DREAM 17 Results: Banuelos, Fernandes Advance in Bantamweight World GP

Earlier this morning, DREAM 17 went down in Saitama, Japan. For those of you who have been reading this website for a while now, you know the drill. For those of you who are new here, first off, welcome. Second, DREAM publishes the results of their fights immediately after they happen, but the fights aren’t typically aired on HDNet until a later date. So if you feel like you’ve already read the results from somewhere or already saw the fights, well, you probably have. However, if you were really drunk last night and want to refresh your memory on what you saw (not that we condone that sort of thing), or are too disinterested in DREAM to have stayed in to watch it, then come inside where we have full results waiting after the jump.

Still here? Good. Try not to act too surprised, but Shinya Aoki managed to dump another striker on his back and work for a submission last night. While Rob McCullough managed to get back to his feet after Aoki’s first takedown, he proceeded to do absolutely nothing until getting taken down again. Another impressive performance from Aoki, albeit against questionable competition.

In other non-tournament action, Takeshi Inoue dazzled the Japanese crowd with a head kick knockout of Caol Uno. Sorry, we don’t have a video of that for you. In far more predictable news, Tatsuya Kawajiri submitted Joachim Hansen with an arm triangle in the third round, Sakuraba lost yet another fight, this time to Yan Cabral, Gerald Harris picked up a split decision victory over Kazuhiro Nakamura and Ikuhisa Minowa submitted another oversized freak,  Baru Harn. And yes, we actually DO have a video of that.

 

In Bantamweight World Grand Prix action, UFC veteran Antonio Banuelos picked up a split decision victory over Hideo Tokoro. This fight was his first since being canned by the UFC after a unanimous decision loss to Miguel Torres at UFC 126. Bibiano Fernandes, Masakazu Imanari, and Rodolfo Marques also advanced to the next round with victories last night.

Shinya Aoki faces Razor Rob at Dream.17.MMA Fighting has Dream.17 results for Shinya Aoki vs. “Razor” Rob McCullough and the rest of the Sept. 24 fights from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

In a non-title bout, Dream lightweight champion Aoki became the first person to submit ex-WEC titleholder McCullough, slapping on a neck crank late in the first round. Meanwhile, Antonio Banuelos, Bibiano Fernandes, Masakazu Imanari and Rodolfo Marques all won quarterfinal bouts to advance in the Bantamweight World Grand Prix.

Reminder: DREAM 17 Goes Down this Saturday

With all the buzz surrounding UFC 135, you might have forgotten that DREAM 17 transpires Saturday, and features a pretty stacked card to boot. Japanese legend Kasushi Sakuraba returns to action for the first time since nearly having his ear torn off by Marius Zaromskis, taking on undefeated submission specialist Yan Cabral. Sakuraba is currently riding a three-fight losing streak including the aforementioned loss to Zaromskis as well as a submission loss to Jason “Mayhem” Miller at Dream 16 and a unanimous decision loss to Ralek Gracie back at Dream 14. “The Gracie Hunter” is in desperate need of a win here to avoid falling into Ken Shamrock territory, though some critics out there feel he already has.

Aoki has technically gone 5-0 fight win streak since his loss to Gilbert Melendez at Strikeforce: Nashville; this is of course excluding his embarrassing knockout loss to Yuichiro “Jienotsu” Nagashima in a mixed rules match at Dynamite!! 2010. But hey, if Sherdog doesn’t count it, then it never happened. McCullough on the other hand recently had a two fight win streak snapped by the heavy hands of Patricky Friere back at Bellator 36.

And if that lineup hasn’t yet convinced you, Pride veteran Joachim Hansen will be taking on Tatsuya Kawajiri in a rematch of their 2006 Shooto welterweight title fight that ended just 8 seconds in due to an illegal groin strike by Hansen. With all these intriguing match-ups, DREAM 17 is looking to be one of the most promising outings for Japanese MMA in quite some time. Check out the new “fight order announcement” trailer below…

DREAM’s first large-scale event for for the year got it’s tenth bout on Thursday afternoon as MMA legend Kazushi Sakuraba has signed to fight DREAM newcomer and Nova Uniao submission ace Yan Cabral at DREAM.17 on Sept. 24 at Saitama Super Arena, Tokyo, Japan.

Sakuraba has not competed since his heavily cauliflowered ear was partially torn off in his Dec. 31, 2010 bout with DREAM welterweight champion Marius Zaromskis. The gruesome ear injury continued a run of losses for Sakuraba; the “Gracie Hunter” also falling to the much less experienced Ralek Gracie and suffering a submission loss to Jason “Mayhem” Miller.

Yan Cabral, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt who first trained with Carlson Gracie before joining the highly respected Nova Uniao camp, comes into the bout with a perfect 9-0 record with every victory coming by way of submission. Cabral is particularly adept at the arm-triangle choke — a submission that has brought him victory on four occasions and also gave Kazushi Sakuraba the only submission losses of his career.

Todd Duffee Returns to the Scene of the Crime, Faces ‘Afrozilla’ at Dream.17

Bulky UFC vet Todd Duffee has been a ghost since getting stormed by Alistair Overeem last New Year’s Eve in Saitama. But he finally has his next fight booked, and once again it’ll be in front of a Japanese audience. According to Nightmare of Battle, Duffee will compete on the Dream.17 card against undefeated KOTC standout Nick “Afrozilla” Gaston, who had to have been signed at least partly for his nickname.

(For those of you who were just struck by a weird feeling of deja-vu, let us clarify: Dream.17 is the event coming up on July 16th at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo. The Dream event that happened on May 29th was known alternately as “Fight for Japan!” and “Japan GP – 2011 Bantamweight Japan Tournament,” even though many people, including ourselves, referred to it as Dream.17. Anyway, we’re back to the numbers now, which are always easier to deal with.)

So what do we know about Gaston? Well, he’s 5-0 (with 1 no-contest), and has spent his entire pro career fighting under the King of the Cage banner. Four of his wins came by stoppage in the first two rounds; one of those wins was a second-round TKO against Darrill “TUF Titties” Schoonover, and he most recently dispatched 2-11 sad-case Jerry Burns at an event in April. Before he started fighting, Gaston wrestled at Ohio State University. In 2009, he appeared on an episode of Bully Beatdown, where he made his bully-victim tap out five times in 96 seconds, then quit before the striking portion of the show.

Afrozilla may not be Ubereem, but he’s certainly legit, and if Duffee wants to snap his two-fight losing streak he’ll have to work for it. Dream.17 is also slated to feature the bantamweight tournament final between Masakazu Imanari and Hideo Tokoro, and Gegard Mousasi’s light-heavyweight title defense against Hiroshi Izumi.

The Dream.17 fight card will be highlighted by a pair of championship bouts and the finals of the 2011 Dream Bantamweight Grand Prix on July 16 at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo.

As decided with a pair of wins each on the May 29 Dream card, Masakazu Imanari and Hideo Tokoro will meet in the finals of the Bantamweight Grand Prix. Also, ZST champion Keisuke Fujiwara re-enters the Bantamweight Grand Prix replacing the injured Atsushi Yamamoto in a third-place bout.

In championship bouts, Gegard Mousasi will put his light heavyweight belt on the line against Hiroshi Izumi, while Hiroyuki Takaya defends his featherweight strap against Kazuyuki Miyata.
