25 fight will most likely be next in line for a middleweight title shot after Adesanya defends his belt against Brazilian knockout artist Paulo Costa.

Fan favourite Mike Perry has gone after middleweight contender Darren Till in a foul-mouthed rant. ‘Platinum’ is clearly unhappy with some comments the former title challenger has made about his girlfriend.
Till took to social media earlier this week to crudely call out his long-time frenemy Perry. In a foul-mouthed tweet of his own the Scouser suggested the pair settle their differences on ‘Fight Island’ before taking some uncalled for shot at his girlfriend, he wrote.
“Why don’t me & this fat c-nt just fight on fight island to settle our differences? He’s only a fat mess & when I smash his jaw clean off I’m gonna raw dog his bird, Fuchken MuPPet!!”
Speaking to MMA Junkie, Perry reacted angrily to the comments made by Till and seemed to become unhinged when talking about a potential fight between the two, he said.
“I wanna (expletive) Darren Till’s mom, too – (expletive) Darren Till. I want to fight Darren Till. I want to fight him, then I want to jump out the cage like Khabib (Nurmagomedov) did and jump kick his mom in the face. (Expletive) Darren Till.
“He’s a (expletive) piece of (expletive). He’s a (expletive). There’s nothing wrong with being a (expletive) unless you just like sucking (expletive). That’s cool. He likes to suck (expletive). That’s why he wanted to go to the spa. (Expletive) him. Excuse my language if that’s terrible, but I hate that mother(expletive’s) guts. I don’t like when people say certain things.”
Perry went on the recount his infamous sparring session with Till. The welterweight knockout artist claiming he got the better of the Englishman and would be willing to do the same again in a middleweight match-up later this summer, he said.
“I busted his eye open when we sparred that one time. He has some heavy hips, I’ll tell him that. Because he’s a fat piece of (expletive) so his hips were heavy. His feet were glued to the (expletive) floor, but I busted his eye up, and I (expletive) him about 20 times with combinations, little pity pats to the face. He was easy to hit, it’s like he was a statute sitting still, and I was dancing around him then he tried to shoot on me, and I kneed him in the (expletive) eye, and he was bleeding in that little picture we took. You ask him about sparring with Mike Perry.”
“It doesn’t line up as well, because I’m 185 pounds right now,” Perry said. “If he wants to cut weight to 185, I’ll fight his ass at 185. I’ll try to put a couple pounds on, and I’ll be faster than him, and he’ll be a fat piece of (expletive). (Expletive) him.”
“June, July – I’m ready,” Perry said. “Tomorrow, tonight, yesterday, the next day. It don’t matter, bro.”
