Dominick Cruz is setting the record straight about recent reports that he called out “Suga” Sean O’Malley following UFC 260. In the immediate aftermath of Sean O’Malley’s impressive victory over Thomas Almeida at UFC 260 that ended with a literal airball jumper, it was reported that Dominick Cruz had called next. Hot off the heels of a clinic of a victory over Thomas Almeida at UFC 260, Sean O’Malley already has his sights set on a new matchup.
Even as the dust was settling following the third round TKO, former bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz was already texting Chael Sonnen about how he’d like to face ‘Suga’ Sean next. Cruz is coming off a decision win over another rising prospect in Casey Kenny.
On the Pat McAfee Show, O’Malley was asked who he’d be interested in fighting next. The ever vocal American stated the following:
“The second after you fight the question is, who’s next? I heard Dominick Cruz texted Chael Sonnen saying he wanted that fight. So, I don’t know if Chael got a prank text for a fake Dom or if that’s real. That’s a potential matchup.“
“I know Dustin Poirier tweeted the other day, July 10, so I think I’m a pretty good co-main event type dude,” O’Malley continued. “Dustin vs. Conor, Suga vs. Dominick, I don’t know, that makes sense, that might be it. July, we’ll see. I definitely want to get in there a couple more times this year” (Transcribed via BJPenn.com).
The fight would seem to be mutually beneficial for both fighters. O’Malley would get the opportunity to test himself against a true veteran of the 135lb division. Whilst Cruz would be able to catapult himself back into the limelight with a win against such an exciting prospect.
The placement of the fight would also seem to make perfect sense. McGregor PPV cards do not typically feature co-main title fights, so Conor does not have to split the PPV buys. However, a fight like O’Malley vs Cruz would no doubt only serve to bolster the hype of the card, without impacting McGregor’s payout.

UFC 260 would be no different, as Cruz had an immediate call out after the fights. During the ESPN post show, Chael Sonnen shared that he’d received a text, while on air, from Cruz stating that he believes he should fight Sean O’Malley next.
It comes as no surprise that O’Malley would garner the attention from a fighter of Cruz’s caliber. The legend has consistently challenged himself and is not one to shy away from the tough fights. Over the span of his sixteen year career, Cruz has taken on all challengers and has never lost a professional, non-title fight. Following up his split-decision win over Contender Series alum and O’Malley teammate, Casey Kenney, Cruz seems to be back in the business of trying to run through opposing gyms. He’s also hungry to prove that he deserves another run at the title.
For his part, O’Malley scored a decisive victory over Thomas Almeida at UFC 260, silencing the critics after his lost against Marlon Vera. The seven-month layoff had no impact on his performance and he looked as dominant as he had during his undefeated run. Sonnen believes that this match up is the right move for both fighters. “What’s up Dominick? Hope you’re well, buddy. But get onto the UFC. Speak to Mick Maynard and Sean Shelby because we don’t know if Sean O’Malley wants that fight. That is a fight that needs to happen. That’s a tremendous match up for Sean O’Malley because it would raise his profile. And for Dominick Cruz, that’s beating a contender, that gets him back to a title shot.”

UFC Bantamweight legend Dominick Cruz had quite a post fight callout after his big Split Decision win over up and coming Casey Kenney this past weekend at UFC 259. Cruz called for a charity fight with Hans Molenkamp, a business development rep with Cruz’s longtime sponsor and a huge UFC sponsor in Monster Energy. Cruz was interviewed by James Lynch this week and had a few things to say regarding the callout:
“The company has reached out to me and they were very open-minded with me at the top,” Cruz told James Lynch. “…They reached out and they were very open-minded and they were hearing my side. I couldn’t really do that before. If you think about it, I’ve been with Monster seven-plus years and because of the person that I spoke about, if I was to talk to that person the way I did yesterday, I would have gotten a flood of text, a flood of calls like ‘What are you doing? Why are you talking to the bosses? You can’t be doing that, man, because then they start asking me questions.’ Like, why can’t I do that? So it was nice to get that call and it was nice to have that talk without hearing from that person.”
Monster Energy did end up reaching out to the future hall of famer, and so did the man he called out, Hans Molenkamp.
“That person has reached out to me but all he did was take a screenshot of our text message conversation before I did the post-fight interview,” Cruz said. “There was no words. It was just a screenshot of our conversation. So it was very passive aggressive, very his way of doing things. No communication just what does that even mean? He always pretends to be my friend to my face and then does shady things.”
While Molenkamp has yet to publicly address this situation, the former Bantamweight champ did say that this made more noise than he initially had anticipated, “I didn’t expect it to blow up like this. I just wanted to get – to me it’s a win-win. He’s gonna have a problem with me so let him get it out on me if he wants and charity wins. Like, legitimately. I fight people for a living. This isn’t new to me. When I fight somebody, I’m not mad at Casey Kenney I don’t hate him. We’re fighting, this is what it is. He brags a lot about being that so he’s in the same boat now. Let’s give you the opportunity.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)
While it seems pretty unlikely that this charity fight will ever take place, MMA is a world where “never say never” can be the truest of statements. Cruz meanwhile, has inserted himself back into the top 10 of one of the best divisions in the sport, and should be in line for another high profile fight against a top contender later this year.

Monster Energy has responded to the claims made against Hans Molenkamp by Dominick Cruz.
Following his victory over Casey Kenney at UFC 259, Cruz used his post-fight interview to call for a charity fight against Molenkamp. According to Cruz, Molenkamp – a business development rep with the energy drink company – has used his position for personal gains. The former bantamweight champion alleges that Molenkamp has tied sponsorship payouts to his personal social media posts and interviews. He says there are others in the UFC who have similar complaints, including president Dana White.
“Look at my face, look at my body, I get beat to death for a living,” Cruz said. “So when you try to force me and you text me if I don’t comment on your page, if I don’t give you an interview, that you’re going to take what pays my bills? What are we doing? Monster sponsors me, not you.”
“We take any such allegations seriously and are looking into it at this time,” a Monster spokesperson wrote to MMA Fighting. No further details were offered.
Molenkamp is a longtime MMA practitioner and supporter who has served as a link between Monster and the UFC for over a decade. White confirmed that he and several other fighters on his roster have had issues with Molenkamp, but ultimately it was up to Monster whether they take action or not. He also said that as a whole, the Monster partnership has been good for the company and fighters alike.
“Is Hans a goofy dude? Yeah, he’s a very goofy dude,” White said. “But they’re a sponsor. These guys are a sponsor, they’re great sponsors, [and] they pay these guys a lot of money… It’s a privilege to get money from a sponsor. So if you don’t like the way they do business, don’t do business with them.”
According to reports, a phone number that has been used by Molenkamp in the past had been disconnected as of Monday. Molenkamp has not responded to the allegations on social media. His most recent posts are dedicated to a GoFundMe page collecting money to cover his late MMA coach’s funeral costs. Most of the comments on the posts have been about the Cruz callout.
