UFC middleweight, Deron Winn has been handed his release from the organization this Thursday night according to reports – a week removed from a fall and subsequent injury suffered at the promotion’s Performance Institute which forced him from a UFC Vegas 66 fight with Julian Marquez.

Winn, who boasts a 7-3 professional record, last featured at UFC Fight Night Austin back in June, suffering a one-sided second round TKO loss to Phil Hawes.

Expected to make his Octagon return at last Saturday’s UFC Vegas 66 event, which marked the end of scheduled for 2022 for the Dana White-led organization, Winn suffered a fall on a stairs at the Performance Institute in Las Vegas, Nevada – suffering a minor concussion.

And as per an initial report from MMA Fighting reporter, Damon Martin, Missouri native, Winn has now been handed his release from the UFC.

“Deron Winn has been released from the UFC, per officials,” Martin tweeted. “Winn was originally supposed to compete at UFC Vegas 66 but dropped off the card after he fainted and fell down some stairs at the UFC PI.”

Addressing his own release from the organization on his official Twitter account, amateur wrestling talent, Winn expressed his disappointment at learning of his departure during Christmas week.

Deron Winn has voiced his displeasure at the timing of his UFC release

“Being released after a freak accident on their (the UFC) property the week before Christmas,” Deron Winn tweeted. “Man, “it’s business not personal” has never been more real (face palm emoji).”

Landing victories over both Antonio Arroyo, and Eric Spicely during his Octagon tenure in between back-to-back defeats against Darren Stewart, and Gerald Meerschaert, Winn tested positive for amphetamines following his 2020 loss to latter, while missing weight by eight and a half pounds for his fight with Stewart.

Winn has previously competed under the banners of the LFA, and Bellator MMA, and featured against UFC alum, Tom Lawler in a winning performance at Golden Boy Promotions: Liddell vs. Ortiz 3 back in 2018.

UFC middleweight Deron Winn gives a humorous breakdown of his recent knockout loss to Phil Hawes.

Following a loss, we often see fighters release solemn statements apologizing for their performance, blaming weight cuts, or describing how bad their camp was, not Deron Winn.

This past Saturday saw him face Phil Hawes, a bout that was almost a year in the making, with it first being booked in July of last year.

Unfortunately for Winn, Hawes was on fire and produced an incredible performance, stopping Winn in the second round, and earning himself a performance of the night bonus.

Winn would suffer a broken orbital bone and was badly beaten when the fight was eventually stopped but just days after took the time to voice over the highlights to his latest bout.

Winn can be heard stating: “Now the doc came to see me before the next round. Boy, get your a** out the cage, we fighting. I heard some drunk dudes in the stands cheering me on so I figured ‘I’ll get up.’ I get up, I’m digging in my ear, I don’t even know what’s going on.
We back to fighting, try to make it dirty. We throw elbows, I’m throwing elbows, He elbows me for the three millionth time. I’m grabbing my head, tired of getting elbowed. I’m like ‘Stop! Elbowing! Me! He elbows me for the fourth millionth time, I’m looking at Herb [Referee] like boy what took your a** so long.”

What’s Next For Deron Winn?

The loss now leaves the former collegiate wrestler with a record of 7-3 and with such a severe injury like a broken orbital bone, we may not see Winn back in action for a while.

But, if Winn continues to show the heart that he did while also engaging the fans with content like this, the American Kickboxing Academy product will have many waiting on his return.

Cooler heads have seemed to prevail after UFC middleweight Phil Hawes’ post-UFC Austin dust-up with Daniel Cormier.

Hawes defeated one of Cormier’s protégés, Deron Winn, during the UFC Austin prelims this weekend. It was arguably the best performance of Hawes’ career as he pressured Winn on the feet and eventually forced a stop to the action in Round 2.

But Hawes’ gratification of victory quickly turned hostile as he got into it with Cormier just minutes after the fight’s conclusion. Hawes appeared to take issue with Cormier allegedly picking Winn’s opponents, which the commentator and former UFC double champion vehemently denied.

During his UFC Austin post-fight press conference, Hawes expressed regret for getting into it with Cormier.

