Derek Brunson is eyeing fights with some of the big names at middleweight after taking out rising star Edmen Shahbazyan in the main event at UFC Vegas 5 this past weekend.

Brunson entered the Octagon a huge underdog against the surging contender who many expected would continue his rise to the top of the 185lb division. The 36-year-old used his superior wrestling and nasty ground and pound to dominate his opponent over two rounds. Shahbazyan looked done but was allowed to fight on in round three only to be quickly stopped once the final stanza began.

It appears Brunson has already lined up his next two potential victims. The American says he wants to face either Jack Hermansson or Darren Till next.

“Hermanson or Til next sounds good to me. Both ranked ahead of me & no fight scheduled! @UFC @AliAbdelaziz00 @danawhite @Mickmaynard2,” Brunson wrote on social media.

Hermansson is riding high after one of the biggest wins of career. The European standout quickly tapped Kelvin Gastelum at UFC Fight Island 2 to establish himself as one of the best in the division after previously suffering defeat to fellow contender Jared Cannonier.

Till on the other hand is coming off a defeat to former middleweight king Robert Whittaker at UFC Fight Island 3. The Englishman was impressive during his close decision loss to Whittaker but is unlikely to fight any time soon after suffering a nasty knee injury during the fight.

Who do you think Derek Brunson should face next?

Dana White

Dana White was not happy with the work of the cageside doctor during the UFC on ESPN+ 31 main event. Brunson enjoyed a dominant round two which ended with him on top reigning down blows which seemed to have momentarily put his young opponent out cold just before the horn sounded to end the round.

Veteran referee Herb Dean called the doctor in to check on Shahbazyan. After chatting with the fighter the doctor let the fight continue and Shahbazyan was quickly stopped at the beginning of round three.

Speaking to media post-fight at UFC Vegas 5 White expressed his belief Shahabazyan went out at the end of round two and questioned the work of what he believes is an inexperience ringside doctor, he said.

“Shahbazyan looked like he was out at the end of that round. I think that the doctor could have stopped … first of all, the doctor’s obviously inexperienced. I don’t know anything about the doctor, but I’ve never seen him before.”

“You’ve got Brunson, who ends that round strong, many could argue that fight could have been stopped there at the end of the round. I’m sure the ref thought that the guy would have time to go back,” White said. “What you don’t do is talk to the guy for (expletive) 10 minutes while he’s hurt. You know what I mean? Either stop the fight or let him continue, but go.”

“You’re letting the kid recover while you’ve got Brunson who did that work while he’s waiting for the bell to ring so that he can go in and finish the fight. Pull the trigger one way or the other. Stop the fight or don’t.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Do you agree with Dana White? Did the ringside doctor perform poorly during the UFC Vegas 5 main event?

Edmen Shahbazyan is taking his defeat to Derek Brunson well.

Shahbazyan met Brunson in his first main event in their middleweight headliner at UFC Vegas 5 on Saturday night.

However, it wasn’t a memorable one as he was battered by Brunson in the second round and may have even been momentarily knocked out at the end of the round as Brunson was landing ground and pound.

Regardless, the fight entered the third round only to last a few seconds as Brunson eventually earned the TKO win over the 22-year-old.

Shahbazyan Has No Excuses

For Shahbazyan, it was his first professional defeat and despite getting bloodied and bruised, he was in good spirits as he released a statement after the fight.

“I’m ok everyone just need some stitches. Thank you for all your messages, love you all! Congrats to @derekbrunson tonight he did a great job. No excuses, it’s the fight game and I’ll be back! Blessed to have the support I have from everyone!”

Despite the setback, Shahbazyan still has a bright future. After all, he is in the top 10 of the middleweight division and already holds wins over top-level fighters at the age of 22.

The future can only get brighter from hereon out.
