Deiveson Figueiredo predicts win over Sean O'Malley after UFC Austin win I'll finish him on the ground

Making a successful bantamweight division landing overnight on the main card of UFC Austin, former undisputed flyweight champion, Deiveson Figueiredo has claimed he would “finish” defending gold holder, Sean O’Malley if they ever fight – particularly if the fight ends up on the ground.

Figueiredo, a former two-time undisputed flyweight champion, made his long-anticipated bantamweight divisional bow at UFC Austin overnight, taking home a one-sided unanimous decision win over perennial contender, Rob Font.

Making his first Octagon walk at the 135 pound limit, Brazilian veteran, Figueiredo had been sidelined since he suffered a flyweight title fight loss to fellow former champion and four-time foe, Brandon Moreno courtesy of a doctor’s stoppage TKO back in January of this year.

Displaying his grappling chops as well as some notable and heavy counter striking, Figueiredo, 35, is likely to crack the bantamweight top 10 with his victory over New England Cartel staple, Font in ‘The Lone Star State’.

Deiveson Figueiredo plans finish over Sean O’Malley in title fight

However, immediately suggested as an opponent for former undisputed bantamweight champion, Petr Yan in the Russian’s impending return to competition, Figueiredo has claimed if he was offered the opportunity to take on Montana striker, O’Malley for gold, he would finish him on the ground.

“I feel ready to fight anyone for the championship,” Deiveson Figueiredo told assembled media through a translator after UFC Austin. “I’ve earned it. And if they [the UFC] want to put me – this is a division that has incredible people to fight against. Rob (Font) is an incredible fighter, and I was able to prove that. So, if they want to put me in a fight for the belt, for the championship, I’ll take it.”

“Sean O’Malley is an incredible fighter and an excellent striker but, you know, I’ve been training with Henry Cejudo, I believe in my team, I trust my team, I trust the strategy and the gameplan that they put on,” Deiveson Figueiredo continued. “And, you know, I’m a Jiu-Jitsu guy, I’m a grappler. I just don’t like to use it, I didn’t use it as much. But this is where I am. And I do feel that if I fight against Sean O’Malley, if we get to the ground, I will finish him.”

Two-time flyweight world champion Deiveson Figueiredo believes he has three more years of fighting before hanging up his gloves for good.

Figueiredo, 35, will return to the Octagon for the first time this December, 11 months after completing his epic quadrilogy with Brandon Moreno. ‘Deus da Guerra’ ultimately lost the series and the flyweight world title in their final meeting, but Figueiredo is ready to begin what will be the final chapter of his illustrious career in the incredibly competitive bantamweight division.

Appearing on MMA Fighting’s Portuguese-language podcast Trocação Franca, Figueiredo revealed that he plans on calling it a career after three more years of delivering fight fans the style of scraps they’ve come to know and love him for.

“I have three more years ahead of me before retiring,” Figueiredo said. “In the name of Jesus, I want to always, always, always put on great fights for the audience for as long as I’m in action, you can be sure of that.”

With more than a decade of his life dedicated to mixed martial arts and many years working on his family’s farm as a child, Deiveson Figueiredo knows he is nearing the end of the road and is looking forward to the day when he can kick back and enjoy the fruits of his labor.

“I want to live a bit of what I haven’t yet,” Figueiredo explained. “I’m a kid that have always worked since I got involved with MMA. I wasn’t born in a wealthy family, you know? I was born in Soure, Marajo, and was raised in a farm. My father was a cowherd and always worked in a farm, and one day he realized that he was hurting us, so he took us to the city to study. I’ve studied until I was 18 but always went back to the farm to help my father and take care of animals until I found out about MMA.

“Thank God I’ve achieved a lot through MMA. Look where I am now, in the United States. A kid that left Marajo, a simple town and the farm, and is in the United States now, fighting in the world’s biggest organization, giving my best to MMA fans and changing my family’s story through fighting. And thank God I can help support my family now.”

Deiveson Figueiredo Hopes to Share the Octagon with Dominick Cruz

But before he goes off into that good night, Figueiredo plans on adding another piece of UFC gold to his collection. On December 2, ‘Deus da Guerra’ will make his bantamweight debut against division standout Rob Font. With a win, Figueiredo will likely find himself thrust into the division’s top 10, making him an instant contender.

“I hope to one day get to the title fight in this division,” Figueiredo said. “That depends a lot on what I do against them.”

Before scoring a potential bantamweight title opportunity, Figueiredo would admittedly love the opportunity to share the Octagon with the promotion’s first-ever 135-pound champion, Dominick Cruz.

“That would be a great name for me to fight in my second fight in the division,” Figueiredo said. “It was going to be Dominick now but he’s injured. He’s a former champion and it would be a dream for me to fight a guy that once was a champion.”

Deiveson Figueiredo goes into his Fight Night headliner with Rob Font carrying a 10-3-1 record inside the Octagon. It will also be the first time ‘Deus da Guerra’ has fought someone not named Brandon Moreno in more than three years.

Former UFC champions will collide when Deiveson Figueiredo makes his bantamweight division debut against two-time former titleholder Dominick Cruz.

First reported by Igor Ribeiro, Figueiredo will make his official move to 135 in September for a clash with division staple Dominick Cruz. A specific date was not provided, but the likeliest scenario will pit the two fighters against one another on September 9 when the promotion heads back to Australia for UFC 293.

“Deiveson Figueiredo is very close to dating his debut in the French pesos,” Ribeiro said in a translated tweet. “The former flyweight champion negotiates to face Dominick Cruz, in September. Or verbal agreement is feito! ‘My employer is talking. It will be now for September,’” Figueiredo confirmed per the report.

Figueiredo and Cruz Will Both Be Looking to Get Back in the Win Column

Deiveson Figueiredo will make his way to the bantamweight division after etching his name in the history books at flyweight, capturing the 125-pound crown twice, and competing in the promotion’s first-ever quadrilogy against reigning flyweight champ Brandon Moreno. Boasting a 10-3-1 record inside the Octagon, 21-3-1 overall, ‘Deus Da Guerra’ will look to add another division’s gold to his already impressive collection.

But first, Figueiredo will need to pass a very tough test when he meets perhaps the most celebrated bantamweight in the history of MMA, Dominick Cruz. ‘The Dominator’ was long considered to be the best 135’er in the game, but a series of serious injuries plagued Cruz throughout his career and kept him out of the Octagon for long stretches of time. During his time away, Cruz has made his presence known at the commentary table, often working alongside Daniel Cormier and Jon Anik to offer his own unique take on the fight game during live broadcasts.

Cruz’s last appearance inside the Octagon came in August 2022 when he suffered a brutal fourth-round head kick KO against Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera. Prior to that, Cruz had back-to-back wins against Casey Kenny and Pedro Munhoz.
