Dustin Poirier is all in on a potential trilogy bout with Conor McGregor and is hoping to face off against the Irishman for the third time in June or July.

The pair first fought at UFC 178 in 2014. McGregor talked a ton of trash in the build-up to the featherweight fight before scoring a first round KO win against ‘The Diamond’.

Six years on Poirier got his revenge when he knocked out ‘Notorious’ inside two rounds at UFC 257 in January.

The Louisiana native looked sensational as he wrestled early before hammering home calf kicks and showing off his slick boxing to become the first man to KO McGregor in MMA.

Despite putting on a dominant performance just last month, Poirier is refusing to get carried away and he insists the trilogy fight will be “a completely different fight.”

“It’s fighting man, I don’t think you ever really (have someone’s number). He’ll make adjustments. It’ll be a completely different fight,” Dustin Poirier said to Joe Rogan on his podcast. “Like the first one and the second one were different, the third one is going to be different as well. I’m going to make adjustments as well. I’m going to switch it up, keep things fresh and keep him guessing.”

Poirier is hoping the UFC will allow him to enjoy a little more time with his family before booking a summer fight against McGregor.

“June, July. My wife’s birthday is coming up, we’re going to go somewhere for a couple of days,” Dustin Poirier said. “If I get the call and it’s time to go to work, I will lock myself in training camp. But, I’m still not right now ready to go back to Florida a month removed from the last fight and lockdown for another ten weeks or whatever it is.

‘The Diamond’ is ready to go whenever though and willing to fight earlier if that’s what the UFC want.

“We’ll see. If they call, I will do it,” Poirier said. “But, I’d rather it be a little bit further. Let me enjoy my life back home in Louisiana before I go right back out to Florida. I’ll do it anytime, I’ll do it here.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Dustin Poirier pulled off an almighty upset by knocking out Conor McGregor at UFC 257 back in January. Unquestionably, this spoilt Dana White’s plans for a Conor McGregor vs Khabib Nurmagomedov rematch. As well as establishing Poirier as the uncrowned champ in the process. Now ‘The Diamond’ is shedding some light on the impact the lack of trash talk from the Irishman had in the build-up to the fight. Unsurprisingly, it helped Poirier tremendously.

Talking to Joe Rogan on his famous podcast, ‘The Diamond’ admitted that the lack of verbal warfare was hugely welcomed. He followed this up by stating that fighting is crazy enough as it is without the added theatrics. This approach is in stark contrast to the vicious verbal warfare that McGregor dished out in their first meeting back in 2014.

“Fighting is hectic already…It being a little bit more calm for me, was smooth sailing man!”, admitted Poirier.

“So it’s not good for him. It’s really better for him to be an ass hole”, said Joe Rogan. “Yeah, be an asshole,” chimed Poirier.

Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor look set to clash for the third time this summer and finally end their trilogy. It will be interesting to see whether McGregor returns to his verbal assaulting ways. Additionally, the Irishman’s social media posts appear to be pointing towards that direction.

The loss in January derailed McGregor’s Manny Pacquaio fight and caused his hunger for fighting to come into question by many. Undoubtedly, McGregor will be relentless in his attempt to prove the naysayers wrong once again.

ONE Championship lightweight contender, Eddie Alvarez has laid claim to gold across the likes of BodogFIGHT, Bellator, and the UFC across his eighteen-year, and has predicted that either previous foe, Dustin Poirier or the surging, Charles Oliveira will be the next lightweight kingpin of his old UFC stomping-ground.

Alvarez, who is currently preparing for a high-stakes, potential title-eliminator against former title challenger, Iuri Lapicus in April at ONE on TNT I — may earn the opportunity to challenge current kingpin Christian Lee for the lightweight championship with a victory.

Set to make his return for the first time in over eighteen-months, Alvarez got off the mark at the second time of trying under his new banner — stopping former two-time gold holder, Eduard Folayang via a first round submission. Debuting under the Chatri Sityodtong led promotion back in March of 2019, Alvarez dropped a devastating knockout to Timofey Nastyukin at ONE Championship: A New Era.

With current undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov remaining firm on his stance to retire following his October win over Justin Gaethje — Alvarez picked either Poirier or Oliveira to emerge strapped with gold after the reign of Nurmagomdov comes to an end, or at the turn of the new year.

I think Dustin’s (Poirier) probably gonna end up with the belt,” Alvarez said during a recent interview with LowKick MMA reporter, Jordan Ellis. “I think either Dustin or (Charles) Oliveira — either one of them.

Earning his lightweight championship shot during his UFC run, Alvarez took decision wins over former Strikeforce 155-pound titleholder, Gilbert Melendez, and former WEC and UFC lightweight best, Anthony Pettis. Battling then-champion, Rafael dos Anjos during International Fight Week back in the summer of 2016, Alvarez entered the fight as a considerable underdog — before clinching the title with a first-round barrage, stopping the Brazilian with strikes at the fence.

Nate Diaz Says Dustin Poirier Is A ‘Lil B*tch’ For Taking McGregor Trilogy

Nate Diaz had some strong words for Dustin Poirier after he was the latest to turn down his fight offer.

Diaz hasn’t fought since he went toe-to-toe with Jorge Masvidal for the BMF Title in November 2019. He has recently been hinting at making his comeback, but finding a willing dance partner has proven to be a difficult task. He initially called out top lightweight contender Charles Oliveira, but that was quickly shot down by the Brazilian’s coach. That caused Diaz to turn his attention towards Poirier, but he now appears to be on track towards a third fight with Conor McGregor.

Apparently upset with the lack of top-ranked opposition willing to face him, Diaz took to Instagram to vent his frustration. In a post featuring a picture of him choking out McGregor, Diaz took aim at Poirier and UFC president Dana White.

“Don’t forget who started this G s—,” Diaz wrote in the caption. “The Real uncrowned King. No rematches ever given. Dustin you do what your told by your daddies u lil b—-.”

A fight between Diaz and Poirier was originally expected to take place at UFC 230, but never came to fruition. After knocking out McGregor at UFC 257, Poirier said Diaz was one of the fights he had his eyes on. However, recent reports make it appear that he is solely focused on completing his trilogy against McGregor. He even took to the Instagram post to have a little fun with Diaz.

Diaz has made it clear in the past that he is only interested in taking big-money fights at this point in his career. With arguably the top two draws on a collision path with each other, it will be interesting to see who, if anyone, the UFC could entice Diaz with. There are a number of top lightweight contenders without a fight at the moment, but they appear more interested in fighting each other than Diaz. Will Diaz be willing to take a fight against a lower ranked fighter in hopes of making a statement? Only time will tell.
