In the co-main event of last night’s (Sat. March 4, 2017) UFC 209 pay-per-view (PPV) event, two of the UFC’s most promising lightweight contenders went to war, when Lando Vannata and David Teymur fought inside the Octagon.

Vannata opened up the first round pushing the action. ‘Groovy’ landed a few nice kicks before subsequently blitzing Teymur and rocking him momentarily. Teymur responded with some hard shots of his own, knocking out Vannata’s mouthpiece at one point.

Both men would continue to exchange crazy shots, Teymur landing the hardest of them, before the round’s end.

The second round featured another barrage of high-level striking, with each man showing off their chin’s durability. Teymur again, however, landed the bigger and better shots, including a few nasty series of repetitive knees to Vannata’s body.

In the third and final round both men pushed the pace and were able to land their respective shots, however, Teymur landed three takedowns and continued his knee attack on Vannata’s body. The Swede ended the third round landing a nice series of shots to close out the bout.

Teymur took home the unanimous decision win after a great 25 minutes of lightweight action. You can check out the full fight video highlights here:

UFC 209 went down from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas tonight (Saturday, March 4, 2017). Though the card suffered a major blow when the co-main event between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson fell through at the last minute, the welterweight title rematch between the champ Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson remained intact. Unfortunately, it was a stinker.

Very little happened in rounds one, two, and four, but the challenger outlanded the champion and looked to be controlling the action. Woodley got a key takedown and landed some ground and pound in the third, and he crushed Thompson and flurried for a finish that wouldn’t come in the final 30 seconds. That was enough to swing the fight his way, as he escaped with his belt via majority decision. The lone dissenting judge had the fight a draw. Fortunately, it did not come to that.

The co-main event we ended up with was extremely exciting, however. Lightweight striking dynamos David Teymur and Lando Vannata put on a show of technical kickboxing. Vannata was much better known going in. His war with Tony Ferguson in his short-notice debut put him on the map, and he followed it up with the famous wheel kick knockout of John Makdessi. But it was Teymur who would emerge with the victory, as he was able to throw and land at a higher clip.

David Teymur Shuts Out Lando Vannata On Scorecards

Lando Vannata (9-2) was unable to find an answer for the pressure of David Teymur (6-1).

Vannata and Teymur weren’t supposed to be featured in the co-main event of UFC 209 tonight (March 4). That changed when Khabib Nurmagomedov fell ill and was forced out of his interim lightweight title bout with Tony Ferguson.

Vannata was loose and looked relaxed in the early stages of the fight. “Groovy” threw a jumping kick to the body. He went for a kick into a spinning backfist. Vannata caught a kick and threw a right hand. “Groovy” threw a hard cartwheel kick. Vannata dropped Teymur with a right hand. Teymur countered an uppercut with an overhand.

Teymur moved forward and landed a knee to the body. Time was briefly called after Vannata lost his  mouthpiece. Vannata landed a spinning back kick to the body. A hard kick to the body landed for Teymur. Vannata scored a takedown, but Teymur defended well and got back to his feet.

Teymur landed a shot, but Vannata ate it and moved forward. Vannata landed a kick to the body to end the opening round.

The second stanza was underway and Teymur had his high kick blocked. A hard right hand landed for Vannata. Teymur moved forward with strikes. Three knees to the body were there for Teymur. A right high kick was counter by a spin kick from “Groovy.” The two traded hard shots.

Blood trickled down the side of Teymur’s face. A hard superman punch landed from Teymur. He scored a takedown, but Vannata got up quickly. A left hand connected for Teymur. Some hard knees to the body landed for Teymur. The round ended shortly after.

The final round began and the two waste little time exchanging shot. A left knee to the body was there for Teymur. Vannata landed a side kick to the leg. A body kick found the target for Teymur. A high kick was blocked by Vannata. A low kick was there for “Groovy.”

Teymur completed a takedown, but Vannata got back up. Teymur scored his third takedown. Vannata stuffed Teymyur’s takedown attempt. A combination connected for Teymur and he scored his fourth takedown even though “Groovy” got up once again. A left hand was there for Teymur. The final horn sounded.

All three judges saw Teymur winning all three rounds.

Final Result: David Teymur def. Lando Vannata via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Where David Teymur comes largely from a more traditional muay thai striking background, Lando Vannata has cultivated a skillset that mixes boxing, karate, and muay thai into one unique package. A win from either prospect will get fans and pundits alike to open their eyes to the possibilities of these fighters one day reaching the top of the division.

The Swedish native David Teymur showcased his all around skills in his first two Octagon appearances. As far as his offensive game, Teymur operates out of the southpaw stance and usually prefers to open up his attacks with leg kicks. He throws jabs and left hands with near perfect technique and is adept at countering on the back foot. He also has a good sense of when to land reactive takedowns when his opponents push too far forward. In his bout against the unpredictable Lando, Teymur will want to utilize the one common factor we’ve seen from the ‘Groovy’ one in his first two octagon appearances. Lando has a tendency to use weaving head movement to dodge attacks. If Teymur is patient enough, he can time Lando as he dips his head and land one of those powerful uppercuts to floor his opponent.

As far as Lando Vannata attributes go, there’s no way you can’t love the slick footwork and head movement he’s brought with him to the cage. I hold Brandon Gibson in pretty high regard as a striking coach, somewhat of a blue print for some of my own coaching work. What I’ve seen ‘Six Gun’ infused into Lando’s style is the ability to move in and out of the danger zone while always having the ability to land a strike whether moving forward or backing up. As the orthodox fighter against a southpaw opponent, Lando will want to continue to utilize that low line sidekick to keep Teymur where he wants him. It’s a nice trick to either stop your opponents forward motion or to force them to move into the direction of a follow up strike. Lando also has some strong wrestling skills he can rely on as well as some well timed spinning techniques. He’ll want to stay on the move a bit more in this fight as he has a tendency to get flat footed and get caught with jabs. His weaving head movement should also be mixed in with slips and some good old fashioned footwork in order to get out of harms way. Rather than rely solely on head movement, foot movement is a great first line of defense.
