Aljamain Sterling makes stunning fight offer to Demetrious Johnson ahead of UFC 292

Ahead of his return to the Octagon at UFC 292 this weekend in Boston, Massachusetts, Aljamain Sterling has made a wholly surprising offer to welcome current ONE Championship kingpin, Demetrious Johnson to the promotion again – if he’s seeking revenge for common-foe turning training partner, Henry Cejudo.

Sterling, the current undisputed bantamweight champion, is slated to headline UFC 292 this weekend at the TD Garden, taking on incoming title chaser, Sean O’Malley in a main event championship bout.

As for Johnson, the former UFC flyweight champion currently holds the ONE Championship flyweight title equivalent, managing to land a title trilogy rubber match win over Brazilian rival, Adriano Moraes back in May in a close decision victory.

And despite weighing up a potential retirement from combat sports competition, Kentucky native, Johnson, who recently booked a submission grappling outing – has maintained he is still unsure if he will continue with mixed martial arts competition.

However, according to Sterling, if the decorated flyweight kingpin – who has since trained alongside Cejudo following their double salvo of fights, wants to challenge him for bantamweight spoils, the door is firmly open.

“He’s (Demetrious Johnson) too little, man,” Aljamain Sterling told at a Q&A session ahead of UFC 292. “‘Mighty Mouse’ is great, but he’s too little. There’s a reason he why he lost to [Dominick Cruz], it wasn’t a skill deficiency, it’s size.”

“He’s skilled, but I think father time has passed him a little bit. If he wants this work, try to get some revenge for Henry (Cejudo), I can beat your boy, too,” Aljamain Sterling explained. “So, ‘Mighty Mouse’, where you at?”

Johnson, who still holds an Octagon record for consecutive successful title defenses with a whopping 11 straight championship knockbacks, ended his mind-boggling UFC tenure on the wrong side of a close decision rematch loss to common-foe, Cejudo back in 2018.

Demetrious Johnson still unsure on retirement from MMA I have to be passionate UFC

Now-three months removed from his most recent combat sports outing, former UFC flyweight champion and current ONE Championship flyweight gold holder, Demetrious Johnson still remains unsure regarding a potential return to mixed martial arts competition in the future – as well as a future retirement.

Johnson, a former undisputed flyweight champion under the banner of the UFC and the current ONE Championship flyweight gold holder at 135lbs, most recently turned in a unanimous decision win over Brazilian star, Adriano Moraes in the pair’s title trilogy rubber match back in May of this year in ONE Championship’s debut in the United States.

And following his decision win – which followed a stunning flying knee KO stoppage last year over Moraes – which was heralded as a surefire Knockout of the Year, Johnson admitted that he was yet to make a definite decision on his fighting future.

Demetrious Johnson admits he’s still undecided on a return to MMA

Three months later, Johnson, who has been linked with a matchup of some form against outspoken YouTuber and podcaster, Bradley Martyn over the weekend, admitted that he needed a driving force in order to keep in interested in competing in mixed martial arts.

“It’s undecided yet., that’s a fair assessment to make right now. It’s something that I have to be passionate about,” Demetrious Johnson said during an interview with MMA Junkie Radio. “I don’t want to do it just to do it. And for me, we just haven’t decided what’s next. Obviously, I’ve been busy with Jiu-Jitsu and that’s been driving me in training, but other than that, there’s nothing set in stone.”

Regarded as arguably the greatest mixed martial arts fighter of all-time, Johnson holds the record for most consecutive successful title defenses in UFC history with 11 straight title knockbacks during his tenure under the banner of the Dana White-led promotion.

Former UFC heavyweight, Brendan Schaub claims that Demetrious Johnson is down to fight YouTuber who claimed he could beat him in a ‘street fight’.

Podcast host and fitness YouTuber, Bradley Martyn recently grabbed the attention of the combat sports community. Several clips of his podcast have made the rounds in which he asks several fighters, including Nate Diaz, if they think they ‘could take him in a street fight.’

To his credit, Martyn is a very big man standing at least 6’2, weighs ‘260lbs’ and boasts some very impressive strength feats. This would probably be enough to fend off your average man, but of course not a professional fighter.

Like many uninitiated, Martyn has a brash confidence about him and assumes that because of his size he automatically possesses the upper hand.

During a recent podcast in which he was joined by fighter turned podcaster, Schaub, the subject was again brought up. Schaub used the example of former UFC flyweight champion and reigning flyweight champion, Johnson.

