With a number of record-setting events and growth, 2016 was definitely a year to be remembered in the history of mixed martial arts (MMA).

The sport blasted into the mainstream like it never has before thanks in large to the never-ending media coverage granted to dual weight champion Conor McGregor, whose rivalry with Nate Diaz will most certainly go down as one of the most storied ever. And of course “The Notorious” followed up his rebound win over Diaz with a lightweight title-winning knockout of Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205, so it’s tough to pick anyone but the popular Irishman; yet he also lost a fight and 2016 also featured so much more from the other fighters on the roster.

For example, Dominick Cruz came back from the worst streak of injuries the UFC has ever seen to win back his bantamweight title from T.J. Dillashaw before defending it against Dillashaw’s onetime friend and mentor Urijah Faber at UFC 199. Also at that event, Michael Bisping shocked the world with his first-round knockout of Luke Rockhold to win the middleweight title. Add that to “The Count’s” close wins over Anderson Silva and Dan Henderson, and the brash Brit is certainly a top contender.

Pound-for-pound ruler Demetrious Johnson also extended his streak of title defenses at 125 pounds by two. Welterweight champ Tyron Woodley stormed back with a first-round knockout of Robbie Lawler in July only to retain his title in a thrilling bout with Stephen Thompson at UFC 205. As for “Wonderboy,” he’s a contender for the award with three huge bouts against three champions throughout the year.

Amanda Nunes surprised everyone by destroying Miesha Tate to win the women’s 135-pound belt at UFC 200. Heavyweight champion cut a quiet path of dominance through the UFC’s biggest division by knocking out Andrei Arlovski, Fabricio Werdum, and Alistair Overeem for a monumental 2016.

It was an absolutely insane year for MMA in 2016, so it’s hard to pick one clear-cut winner for the best fighter. Who is your pick?

Cody Garbrandt with some rather…interesting trash talk…

UFC 207 is just days away now, and the hyping trash talk rests on the shoulders of the co-main event stars. After it was revealed that Ronda Rousey would be doing no media shows, Dominick Cruz and Cody Garbrandt stepped it up a notch. Reigning two-time bantamweight champion ‘The Dominator’ chooses a unique intellectual approach to his talking game. Since taking up a job as FOX analyst we’ve seen a new side to Cruz, and he sews it in to his trash talk well.

Recent highlights include Cruz trolling Garbrandt’s girlfriend, and ‘No Love’ claiming the champion is old and wanting to retire. After the 135-pound boss took some shots at Team Alpha Male, Garbrandt has in turn tried to make the situation even more tense. His latest comments are about as harsh as it gets, even in the current climate of highly personal insults.

Garbrandt Has No Love For Cruz

Speaking during a recent appearance on ‘Fight Society,’ as quoted by MMAFighting.com, Garbrandt unleashed the beast with his trash talk:

“It’s insecurities man, insecurities. 100%. But dude, it’s funny. It’s like a shark when it smells blood and I smell blood all over that p**sy.

“I have one more man in my way. One more man that is a f**king busted up, crippled, decrepit old man trying to stand in my way… I am going to be world champion. You can put 10 Dominick Cruz’s in front of me, I’ll knock them all out. 10 out of 10.”

Ego

“I’ll give him his respect and give him a rematch, whoop his a** again, h*ll yeah! But that’s only if he asks for the rematch. I think he will. He’s too egotistical to do that. He’s too egotistical. I’ll definitely give him his rematch… Like I said, put 10 Dominick Cruz’s in front of me and I knock them out. Every one of them.”

After such a fierce rivalry, it’s clear that more than just the title is on the line. Pride and bragging rights will go to the victor in Las Vegas his Friday December 30. Props to both men for picking up the ball in Rousey’s absence, but who will be made to eat their many scornful words?

As far as Cody Garbrandt is concerned, Dominick Cruz has done enough to warrant an immediate rematch.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Garbrandt, who challenges Cruz for the bantamweight belt this Friday night at UFC 207, recently told MMAjunkie that he will grant “The Dominator” a rematch after he defeats him.

“He knows what’s going to happen in this fight. I’ll knock him out, so yes, I’ll give him a rematch because I know he’ll cry and bitch about it. So I’ll give him an immediate rematch right away. And then do the same thing that I did the first fight. And then he’ll be ready for his next chapter in his life.”

Garbrandt is unbeaten in his career, including a recent win over Takeya Mizugaki. The 25-year-old has stopped each of his last three opponents and nine of his 10 overall. Only Henry Briones in his second UFC fight pushed Garbrandt to the scorecards.
