UFC Busan provided a bunch of Korean fighters with a massive platform to shine in late 2019. Chan Sung Jung did just that by beating former UFC champion Frankie Edgar in emphatic fashion during the nights main event. However his compatriot Doo Ho Choi suffer a third straight loss against Charles Jourdain. The ‘Korean Superboy’ is without a win since 2016 and will take two years out of the sport to undergo his mandatory South Korean military service. Despite this he has the backing of Jung to return to the top of the sport in 2022. Speaking to MMA Fighting, he said.

“I know
how strong Doo Ho Choi is. Anyone who has seen him spar or has sparred with him
will know. As long as he keeps his mind at check, he’ll keep on improving
because he is still quite young.”

“Doo Ho
will be undergoing the same [public service] during his time in the military
and will be able to train individually like I did. “I think one’s ability to
improve and develop depends on how you spend that time.

“Two
years isn’t a short time so it’s going to be mentally draining, but in order to
become a top-class fighter, this is also a milestone that one needs to
overcome.”

Beyond himself
and Choi, the ‘Korean Zombie’ was optimistic about the talent in his country
after a successful UFC Busan. Da Un Jung, Jun Yong Park and Seung Woo Choi were
all winners that night. As was Kyung Ho Kang, who was the subject of some individual
praise from Jung.

“Kyung Ho showed us what he’s capable of, and as for the other Korean fighters, I believe they are all gaining experience in a good way. Being able to win in their home country will definitely help them in the future, especially in their careers.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)

Can Doo Ho Choi get back to
winning ways after another two years out of the sport?

“The Korean Superboy” Doo Ho Choi is set to make his Octagon return – but it won’t be against Cub Swanson. The Las Vegas-based promotion has announced that Choi is set to return to fighting action at UFC Busan in South Korea.

Choi will be taking on Canada’s Charles Jourdain from the Sajik Arena on December 21.

Choi emerged as somewhat of a fan favorite with his vicious knockout streak upon entering the UFC back in 2014. He was then matched up against veteran Cub Swanson at UFC 206 in 2016. Although Choi didn’t pick up the win, he went five rounds with Swanson in what was an absolute war, and Fight Of The Year.

He then returned against Jeremy Stephens at UFC St. Louis in January of 2018, where he was finished in the second round. Choi is looking to end his two-fight losing skid when he makes the walk to the Octagon in front of his native Korean crowd this December. He’ll take on Jourdain, a 9-2 prospect who comes off an unsuccessful UFC debut, dropping a decision to Desmond Green in May.

What do you think about Doo Ho Choi making his Octagon return in South Korea this December?

If Cub Swanson wants to rematch Doo Ho Choi, “The Korean Superboy” is down for it. Swanson comes off of a unanimous decision victory over Kron Gracie in the UFC Tampa co-main event. After the fight, speaking backstage, Swanson called for a rematch with his former opponent – which was Fight Of The Year in 2016.

“I’m definitely [interested in a rematch]. I feel like me and him owe the fans that, to do it again,” Swanson said. “I would like to see him get a win, he hasn’t really been that active. But for us to do that again, I think people would love that. I’m down.”

Swanson and Choi first fought at UFC 206 in an amazing back-and-forth brawl. However, when it was all said and done, Swanson took home the decision victory. Responding to Swanson’s call for a rematch on Instagram, Choi accepted the challenge, but noted any fight would have to wait until after his mandatory military service in South Korea is wrapped up.

“Swanson’s recent fight was amazing and he is a fighter that I have always respected. I came across his recent interview that he believes that we need to have a rematch in which we owe to the fans. I also strongly feel the same but unfortunately I haven’t finished my military duties where it restricts me from flying overseas.

“Also I understand that he was just fought in UFC Fight Night 161 and that he would need to rest and recover but if him and the UFC can organize a fight in Busan, I guarantee that it will be the craziest fight of 2019!”

What do you think about Choi accepting a rematch with Swanson down the road?