Schaub explained that Johnson, who probably walks around the 150lb mark while standing at 5’3 would still easily beat Martyn, and could hurt him very badly while doing so. Martyn arrogantly disagree with the idea.

In a follow up podcast, Schaub said he had spoken to Johsnon and that the 36-year-old was down to square of with Martyn.

I think the clip of us on twitter is over eight million views now of me saying that mighty mouse can beat you up,” said Schaub. Now little up on that, i spoke to mighty mouse yesterday because he reposted the clip.

“So I told mighty mouse, ‘good dude’” Schaub said in reference to Martyn. “He’s [Johnson] like ‘yeah no doubt, but tell him I’m down- it’s not going to go well.’

“He [Johnson] said ‘I’m going on vacation, so lets figure it out and ill come to LA – let me know’.”

Reigning One flyweight champion and former UFC champion, Demetrious Johnson discusses henry Cejudo’s recent unsuccessful title bid.

UFC bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling earned arguably the biggest win of his career when he fended off former two-division ruler, Cejudo. However, the bout was a close one and the two combatants shared success throughout the 25-minute contest. While the decision was no robbery, some did feel that Cejudo should have gotten the nod, one of which was his former foe turned training partner, Johnson.

Demetrious Johnson weighs in on Henry Cejudo’s performance.

Talking on The MMA Hour, Johnson discussed the recent title fight, and while he still scored the fight for Cejudo after a rewatch also feels that at some points he ‘dropped the ball’.

“I do [still think Cejudo won],” Johnson said. “I can see how they gave it to Aljo. I haven’t talked to Henry about it yet. I don’t want to give away the things I think.

“I thought [Cejudo won] 3-2, but looking back, going into final round, I had it tied, two for Henry, two for Aljo, and I felt like Henry did enough. That’s the thing though, I’m judging it off my feelings, ONE Championship [rules], because there were times where — I’ll say this, Aljo does a great job, he did an amazing job. I didn’t account for his wrestling, for Aljo to get him down like that. I know Aljo is a better grappler than Henry, because he got his back, tried to get the hooks in, right?” (H/T MMAFighting)

Talking more specifically, Johnson believed that Cejudo didn’t take advantage of Sterling staying grounded after attempting takedowns.

“The thing that Aljo did good, he would shoot, Henry would defend it, then Aljo would stay there,” Johnson said.

“For me, I have nothing but love for Aljo, nothing but respect. He does a good job of utilizing that — he shoots, Henry stuffs it, he stays down there. He never got punished for that. That’s where Henry kind of dropped the ball. He should have either circled behind him or [stuffed him down], shuck him by, and whatnot. That’s my opinion.”

Demetrious Johnson discuss retirement with UFC stars Georges St-Pierre and Khabib Nurmagomedov

Off the back of his ONE Fight Night 10 victory over three-time foe, Adriano Moraes, heralded flyweight champion, Demetrious Johnson has claimed he will consult both fellow former UFC champions, Georges St-Pierre and Khabib Nurmagomedov on their decisions to retire from mixed martial arts competition.

Johnson, a former undisputed flyweight champion under the banner of the UFC, managed to retain his ONE Championship crown in Broomfield, Colorado last weekend against three-time opponent, Moraes, successfully taking bragging rights in the pair’s trilogy title rubber match.

However, prior to the event, Kentucky maestro, Johnson flirted with a potential immediate retirement from mixed martial arts regardless of result against the Brazilian, however, has yet to pull the trigger on his decision.

Demetrious Johnson still weighs up potential MMA retirement

Providing an update on his fighting future, Johnson, who holds the record for most successful consecutive title defenses under the UFC banner with 11 straight wins as champions, claimed he would question both St-Pierre, and Nurmagomedov on their decisions to call time on their respective careers.

“Taking to my peers, talking to Urijah Faber – I’m going to reach out to [Georges St-Pierre], I’m going to reach out to Khabib Nurmagomedov,” Demetrious Johnson told assembled media following ONE Fight Night 10. “I’m going to talk to these guys. I’m like, ‘Why did you guys stop?’”

“Those guys could have kept on fighting, and there comes a point in time – I’m 36-years-old, and do I just keep on doing this and giving other athletes the opportunity to beat me and add to their legacy?” Demetrious Johnson asked. “There’s a lot of stuff I’ve got muster up.”

5-1 since his transition to ONE Championship, Johnson, a prior Grand Prix victor, landed a stunning highlight-reel knee KO over Moraes last year before securing a decision win in their weekend title trilogy matchup.
