Dominick Reyes and Jan Blachowicz are seemingly set to battle for the vacant light heavyweight title.

It was reported by ESPN’s Brett Okamoto earlier on Monday that a contest between the pair was in the works for UFC 253 which takes place September 26.

At the time, it wasn’t clear whether it was a non-title, interim or title bout as the UFC was still figuring out the situation with Jon Jones.

“Breaking: A 205-pound fight between Dominick Reyes (@DomReyes) and Jan Blachowicz (@JanBlachowicz) is in the works for Sept. 26. The fight is nearly agreed to, but the stakes are being worked out. UFC is working with current champ Jon Jones right now to figure out his next move.”

However, with Jones later officially vacating his 205-pound crown, it appears we may have our answer.

Reyes is coming off a controversial but close unanimous decision defeat to Jones in their title fight at UFC 247 back in February. It was his first career defeat as he has heavily campaigned for a rematch since.

Blachowicz, meanwhile, is on a three-fight winning streak following his recent knockout of Corey Anderson. In total, he has also won seven of his last eight outings.

UFC 253 will be headlined by a middleweight title bout between Israel Adesanya and Paulo Costa. That means we could be set for a double header with two title fights taking place on the night.

The light heavyweight division has been at a standstill since champion Jon Jones took time off after defeating Dominick Reyes at UFC 247.

Speaking to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, Dana White said that there is going to be another title fight in the division before the end of the year.  He also told Okamoto that he was waiting to hear back from Jones today regarding his plans in the division.

“Dana White just told me there WILL be another light heavyweight title fight before the end of 2020. He said he’s actually waiting to hear back from Jon Jones today, regarding what will happen with the division.”

Jones made headlines earlier this year after requesting a fight at heavyweight against top contender, knockout artist Francis Ngannou. The UFC was not interested in entertaining the money Jones was requesting for the fight which saw a dispute arise between the two parties, both claiming different stories.

White told MMA Journalist The Schmo that if Jones planned to stay at Light Heavyweight where he is currently the champion he would have to face Dominick Reyes again.

The two had a close fight in February that saw Jones edge Reyes out on the scorecards. Many saw the victory for Reyes which started the intrigue to see a rematch between the two. Reyes himself has been calling for the rematch ever since although Jones looked to see the rising contender Jan Blachowicz as the next deserving title challenger after he defeated Cory Anderson.

It remains to be seen what Jones’s plans are in terms of divisions, especially after seeing the trilogy between Stipe and DC this weekend.

Jones has voiced his desire to move up in divisions and face both Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier, however, with Ngannou as the number one contender it would seem he is next in line for the winner of this weekends main event.

Dominick Reyes Calls For Jon Jones To Get Stripped Of Light Heavyweight Title

Reyes Jones

Dominick Reyes is getting frustrated at the lack of movement in the light heavyweight division.

Current champion Jon Jones hasn’t competed since his controversial unanimous decision win over Reyes at UFC 247 back in February. The plans for him were to either face Reyes in a rematch or top contender Jan Blachowicz next.

However, “Bones” would later campaign for a super fight at heavyweight with Francis Ngannou only to fall out with the UFC over pay issues. He has since claimed to be vacating his light heavyweight title and taking time away from the sport until he is paid his worth.

It’s been a while since with no updates on where the light heavyweight division stands. Jones, for one, still remains champion in the UFC rankings. And when quizzed about the current situation, UFC president Dana White recently revealed he’s only thinking about Fight Island for now and that things at 205 would be sorted out eventually.

Reyes: If You’re Done, You’re Stripped

But that is only more frustrating for Reyes who believes if Jones is really done, he should vacate the belt, if not get stripped of it.

“If he’s not gonna fight, then you’re done,” Reyes recently told SiriusXM (via MMA Mania). “You’re done, you’re stripped, it’s over because he retired. I mean I guess it’s not stripped, it’s more retired.

“He said he’d walk away … I don’t know, he’s trying to twist and make it so he can get more fans, ‘I’m a champion for the fighters, I’m doing all these other things.’ He should have just fought me. You can’t sit out two years with a new champion and then be like, ‘Well, I’m the undisputed champ.’ You quit.”

Reyes certainly has a point. Even if Jones still remains champion and isn’t fighting anytime soon, one option could be an interim title fight between Reyes and Blachowicz in the meantime.

Hopefully, we get some updates after the Fight Island events end this month.
