Former bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz has explained why his rumoured fight with rising star Cory Sandhagen didn’t come off.

The 35-year-old hasn’t fought since losing his title to Cody Garbrandt at UFC 207 in 2016 due to persistent injury problems. Now those issues appear to be behind him and he has been looking to return to the octagon for quite some time.

Earlier this month a fight between Cruz and Sandhagen appeared to be done as the latter took to Instagram to announce he had accepted a bout with the former 135lb king, before later telling fans Cruz turned down the fight.

Speaking to MMA Fighting the bantamweight great wanted to clear that issue up, he said. “So Sean Shelby is the matchmaker, me and Cory Sandhagen don’t talk, who is Cory Sandhagen getting his information from? He’s getting it from the matchmaker. Where else would he get it? He’s the only guy talking to both of us, isn’t he?

“What Shelby does is he creates fights between the fighters before the fight happens so that he can get himself out of the way,” Cruz continued. “That’s my experience. It’s not a fact. And what I’m getting from this is Shelby’s telling Sandhagen about me, then Cory Sandhagen puts it out there and then expects me to bite.”

Cruz expressed his desire to the matchmaker to fight once then get an immediate shot at the title. In order to do enough to earn a title shot Cruz was told he’d have to get by Petr Yan.

“I was thinking, I want a title shot. I don’t want to just fight somebody, I want to fight towards the title. So I would fight anybody, let me get the title shot after that fight.

“[Sean Shelby said] ‘Petr Yan’s the guy.’ I said yes, I’ll fight Petr Yan. He said I can’t fight Petr Yan because he’s fighting Marlon Moraes. Well then I’ll fight Moraes, or Petr Yan, because those are direct fights straight to the title. After I beat either of those guys, I get a title shot. That’s what I’m in this for, not to fight 13 times beforehand.

“Sean Shelby’s saying all of this stuff to different fighters and not telling me about it,” Cruz continued. “You offered me Petr Yan to get to the title, and then you switched it up. That’s the truth.

“I never said no to Sandhagen. I never would. I don’t say no to fights. What I said no to was not fighting Petr Yan. I want to fight Petr Yan, I want to fight Marlon Moraes, I want to fight for the title after I fight one of those guys. If you need me to get one fight back before I fight for the title, give me that guy you need me to fight to get to that title.”

Henry Cejudo, Dominick Cruz

Bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo says he wants to fight Dominick Cruz if his bout with Jose Aldo is impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent travel bans.

At the moment, Cejudo is set to face former featherweight champion Aldo in the UFC 250 main event. The fight is due to take place on May 9 at Ginásio do Ibirapuera in São Paulo, Brazil. A travel ban in Brazil is due to come into place very soon. The UFC has already asked Jessica Andrade to travel to Las Vegas in order to make her fight with Rose Namajunas at UFC 249.

‘Triple C’ thinks UFC 250 may be relocated to the United States sooner rather than later. If it is, he wants to have a back-up opponent in case Aldo struggles to get into the country. Hence his call-out of Cruz who has been looking for a comeback fight for some time now.

The bantamweight great hasn’t fought since losing his title to Cody Garbrandt in December 2016, his career marred by persistent injuries. He was briefly believed to be fighting rising star Cory Sandhagen at UFC San Diego however that fight fell through pretty quickly.

Speaking on Twitter Cejudo expressed his worries about getting Aldo into the country ahead of UFC 250 and called on Cruz to act as back-up, he said.

“Since #UFC249 is in jeopardy because we can’t get Khabib out of Russia. So Just in case we can’t get Jose Baldo into America soil, make sure to bring your untailored tuxedo that you wear every Saturday long with yours balls! Because you’re on deck sweetheart. @DominickCruz”

Cejudo hasn’t fought since winning the vacant 135lb belt in June 2019. The former flyweight champion captured the title by stopping Marlon Moraes inside three rounds at UFC 238.

The 27-year-old Sandhagen is currently unbeaten inside the UFC and has won seven straight fights, five of which have come under the UFC banner. In his past two fights ‘The Sandman’ has seriously stepped up his level of competition and looked great whilst doing it. He beat John Linekar and Raphael Assuncao to rise to #4 in the bantamweight rankings.

Sandhagen who hasn’t competed since August 2019 was expected to face Frankie Edgar earlier this year. However, the former lightweight champion decided to take a late notice fight with ‘Korean Zombie’ at UFC Busan instead.

ready to get back to fight and do what he does best.

Neither the UFC or Cruz have commented on Sandhagen’s
social media post. It seems like the young star is trying to put some public
pressure on his potential opponent to get this fight over the line.

Everyone is looking at Henry Cejudo vs. Jose Aldo as the next likely matchup for the UFC’s 135-pound title.

However, perhaps Cejudo could test himself against, arguably, the best the division has ever seen in Dominick Cruz? Recently, “The Dominator” was interviewed by ex-UFC heavyweight-turned-comedian Brendan Schaub on his “Food Truck Diaries” series. During the interview, Cruz mentioned his desire to fight Cejudo, and explained that, if “Triple C” wants to be considered the GOAT, he has to beat him first. (H/T MMA Junkie)

“Well, I’m kind of in a Diaz situation, Nate Diaz situation, where I’m like, ‘You got Henry Cejudo calling me out, why would I want to fight anybody else?” Cruz asked. “He’s the title holder, he’s got an Olympic title and thinks he’s a ’25-pound and ’35-pound champion. That’s the guy to beat, and he wants to say that he’s the GOAT; you’ve got to beat me, bro.

“It’s plain, simple, period. It’s just like, let’s do this. I’m right here, I’m finally healthy. We’re both coming off shoulder surgery, we’re both from Arizona, we were both on the same national wrestling team. I know his style. I know everything about him, I know his background. I know how he grew up.”

Cejudo has been vamping up a potential matchup with former 145-pound kingpin Jose Aldo, who recently dropped down to bantamweight, ultimately losing his divisional debut to Marlon Moraes via controversial decision. While many believe Aldo truthfully won the fight, including UFC president Dana White, it sounds like Aldo could be next in line to challenge for the title.

Cruz believes that Cejudo is pushing hard for a fight with “Scarface” because he knows deep down a matchup between them likely wouldn’t go his way.

“Realistically, fighting me makes you the best in the division if you can beat me, but I think you know the truth; that’s why you’re going towards an Aldo that lost to Moraes, who you beat,” Cruz said.

“That gives some comfort, where you got me you could face, after a three-year layoff, where I’ve looked very good before in the past, and I fight a little unconventionally, but the way I see it is we’re both coming off shoulder surgery and so that makes this an even fight to have.”

The former 135-pound champ has dealt with injuries over the past several years that have plagued his career. Most recently, Cruz underwent shoulder surgery and is gearing up to make his return to action in 2020. Should all remain well, Cruz is looking to fight sometime in the next six months.

“Within the next six months,” Cruz said. “I’m healthy. This year, I will fight as long as everything stays in line like it has, and I learned that a lot of what was stopping me has just been keeping focused on the now and not worrying about things you can’t control.”
