Saturday’s UFC 206 fight between Cub Swanson and Dooho Choi ended up being important for both men moving forward.

Swanson, ranked inside the Top-5 at featherweight, kept his standing by scoring a decision in a featured bout from the Air Canada Centre.

But Choi, a youngster, learned a valuable lesson in defeat to the veteran.

The bout earned “Fight of the Night” bonuses for both and is being mentioned for “Fight of the Year.”

UFC 206 went down from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada tonight (Saturday, December 10, 2016). Fans were treated to a truly unforgettable night of action.

To no one’s surprise, Cub Swanson and Dooho Choi were awarded matching $50,000 Fight of the Night bonuses for their legendary encounter on the pay-per-view main card. While it was officially made Fight of the Night at the post-fight press conference, many are predicting that it stole Fight of the Year honors as well. The two power-punching featherweights bludgeoned each other over fifteen minutes of increasingly dramatic and draw-dropping action. Both men would be rocked during the battle, but both refused to back down, refused to go away. Swanson did just a bit more down the stretch to capture a unanimous verdict from the judges, but the young ‘Korean Superboy’ figures to raise his stock significantly, even in defeat.

Elsewhere in main card action, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone captured one of two Performance of the Night bonuses for his climactic head kick finish of nemesis Matt Brown in the co-headliner. The two welterweights engaged in their own blood-and-guts battle in which each man hit the deck during the first ten minutes. On another night, Cerrone and Brown may have taken home Fight of the Night honors. Cerrone sealed the victory – and his own bonus check – with crushing walk-off head kick knockout a minute into round three. Cerrone has finished four straight opponents since moving up the scales to the welterweight division.

Finally, Lando Vannata banked his own $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus check in the Fight Pass featured prelim. The Jackson-Wink product performed the night’s first walk-off head kick knockout, but this was of the spinning wheel kick variety. His heel met John Makdessi’s chin and separated him from consciousness in the first round of their lightweight tussle. It was the second resounding performance for Vannata in two UFC appearances.

UFC 206 emanated from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Canada tonight (Saturday, December 10, 2016). It was an event for the ages.

In the main event, Max Holloway defeated Anthony Pettis via TKO to become the interim featherweight champion, lining up a matchup with Jose Aldo. The two strikers sniped and peppered one another throughout the abbreviated five-round affair. In the end, though, Holloway’s relentless pressure, greater volume, and perhaps Pettis’ compromised gas tank led to a victory for the Hawaiian.

The co-main event featured welterweight action fighters Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone and Matt ‘The Immortal’ Brown duking it out for just over two rounds. Both men were dropped inside the first ten mintues in a back-and-forth battle. ‘Cowboy’ brought the proceedings to a close about a minute into the third round when he landed a head kick flush to Brown’s jaw, dropping him where he stood. No follow-up punches were necessary. The win marked Cerrone’s fourth straight victory – and fourth straight finish – since moving to welterweight earlier this year.

But the unquestioned fight of the night – and a serious contender for Fight of the Year – came from two other featherweights on the main card in Cub Swanson and Dooho Choi. The two engaged in a slobberknocker of epic proportions, each finding the mark multiple times with seeming fight-ending blows. Despite each being badly hurt at various points, neither man would give an inch. They banged it out until the very end, with Swanson doing just a bit more down the stretch to take a unanimous decision. The violence gods were satisfied.

Following a streak of failed opportunities when Georges St-Pierre couldn’t headline and Daniel Cormier was then forced out of the main event slot, UFC 206 was still able to deliver one of the most exciting cards of the year this evening (Sat., December 10, 2016) from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario.

In the main, surging featherweight Max Holloway scored his tenth straight victory over former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, battering the star with a relentless onslaught of punches to secure the interim featherweight championship and a future date with champion Jose Aldo. In the co-main event, Donald Cerrone knocked out Matt Brown with a massive head kick in the third round of an exciting back-and-forth brawl, and featherweights Cub Swanson and Doo Ho Choi threw down in what could easily go down as Fight of the Year.

A featherweight clash between two hard hitting 145’ers has been made for UFC 206 in December. UFC officials have announced that the No. 5-ranked Cub Swanson and No. 14-ranked Dooho Choi will meet later this year.

Swanson (23-7) is riding a two-fight win streak with his two unanimous decision wins over Hacran Dias and Tatsuya Kawajiri. Before embarking on his win streak, however, Swanson suffered two consecutive losses via submission.

Max Holloway most recently submitted Swanson in April of last year via guillotine choke, and Frankie Edgar in November of 2014 via neck crank at UFC Fight Night 57.

Choi (15-1) is looking as impressive as any other featherweight prospect right now, looking to continue his astounding eight-fight knockout streak when he takes center Octagon against Swanson.

‘The Korean Superboy’ has some tremendous power in his hands, with 12 of his 15 career wins coming via knockout. Can the 25-year-old continue his winning ways against Swanson?

Below is the updated card for UFC 206 in December:

(C) Daniel Cormier vs. Anthony Johnson

Poliana Botelho vs. Valerie Letourneau

Zach Makovsky vs. John Moraga

John Makdessi vs. Lando Vannata

Olivier Aubin-Mercier vs. Drew Dober

Swanson (23-7) owns eight Octagon wins in 11 fights, including victories over Hacran Dias and Tatsuya Kawajiri. He had contemplated retirement following losses to Frankie Edgar and Max Holloway before deciding to continue his career.

Choi (15-1) has taken the world by storm, as “The Korean Superboy” owns 13 consecutive wins. Included in that run are eight knockouts and two “Performance of the Night” bonuses. The 25-year-old has bested Juan Puig, Sam Sicilia and Thiago Tavares since signing with the UFC.

UFC 206 takes place December 10 from Toronto and the Air Canada Centre. Daniel Cormier vs. Anthony Johnson for the light heavyweight title is the expected main event.
