(I have to admit, I was skeptical when FEG announced their business plan using a map with a spaceship on it that would shuttle fighters to events around the world.)

Ever since news of DREAM stiffing a number of fighters of their contracted fight purses including Gary Goodridge, Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza and featherweight champ Bibiano Fernandes, rumors have been running rampant about how dire of financial difficulty the Japanese promotion is in.

Nightmare of Battle does a great job in summing up exactly what the issues have been for FEG that have led to the company being barely able to keep its head above water.

DREAM Featherweight Champ Bibiano Fernandes Still Hasn’t Been Paid for DREAM 13; Turns Down September Title Defense

("Does anybody know the name of the pawnshop Jake Shields uses?")

Apparently DREAM has become the Michael Lohan of the MMA world.

According to TATAME, five months after he won the DREAM featherweight tournament, Bibiano Fernandes hasn’t been paid his contracted fight purse. Unlike the Impact FC fighters who haven’t been paid for their July fights by the Australian promotion, Fernandes has something over the Japanese promotion he is contracted to for one more bout: his belt.

The report says that Fernandes has turned down a title defense on the September 25 DREAM 16 card and maintains that he won’t fight for the organization until he receives his check for his win over Joachim Hansen at DREAM 13 back in March.

Shinya Aoki Discusses the Need “to Destroy the Other Foot”

Seems like we’ve had a bit of theme going here lately,  in that every second post here on Fix, deals with guys who know how to ‘maximize’ their mic potential. Meaning, there are certain dudes in MMA with a rep for saying stuff that either incites laughter, anger, or both. That makes for good copy folks. This post will journey beyond James Toney and Chael Sonnen (surprisingly), and over to Japan, to pass along some rather interesting comments from Dream Lightweight champ Shinya Aoki. As you probably know, Mr. Aoki isn’t just famous for his ‘holy sheet’ submissions, he’s also been know for saying / doing things that are…well, ‘colorful.’

In a recent interview with MMA Fighting Aoki discussed his recent tap-out victory over Tatsuya Kawajiri in some detail. Why did we choose the word ‘detail?’ Well check out some of what the submission wiz had to say, while discussing the Achilles Lock he used to seal the deal at Dream 15.

“I actually try to think of this last part of the joint as being non-existent. For example, you can’t move at all if your neck or your backbone is broken, right? But if I am attacking the elbow or the ankle, my opponent can still move. If I break that last remaining part of the joint in the foot and don’t get a tap, my opponent can still move with his other foot then I’d be in a difficult situation. I thought I might have needed to destroy the other foot too.”

All cringing aside…guess Shinya’s got a valid point no?

Shinya Aoki Wanted To Kill All The People That Mocked Him When He Fought Melendez.

Shinya Aoki has a reputation for having perhaps the best leg submissions in mixed martial arts, and scoring yet another win via submission at DREAM.15 against Kawajiri seems to support this point of view. Aoki rebounded from a lack luster fight against Strikeforce fighter Gilbert Melendez, and Aoki doesn’t seem to have forgotten what critics and fans said about that fight. He recently addressed a question regarding his thoughts on getting married, as he said he wanted to do after the fight, and the answer went off track(via MiddleEasy.com)

She supported me in April [at Strikeforce Nashville]. After I lost, many people blamed me, but she helped me through it all. The people who mocked me in my fight versus Melendez, I wanted to kill them all. Even in this fight, too many people said ‘Kawajiri would win!’. I felt like telling these people ‘Go to hell!’. Oh, what was the question? About my marriage…

Gotta love Aoki’s showmanship and his pants.

Shinya Aoki Credits Tatsuya Kawajiri for Having Iron Heart

If your weekend didn’t entail having your ass fixed to the couch for much of it, you may have missed Dream 15 where Shinya Aoki dominated Tatsuya Kawajiri en route to a first round, tap out win (by Achilles Lock). Following Aoki’s one sided decision loss to Gilbert Melendez in April, a lot of people were probably expecting the submission wiz to come out aggressively, and sure enough, the Dream champ immediately took the fight to the ground and did his thing. Of course, ‘his thing’, sometimes entails the horrific bending or breaking of human appendages, and in a post-fight interview with Sports Navi, Mr. “Love Em or Hate Em” Aoki had this to say about Saturday’s win (thanks to MMA Bay for the quote):

“When I caught (Kawajiri) and tried to submit him, I heard a loud crackle sound. He did not tap so I thought ‘Ok, this match just became a death-fight’ and I was going to destroy his leg. I knew Kawajiri never taps so I could not win without breaking his bone. I was hoping for an open-fracture. No one could have endured [that submission] like Kawajiri. His heart is iron.”

It’s not every day you read post fight comments that include the words ‘open fracture’ and ‘death fight’, but hell, it makes for good copy (although the comment about the ’open-fracture’ shouldn’t sit well with most).  As far as the “heart is iron” comment, it’s true, Kawajiri did try to hang in there for what was probably several agonizing moments. As far as his next gig, Aoki’s made it clear that he wants to rematch Melendez in the Dream ring; it’s worth a look no?
