Dricus Du Plessis has stated that Darren Till should make the move back down to 170lbs, as he believes ‘The Gorilla’ does not possess the physicality to compete with the elite of the UFC middleweight division.
At UFC 282, Du Plessis and Till faced off in an exhilarating back and forth that would be later awarded Fight of the Night honors. A dominant first five minutes may have constituted a 10-8 round for ‘Stillknocks,’ but Till would rally in the second, piecing the South African up on the feet. However, in round 3, Du Plessis switched stances, which appeared to throw Till off. A big takedown saw him take full mount, and after Till turned his back, Du Plessis applied a nasty face crank, forcing the tap.
This was Du Plessis’ biggest win to date, and he will likely enter the top 10 of the division come Tuesday. But for Till, he now finds himself in a rough spot. He is now 1-5 in his last 6 fights, with the move up the 185lbs failing the bear fruit.
In a recent video posted to his Instagram, Till assured fans that he would not be retiring, but that he is looking to take a short hiatus from the sport.
Dricus Du Plessis spoke with press following the win, where he stated that Till is likely best off returning to 170lbs.
“I think Darren proved he’s an incredible fighter, but I do believe if he wants to make any run at being successful, he needs to fight at welterweight,” Du Plessis said. “Honestly felt that tonight. I’m not hating on Darren Till at all, I have all the respect in the world, but he is not strong enough or big enough to fight at middleweight.” (H/T MMA Junkie)
It is not clear what the future holds for Darren Till at this point, but there are several grudge matches for him at welterweight, should he return to the division.

Nate Diaz, a one-time lightweight title challenger under the banner of the UFC, officially became a free agent from the promotion last month, ending a lengthy tenure under the banner of Zuffa LLC.
In his most recent Octagon outing, Nate Diaz snapped a run of back-to-back losses to Jorge Masvidal and welterweight champion, Leon Edwards – securing a September guillotine submission win over former interim lightweight titleholder, Tony Ferguson atop UFC 279.
For Till, the Liverpool native suffered a third consecutive loss at UFC 282 last night against South African middleweight contender, du Plessis – adding to prior defeats to both Derek Brunson, and former champion, Robert Whittaker.

Slumping to a consecutive third defeat, Liverpool native, Till insisted he would not be walking away from the sport for good, however, admitted he likely would be taking a hiatus from the Octagon.
“You don’t always get what you want in this life,” Darren Till said in a video following UFC 282. “It’s tough. F*cking – I’m 29 now, I’ve been at the top of this sport since 2017, i entered into the UFC back in 2015. I’m doing this video ‘cause I feel like you should do it now. The right time’s now – I’m not retiring. This is not a retirement speech. I’m 29. That would be stupid to retire.”
“I’m on a bit of a losing skid at the moment, I really am,” Darren Till explained. “…Whether you love me or hate me, I’m sorry. I don’t know what to do properly. I think I’m gonna have a little time off from the UFC, I don’t know. And just rethink stuff. I’m not retiring – I want to fight soon, next year. But I just wanna spend Christmas now with my family. Hope youse loved it, peace out.”

Former undisputed UFC welterweight title challenger, Darren Till has revealed he is planning to take a hiatus from the Octagon following last night’s third round submission loss to Dricus du Plessis on the main card of UFC 282, however, insisted he would not be retiring from mixed martial arts.
Returning for the first time since September of last year, Till entered last night’s clash with du Plessis, off the back of a pair of losses against Derek Brunson, and former undisputed middleweight champion, Robert Whittaker.
Clashing with South African finisher, du Plessis last night at the T-Mobile Arena, Till was almost finished at the Octagon fence in the opening exchanges of the first round, receiving notable punishment both on the feet and with ground strikes.
Darren Till shoots down talk of a potential retirement from MMA