“It’s just a misunderstanding on my behalf, you know, ’cause ‘DC’ is such a role model to me. You know what I mean? Two-weight world champion and just a freaking stellar dude,” Hawes said. “So there was a little miscommunication, wrong place, wrong time. I apologize, ‘DC’. Don’t beat me up.” (h/t SportsKeeda)

Hawes and Cormier went ahead with their post-fight Octagon interview and tensions seemed to subside quickly.

Hawes rebounded after a first-round knockout loss to Chris Curtis last November at UFC 268. Before that, he won seven straight fights over the likes of Kyle Daukaus and Nassourdine Imavov.

Hawes and Cormier seemed to cool off following the heated exchange, but MMA fans can expect Cormier to potentially address the confrontation on his DC&RC show this week.

What was your reaction to the post-fight altercation between Phil Hawes and Daniel Cormier?

Phil Hawes, Daniel Cormier Involved In UFC Austin Verbal Spat: ‘You Picked The Wrong Pony’

Turning a spectacular, one-sided second round standing knockout win over Deron Winn at UFC Austin, middleweight strikes, Phil Hawes then landed himself in a back-and-forth verbal exchange with former two-weight UFC champion and color commentator in the Octagon — with Hawes claiming Cormier had shown bias toward Winn ahead of the matchup.

Phil Hawes, who featured on both The Ultimate Fighter 23 as well as Dana White‘s Contender Series has managed to establish a 5-1 promotional record, stopping the aforenoted, Winn tonight in hugely-dominant fashion, forcing a standing TKO victory in the second round after a slew of knockdowns and a series of slashing elbow strikes.

However, after the victory, Hawes, who was preparing for the official result to be read out and his post-fight interview with Cormier, switched his attention to the former undisputed light heavyweight and heavyweight champion.

Setting himself in the center of the Octagon, the New Jersey native claimed Cormier “picked the wrong pony”, to which Cormier insisted that he did not “pick fights”.

With referee, Herb Dean stepping between the two as tension began to rise, Cormier claimed that Winn was discouraged from taking a fight with Hawes in the past, and insisted that the result that had just played out was why.

Urging Hawes to act more respectfully following his victory, the New Jersey striker apologized to Cormier — who echoed that he did not “pick fights”, after Hawes alluded to a potential bias in the favor of Winn.

Phil Hawes improves to 4-1 during his UFC tenure

12-3 as a professional, Hawes has now landed UFC victories over Jacob Malkoun, Nassourdine Imavov, Kyle Daukaus, and now Winn, with his sole promotional defeat coming in the form of a knockout loss to Chris Curtis at UFC 268 back in November at Madison Square Garden.

We all heard of four UFC fighters failing drug tests this past June. We were given their names, Jamahal Hill, Luis Pena, Tim Elliott, and Deron Winn, but their suspensions had yet to be determined. ESPN broke the news earlier today.

Marc Andre-Barriault was also flagged, but was not sentenced due to cooperating with USADA to prove it to be a tainted supplement. Hill, Pena, and Elliott all tested positive for marijuana, while Winn tested positive for amphetamines.

Hill’s first-round TKO victory over Klidson Abreu was overturned to a no contest, he was suspended six months, and fined 15% of his purse.

Both Elliott and Pena were suspended four-and-a-half months and suspended 15% of their purse. They each lost their respective fights, Elliott lost to Brandon Royval via submission (arm-triangle choke), Pena lost to Khama Worthy via submission (guillotine choke), so neither of their records change.

Lastly, Winn was suspended for nine months and fined $1,800 for his drug test failure at UFC 248. Winn lost to Gerald Meerschaert via submission (rear naked choke), so his record remains the same as well.

The most surprising name on this list has got to be Deron Winn, and because of what he tested positive for. It’s hard to imagine him doing something like that, he’s a lifelong athlete, he trains at AKA, it’s a wonder.

Winn did miss weight for his fight prior, and amphetamines certainly do aid in weight loss. Or maybe he just had a little cold and took some cough medicine, which will make you pop for that.

The dates of the tests is the starting date of their sentence. So basically, whenever their fight was, add their sentence to that and that’s how long they can’t fight for. Elliott and Hill both fought on May 30, Pena fought on June 27, and Winn fought on March 7.

It’s unfortunate seeing someones victory taken away just because of marijuana, but it’s great to see at least none of these names popped for a tainted supplement. That’s been a huge problem for a lot of fighters recently.
