It was reported last week that UFC 309 this Saturday would be down a fight unless a replacement opponent could be found on short notice. David Onama was set to face Lucas Almeida on the prelims at Madison Square Garden.

This would have been Almeida’s fifth appearance in the Octagon following a win last time out in June over Timmy Cuamba via a unanimous decision. Unfortunately, Almeida withdrew from the fight and the UFC started looking for someone else to face Onama.

Fans were getting concerned after not hearing anything for close to a week until it was announced, just days out from fight night, that Mexico’s Roberto Romero will be stepping in to make his UFC debut. Romero’s management Iridium Sports Agency made the new official via their social media channels.

At 24-years old, Romero has built a pro record of 8-3-1. His last eight fights all came under the Combate Global banner where he won six fights in a row, with one draw in between, before suffering a decision loss to Ireland’s Patrick Lehane last December. He went on to rebound with a first round submission win over Takahiro Ashida this past July.

He will now face Uganda’s Onama on November 16 as the 30-year old looks to build on his back-to-back wins inside the Octagon, including a bonus-winning knockout over Gabriel Santos last year. This now puts the card at a total of 13 fights for the promotion’s return to the world’s most famous arena following a few changes in opponents and a cancelled fight.

Nate Landwehr, David Onama in thrilling barn-burner – UFC San Diego Highlights

Nate Landwehr snapped rising prospect David Onama’s two-fight win streak at UFC on ESPN 41.

Going into the bout as one of the hottest stocks in the promotion, Onama was looking to extend his winning run with a victory over Landwehr, who was even with two wins and two losses in his last four outings. They clashed at the co-main event of UFC Fight Night: Vera vs. Cruz at Pechanga Arena in San Diego, California.

Onama started off strong with relentless pressure. His striking abilities were on full display as he knocked down Landwehr with a crushing right hand in the first round. Landwehr rallied back in the second to land some big shots of his own. Onama appeared to have slowed down due to fatigue in round two and Landwehr took full advantage of that. Landwehr had a really close submission but Onama managed to slip away. After two thrilling rounds, both men gave their all inside the octagon in the final round.

Landwehr defeated Onama after going the distance by majority decision.

Slated to return to the Octagon this weekend in a high-profile UFC Fight Night San Diego co-main event, exciting featherweight contender, David Onama believes a barn burning back-and-forth with rescheduled opponent, Nate Landwehr is in store – following a prior failed March matchup.

Onama, who currently boasts an impressive 10-1 professional record, made his leap to the UFC back in October of last year, holding his own in a tough, back-and-forth bow against former duel-weight Cage Warriors champion, Mason Jones.

Scoring a pair of impressive finishes since then, Onama turned in a vicious and violent knockout win over Gabriel Benitez back in February – landing a first round strikes stoppage after a barrage at the fence.

Just last month, Onama stopped Garreth Armfield with a second round arm-triangle midway through the penultimate frame.

Previewing his upcoming co-headliner with Landwehr during a recent interview with LowKick MMA reporter, Alex Behunin, Onama praised the ability and excitement factor that the former M-1 Global featherweight titleholder brings.

“As an opponent, I think Nate (Landwehr) is very, very – he’s a tough fighter,” David Onama said. “The guy is very durable, man. He walks people down, he stays in your face. He fights. He’s one of those fighters who is hard to take out, you know. There’s fighters that you can take out easy, but he’s one of those who is gonna bang and he’s gonna let you know, ‘I’m here to fight’ – not just one of these guys who you’re gonna put out.”

“That right there excites me, ‘cause I’m the same f*cking way,” David Onama said. “I’m like, ‘Awh, f*ck, you like this sh*t? I like it too’. That motherf*cking style, I like that sh*t. I like fighting those tough guys, ‘cause if you’re a tough fighter, I’m also gonna be tough too, you know what I mean. … If I feel like you’re not where I’m at, or you’re not on my level, there’s not a competition there for me. … I can’t f*cking wait, man, it’s gonna be f*cking awesome.”

David Onama elected against providing a distinct prediction for the anticipated clash

Quite the animated character, Onama maintains he’s ready for the “intense” persona and style Landwehr brings – particularly at the pre-fight weigh-ins.

“I’m a ‘weigh-ins guy’, I love the weigh-ins more than fighting,” David Onama said. “Like, fight night, I love it too, but weigh-ins, that’s my sh*t. We gonna see, you know what I mean. I love weigh-ins, I love the matchup – it’s a great fight for me. I’m sure Nate loves it too because we’re both similar. And it’s a sold out show, man – that’s f*cking awesome, bro.”

Austin Lingo, David Onama

UFC featherweight Austin Lingo has revealed his upcoming bout against David Onama to be the last fight on his UFC contract.

Lingo will take on Onama this July 9 at UFC on ESPN: Dos Anjos vs. Fiziev. Both fighters will go into the match looking to separate their records by a win as they share their current standing of nine wins and a loss.

In a recent interview with LowKick MMA, Austin Lingo talked about how he sees the matchup against Onama to play out. ‘Lights Out’ does not believe the fight will go the distance and is confident in his finishing abilities.

Austin Lingo wants a finish

When suggested by interviewer James Lynch about the fight not going to the judges’ scorecards for decision, Lingo responded affirmatively, “I do, definitely,” Lingo added. “It’s going to be a good fight because he likes standing there in the pocket. It could go either way.”

David Onama has proven to be a tough competitor inside the cage. In his recent contests, Onama has shown his durability as he survived heavy onslaughts from his opponents.

“I’ve never seen him get hit with some of the things that I can throw. I’m not too worried.”

This will be a high-stakes matchup for Lingo as he goes into the last fight on his current deal. A loss would likely eliminate him from the UFC roster whereas a definitive win can help get him a new contract.

“This is the last fight on my contract, so I’m all in,” Lingo said. “I know it’s going to be a banger either way. It’s going to be a good fight. I think the UFC is going to keep me just because I throw down and put on a show.”

Lingo talked about how he feels confident in his future with the promotion. The 27-year-old claims his fan-friendly style of striking will give him an advantage over someone who uses a wrestling-heavy approach to be the potentially better fighter.

“I like to stand and fight. That’s what the fans like to see.”

“I’m trying to get at least three fights a year man. I hate waiting a year to fight, it’s crazy. or six months even, seven months between fights. That sucks, the layoff.”

Do you think Austin Lingo will get the finish over David Onama?
