Dominick Reyes would like to see Jon Jones punished for his latest infraction — but he also wants to dole it out on his own.

Jones was in the headlines once again in March when he was arrested for aggravated DWI and negligent use of a firearm among other things. Although things were settled with a plea bargain deal, many have been calling for the UFC to punish “Bones” for yet another infraction with the law.

Reyes — who suffered a close unanimous decision defeat to Jones at UFC 247 in February — was one of them as he was surprised the champion managed to find himself in trouble even during a worldwide pandemic.

“For me, [this latest arrest] was like are you kidding me? And then it was relief that he didn’t do that before our fight,” Reyes told MMA Fighting. “He made it to the fight. That was actually a big concern. I stated that before the fight. My concern is that he makes it to the fight because at the time, I think I called him a liability.

“It’s the same crap. Same story, different day. Jon just being Jon. Can’t get out of his own way. It’s not a good look for him as himself but being a champion of the sport, it’s also not a good look because you’re going to have people think you can do the wrong things and still be OK.”

Ideally, Reyes wants to see Jones punished and stripped of his title.

But given how close his fight with Jones was in February, that would also rob him of the chance at making things right in a rematch.

“That’s really my only concern,” Reyes said of a rematch. “All the other stuff, honestly as [the] general public, not as a fighter, he should probably be stripped. Because you can’t go around doing those things and have no repercussions.

“As a fighter and as the guy who wants to fight him, I want to be the one to serve him justice. That’s where I am with that. I want to fight him. Just as a sports fan, somebody that’s looking at doing something, there should be repercussions for your actions. As a fighter, I want to beat him up.”

That said, “The Devastator” will fight anyone if the reward includes UFC gold.

“If there’s shiny gold at the end of the tunnel, I’m there,” Reyes added. “I don’t care who it is.”

Dominick Reyes Open To Interim Title Fight With Jan Blachowicz But Wants Jon Jones Rematch

Reyes Blachowicz

Dominick Reyes is more than willing to fight Jan Blachowicz next. However, his priority remains a rematch with Jon Jones.

Reyes pushed Jones to the limit in their light heavyweight title fight at UFC 247 back in February with many believing he had done enough to earn the victory. In the end, Jones earned the unanimous decision nod with calls for an immediate rematch since.

However, another contender has emerged in Blachowicz, who after knocking Corey Anderson out a week after UFC 247, confronted Jones who was in attendance. “Bones” also seems receptive to facing the Polish knockout artist next.

At this point, it’s hard to say who will get the next title shot. Nobody would complain if Reyes earned another opportunity, but at the same time, it’s hard to deny Blachowicz who has won seven of his last eight outings.

Reyes wouldn’t mind facing Blachowicz for an interim title either. But given that there were already talks of a rematch with Jones before the COVID-19 situation escalated, he is confident he will get a second crack.

“I think he’s a fantastic fighter,” Reyes told MMA Fighting of Blachowicz in a recent interview. “I think he’s one of the most technical guys in the division. I think he has some really good power. I think he’s just a technical beast and he has a lot of experience to where he’s wise with his technical ability. I’ve been wanting to fight Jan since I beat Jared Cannonier.

“I don’t know if you guys know or remember, I called him out right after the fight. This is a guy I’ve been wanting to fight for a minute, so if there’s an interim then yeah, hell yeah, let’s do it. But I think we’re gonna get that rematch first.”

If it is Blachowicz who gets Jones next, Reyes will either have to wait for the winner of that fight or face another contender in the meantime. And given the new names in the division, “The Devastator” is more than willing to remain active in what he believes is an exciting weight class again.

“I freakin’ love it,” Reyes added of the state of the light heavyweight division. “When I first got in the UFC, I was just always talking about trying to revive the division, being the new face of 205. We’ve got guys coming up, but I’m just the leader of the class. And that’s exactly what’s happening. The division is gonna be exciting as long as I’m in the division. It’s gonna be a lot of fun. There’s a lot of great matchups out there for me. The list is so long now, it’s so exciting. I’ll just throw out a couple of names of guys that I respect in the division that I think I’ll fight in the future.

“So we’ve got Aleksander Rakic, we’ve got [Ion] Cutelaba, we’ve got [Jiri Prochazka], but we’ve got to see how how he fights. Corey Anderson, Johnny Walker, Jan, Thiago, this is gonna be great. This is gonna be a fun next seven or eight years.”

Blachowicz

Jon Jones has told fans he wants to fight Polish contender Jan Blachowicz rather than rematch Dominick Reyes next.

Jones successfully defended his belt against Dominick Reyes at UFC 247 earlier this year. The light-heavyweight champion earned a unanimous decision on the judge’s scorecards however many fans and pundits believe Reyes did enough to win the fight.

Reyes told MMA Junkie the UFC is on board with making a rematch between the pair but accused Jones of avoiding another “dog fight”, he said. “I know the UFC is on board. I know I’m on board. The issue is Jon right now. He’s going to say he’s down online, obviously on Twitter. When he gets those contracts in front of him, he’s a little different. That’s where we’re at.”

“It was a straight dog fight, brother,” Reyes added. “The last fight was a pure dog fight. I don’t think he wants to do that again. I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t think Jon Jones wants these hands again. He doesn’t want to get in this dog fight with me. That’s where we’re at.”

Jones took to social media last night to deny claims he’s avoiding another dog fight. The 205lb great said he’s simply looking to take on fresh opponents.

“Now suddenly I’m afraid of a good dogfight? Pretty sure I walked him down for 25 minutes straight when we fought. One thing about being the champion of the world, you got to search for fresh meat on every soil. I’m feeling like popping some cherries in Poland, haven’t had that yet.”

Jones and Blachowicz previously agreed to fight after the Polish power-puncher knocked out Corey Anderson at UFC Rio Rancho in February. It’s hard to say he doesn’t deserve a title shot after he previously beat Luke Rockhold and Jacare Souza during his current three-fight winning streak.
