Following his submission victory over Lyman Good at UFC Fortaleza, Demian Maia issued out an interesting callout.

The Brazilian said he’d like to step into the Octagon against fellow grappler Michael Chiesa next. It certainly sounds like an interesting match-up on paper, as both men are phenomenal grapplers. Maia said the match-up came to mind after several fans bombarded his social media page after seeing Chiesa’s submission victory over Carlos Condit in December.

However, Chiesa doesn’t think that fight is a possability. Speaking to Submission Radio recently, Chiesa responded to Maia’s call out. He said that he doesn’t think the bout will match-up with his desired schedule. Maia mentinoed wanting to return to the Octagon in May to fight in front of his native crowd in Curitiba, Brazil. Those plans don’t work for “Maverick”:

“That’s cool, it’s flattering coming from Demian, I just don’t think I fit in his timeline,” Chiesa said. “I don’t see May in Curitiba fitting into my schedule.

“We already got an opponent in mind, I can’t really say too much, but I think UFC is really looking to go a different direction with me and this certain guy. Thank you, Demian, I’m a big fan of the guy, but I just don’t see it in the foreseeable future.”

Chiesa made a successful welterweight debut at UFC 232 in December. He locked in a kimura on former interim 170-pound champion Carlos Condit for the victory. Now back in the win column after making the jump to 170 pounds, Chiesa’s career will certainly be interesting to watch progress after leaving the talent-stacked lightweight division.

Former middleweight and welterweight title challenger Demian Maia isn’t wasting any time calling his shot after his first-round submission over Lyman Good last weekend.

Maia needed only 2:38 to submit Good with a standing rear naked choke on Saturday night. He perhaps saved his UFC career with a much-needed win. The win snapped a three-fight skid for the Brazilian.

Almost immediately, he had another name on his mind at the post-fight press conference.

”There’s an athlete that people have talked a lot that they would like to watch me fighting him, Michael Chiesa,” Maia said, “so let’s see what my manager Eduardo Alonso will talk to the UFC. Maybe we’re going back to Curitiba one more time. I fought there with Matt Brown, 45,000 people in May 2016.”

”After he won against (Carlos) Condit a lot of people (went) to my Twitter page and start to talk about him fighting me and I get interested to see,” Maia said.

Maia knows that his win over Good cannot be overstated. He is also aware that with only two fights left on his current deal, a title shot isn’t in sight.

”A win like tonight’s is very important, but I see my career as a three-fight path and this was the first one,” said Maia, who has two bouts left in his current deal with the promotion. “If I win the next one, it’s another piece in the right way, and then winning the third one and continuing to evolve and feeling well, sure.

”As long as I’m feeling like that and having pleasure in going to the gym to train, I plan on fighting more, but we’ll see.”

UFC Veteran offers his prediction for the next big showdown involving the UFC welterweight title. UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is slated to make his next title defense against Kamaru Usman in the co-headliner of the UFC 235 pay-per-view event.

Many people believed that Usman should’ve been in the running for a title shot after his latest win. This includes UFC President Dana White, so this fight was booked.

Former title contender Demian Maia gave his take on this upcoming title fight during a recent interview with MMAJunkie. This is where he made it known that he thinks Woodley retains the strap but Usman will be champion in the near future.

“It’s an extremely tough fight to call,” Maia said. “To be coherent with what I’ve said, I believe that Woodley, for all that he’s shown, is a slight favorite. But I have a feeling, I don’t know why – I mean, I do know why, because I fought him. (Usman) is a very well-rounded guy. Aggressive at the right times, but he also knows how to apply the rules. I think Usman will still be champion. I don’t know if it’s now, or within one year, I believe he will be champion some day.”

“Maybe if I talk with them I will know better, but I don’t know what’s going on,” Maia said. “And also Tyron, he wants to fight at some specific times. He always tries to push the best time for him and the other opponents get annoyed. They want to sometimes give a short camp to the guy and Colby didn’t accept. I don’t know how the negotiation was. So it’s hard to say. And it’s a game. Tyron is doing his game and they’re doing their game and we don’t know what is happening behind the scenes.”

The UFC 235 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, March 2, 2019 in at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET. The preliminary card will air on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET and the UFC’s streaming service, Fight Pass.
