In the lead-up to UFC Denver, much of the talk surrounding the event was fixed on Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Mike Winkeljohn.

Apparently, Winkeljohn showed favoritism for gym newcomer Mike Perry, who Winkeljohn opted to train over Jackson-Wink veteran Cerrone due to financial reasons. This led to a harsh back-and-forth between both men through the media. When it was all said and done, Cerrone submitted Perry in the first round of their UFC Denver co-main event.

Now, Cerrone is teasing a possible lightweight match-up with UFC mega-star Conor McGregor. Meanwhile, Winkeljohn seems to be getting some hate online from internet trolls. It seems the situation with fan-favorite Cerrone has upset fans, and the veteran coach is feeling the backlash online.

As it turns out, Winkeljohn said he doesn’t pay too much attention to social media and is much more focused on more pressing matters. One of those being coaching Jon Jones for his upcoming Octagon return against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 232 next month. Winkeljohn spoke to “Submission Radio” recently and discussed the hate he’s receiving online.

The ordeal seems to have little to no effect on Winkeljohn:

“What’s funny is that I don’t even look at the internet, so I don’t even know what’s going on. People come tell me, they come running to me to tell me, but I could care less. I see it as we’re very successful, people want to take us down, they’re jealous of our success.

“And so I expect more and more of it to come in the future. I’m doing great, man. I love my job, I’m going to go in now and work with Jon Jones. I’m real excited about the future and I’m so glad I’m not doing anything else for a living.”

Photo: ‘Cowboy’s’ Armbar Didn’t Actually Break Mike Perry’s Arm

It turns out Donald Cerrone’s armbar on Mike Perry didn’t break any of “Platinum’s” bones after all.

“Cowboy” Cerrone picked up a big win over the weekend (Sat. November 10, 2018) in Denver.

Cerrone submitted Mike Perry in the first round via armbar. It was a very personal fight for “Cowboy,” who had some issues with Perry’s new trainer, Mike Winkeljohn. When Cerrone locked in the armbar, it looked very painful, especially when he went belly-down on Perry’s arm.

The initial belief was that Perry’s arm was broken, as “Platinum” said as much in a post-fight Tweet:

However, the 27-year-old recently revealed on his Instagram story that his arm actually isn’t broken. He shared a photo of an x-ray of his arm, which was fully intact. Now, Perry will undergo an MRI to determine if there’s any ligament, tendon, or muscle damage:

“This is my arm. No bones look broke but mri Thursday will show ligament, tendon and muscle damage”

Perry has now lost three of his last four fights inside the Octagon. However, he is still one of the promotion’s most entertaining fighters, and will likely once again receive a fun match-up next. As for Cerrone, he has now declared his intentions to drop back down to lightweight.

It looks like he has his eyes on a fight with former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor.

‘Cowboy’ Cerrone Gunning For UFC Lightweight Title

Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone seems to be gunning for a UFC lightweight title opportunity after his submission victory over Mike Perry at UFC Denver.

Donald Cerrone has declared his intentions to drop back down to lightweight.

“Cowboy” picked up a big win over Mike Perry this past Saturday (November 10, 2018). He submitted “Platinum” in the first round of their UFC Denver co-main event. After the fight, Cerrone spoke to reporters about his next planned contest.

He doubled down on his intentions to return to lightweight, and wants to challenge for the 155-pound title once again (via Bloody Elbow):

“I don’t know if we can be anymore clear about it, can we? 155, I think the New Year Eve’s card will be cool, I’ll fight on Fight Pass I don’t give a sh-t, I’ll be the first fight of the night. But yeah let’s make a run, let’s train hard and be focused, let’s go get a motherf—king belt.

“I’m 182 pounds right now, that’s what I walked in at for fight week, this is heavy for me. When I’m at 155 pounds I’m usually around 176 pounds. I’m gonna have to hire a dietitian because that last five pounds sucks. Who I want [to fight]? Don’t care, but there is somebody they already came up and told me, it’s very exciting.”

Cerrone has challenged for a lightweight title in the UFC before. After racking up an eight-fight win streak, he fought then-lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos for the strap. Interestingly enough at that point, the last man to have defeated “Cowboy” was, in fact, “RDA.”

Dos Anjos defeated Cerrone in just over a minute via TKO. Now “Cowboy” will once again attempt to get back to title contention at 155 pounds.
