Israel Adesanya shuts down Dricus du Plessis title fight he might have to fight twice more

Currently occupied by a title defense opposite Sean Strickland this weekend at UFC 293, undisputed middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya has now distanced himself firmly from a title outing with Dricus du Plessis, questioning the South African’s claim to a challenge.

Adesanya, a two-time and current undisputed middleweight champion under the banner of the promotion, returns this weekend to top UFC 293 in Sydney, Australia – taking on the surging number four ranked, Strickland at the Qudos Bank Arena.

However, prior to Strickland’s involvement in his premier title fight under the promotion’s scrutiny, Adesanya was expected to fight opposite the newly-minted number one contender, du Plessis.

Landing atop the rankings pile at UFC 290 back in July, Pretoria native, du Plessis stopped former champion and common-opponent, Robert Whittaker with a blistering second round TKO, however, a lingering foot injury ruled him from a quickfire turnaround with Adesanya.

Israel Adesanya unsure on title fight with Dricus du Plessis after UFC 293

And recently playing up the fact that du Plessis may now have missed out on his chance to challenge him, Adesanya, who has been conflicting in his thoughts on a future pairing, stressed that it may not come in the foreseeable future.

“I don’t know – you have to ask Dana (White),” Israel Adesanya told assembled media ahead of UFC 293. “Dricus (du Plessis), doesn’t know how to play the game. Look, you can’t sit on your f*cking – is it ranking or whatever? And you think you’ve got it locked in.”

“This is the UFC, if you look back at the history of the UFC, sh*t happens, you know,” Israel Adesanya explained. “So he thought he was sitting pretty, but he might have to fight two more times before he gets a shot at this.”

Adesanya’s claims follow suit of recent suggestions from his City Kickboxing head coach, Eugene Bareman, how du Plessis may have, in fact, missed his call for a title siege, while UFC leader, White also stressed how he was not a fan of fighters apparently turning down quick turnarounds.

Even UFC heavyweight champ Jon Jones believes Israel Adesanya may have taken things a little too far in his confrontation with top-ranked middleweight contender Dricus Du Plessis.

‘The Last Stylebender’ has been at odds with Du Plessis ever since the South African suggested that he would be the promotion’ first true African world champion. Obviously, those comments struck a chord with former titleholder Kamaru Usman and reigning champion Israel Adesanya. The pair have shared some back-and-forth comments in the media, but it all came to a head at UFC 290 after Du Plessis scored a shocking second-round knockout against perennial contender Robert Whittaker.

Immediately following the win, Adesanya hopped in the cage and engaged in a racially charged confrontation that saw ‘Stylebender’ repeatedly use the N-word while referring to Du Plessis.

Asked his thoughts on the intense face-off between Adesanya and Du Plessis, Jon Jones admitted to finding the whole thing fairly uncomfortable.

“I don’t want to talk sh*t, because Izzy and I have become friends and whatever,” Jones said during a recent appearance on the Kanpai Pandas podcast. “But I was uncomfortable. As a black man, I was uncomfortable my damn self. That was just weird.”

Israel Adesanya Plans on Fighting Dricus Du Plessis Following His UFC 293 Headliner with Sean Strickland

With Du Plessis establishing himself as the No. 1 contender to the middleweight title, fans were hoping to see him square off with ‘Stylebender’ in the UFC 293 main event this month, but the turnaround was simply too short for ‘Stillknocks’ to accept. Instead, Israel Adesanya will step inside the Octagon with the always outspoken and ever-controversial Sean Strickland.

Win or lose, Adesanya still has every intention of settling some business with Dricus Du Plessis, suggesting that it would be the “biggest fight in sporting history.” We’re guessing he’s never heard of the Thrilla in Manilla or Mayweather vs. Pacquiao for more modern fans. But considering Du Plessis’ meteoric, and honestly shocking rise as a legitimate contender, and the tension already boiling over between these two, fight fans are undoubtedly chomping at the bit to see them share the Octagon sooner rather than later.

Adesanya, a two-time and incumbent undisputed middleweight champion, is slated to kick-off his second reign atop the 185lbs pile next month in Sydney, Australia – taking on surging middleweight contender, Sean Strickland in the main event of UFC 293.

Long-slated to serve in a headlining slot on the card, City Kickboxing staple, Adesanya was initially expected to fight the aforenoted number one ranked, du Plessis at the event, however, a lingering foot injury prevented the South African’s timely turnaround for a heated grudge match.

And in recent weeks, Adesanya’s head coach, Eugene Bareman has speculated that his student may assess other options outside of du Plessis post-UFC 293, claiming the Pretoria native may have missed his chance to compete against the reigning champion.

Israel Adesanya comments on future fight with arch-rival Dricus du Plessis

Remaining non-entirely committal on a potential pairing, Nigerian-Kiwi striker, Adesanya claimed that while the pairing comes with great importance, he would see how he felt in regards to the matchup following his return ‘Down Under’.

“We’ll see if he (Dricus du Plessis) shows up, but also, I’ll see how I feel,” Israel Adesanya told MMA Junkie. “I’ll see how I feel. I do want that fight. I feel like that will be one of the most important fights in sporting history. I mean that when I say in history. I’ll see how I feel because again, time keeps on ticking. Time waits for no man.”

Clinching middleweight gold for the second time back in April atop a UFC 287 card, Adesanya landed a second round come-from-behind KO win over division champion, Alex Pereira, stopping the Brazilian with a thunderous knockout.

For du Plessis, the promotional-perfect contender himself claimed that a fight with Adesanya was something he would hope to land in an Octagon-first trip to Africa for the UFC

However, as far as South African finisher, du Plessis is concerned, a title showdown with Adesanya is still certainly possible – as he eyes a first-ever event in Africa for the UFC to host such a grudge match.

“Now, I can make sure I’m ready for that fight [with Israel Adesanya],” Dricus du Plessis said during an appearance on the Te Ao with Moana YouTube channel. “But also, dictate and say, ‘Listen, I’ve always been a gambling man. When they [the UFC] phone and pick up, I say yes. They phoned up Robert Whittaker – it took me a minute, not even – I went, cool, when? Where?”

“I’m definitely saying yes [to a fight with Israel Adesanya], but right now, I wanna really push and make this happen in Africa,” Dricus du Plessis explained. “I wanna push for that. I wanna push for myself and ‘Izzy’ to fight each other in Africa. And I think it’s possible.”

Prior to his win over Whittaker, du Plessis had turned in impressive recent stoppages of common-foe, Derek Brunson, as well as former welterweight title challenger, Darren Till.

“Now, he (Dricus du Plessis) doesn’t wanna fight,” Israel Adesanya said on The Halfcast Podcast. “Even after [UFC 290], he’s like, ‘Oh, bro, all you had to do was put some gloves on, we could have got it on right there.’ B*tch ass, f*ck you wouldn’t have. ‘Cause guess what, he didn’t want it… People were like, ‘Oh, he’s so classy walking away. He’s so (classy).’ I’m like, ‘Bro, he didn’t event walk away. He felt me.’ He didn’t wanna feel me.”

I don’t think he’s a scared man, but I’ll tell you he’s scared of me. You know when you look in someone’s eyes, you just know straight away. He didn’t call me to the cage, I stepped in the cage myself. I didn’t even see him call me… I stepped into the cage because I made this sh*t happen. This motherf*cker – I hope, I really was hoping he’d f*cking step up. But he’s a b*tch, and I’ll tell you right now. Keep training. Keep training.
