Conor McGregor has taken to social media to confirm he is “about to return” against Dustin Poirier amid speculation a deal for the lightweight pair to rematch at UFC 257 is done.

Earlier today MMA Fighting reported both McGregor and Poirier had come to terms for a rematch on January 23. UFC president Dana White refuted those claims in an interview with Brett Okamoto, saying he was hopeful of making the fight but insisting it is not done.

McGregor has now taken to Instagram to confirm he is set to return against ‘The Diamond’ soon, while also taking a trip down memory lane as he riffs about their first match-up.

“The first time I came face to face with Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier. Las Vegas Nevada, August 2014,” McGregor wrote. “I was only beginning to blow up and this was a big one! I rocked renowned Dublin Tailor Louis Copeland on the day. Midnight blue pinstripe. I paired the outfit with me grandas burgundy shoes, which I done an amazing job polishing on my Aer Lingus flight over. Zoom in, have a whiff. This same day I also signed a new contract with the UFC, under Lorenzo Fertitta. Lorenzo brought me into his office, myself and my manager Audie Attar, and placed a contract down in front of me with numbers I’d never seen before in my life! I looked over at Audie like, “you won’t be needed on this one mate” ? We both knew but play it cool we are still in the office hahaha! Wild! The first of our dealings together on some of the largest purse contracts in the history of combat fighting. Incredible! The moment was captured on one of the episodes of my 6 part series, which I had done for RTE. A real turning point in my career, both financially and professionally. The episode was titled “The Suite Life” as I was rocking around the Red Rock casino in absolute shock and awe. Trying to grasp what the fuck was actually going on Hahahaha! What a wild ride this has been. I am very grateful to be about to return and get to do what I love again. I look forward to the fresh test Dustin will bring since our first bout, while also showcasing my own incredibly deep cache of weaponry. Whatever tool is needed on the night will be pulled from the duffel.
I am also really excited about aiding Dustins charity “The Good Fight Foundation”, which through the donation, will build a gym/premise for disadvantaged youth in his childhood hometown. I truly love this, and pledge to match the donation on a premise in my own childhood hometown! Both spots with an ode to the upcoming bout.
Excellent stuff!
See you guys soon.”

Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier is not official yet — but it is close.

That’s according to UFC president Dana White who provided an update on the lightweight matchup expected to headline the UFC 257 pay-per-view event on January 23.

It was recently reported that both sides had come to terms on a deal on Monday. However, White revealed to ESPN that only Poirier has signed a bout agreement as of now. McGregor — who verbally agreed to the fight last month –was sent the bout agreement on Tuesday but has yet to sign it.

That said, White is hopeful it will be official soon.

“Jan. 23 on Fight Island, if everything goes according to plans,” White said. “There are a ton of if’s right now. I have to see where the world is at in the next couple of months.”

ESPN adds that the UFC had a hard time negotiating with Poirier to the point that they even considered a different opponent for McGregor. In the end, Poirier finally agreed to a deal.

If booked, it will mark McGregor’s return to action after over a year after previously returning in January this year where he needed just 40 seconds to TKO Donald Cerrone in the UFC 246 headliner.

Poirier, meanwhile, is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Dan Hooker in June. He previously faced McGregor in a featherweight bout back in 2014 but would suffer a first-round TKO defeat. “The Diamond” has since won 10 of his last 13 fights.

Do you think the fight will be made official soon? And who wins?

Former dual weight UFC champion Conor McGregor is now officially booked to face off against Dustin Poirier in a highly anticipated rematch according to a new report from MMA Fighting, which reads.

“The long rumored rematch between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier is a done deal.

“According to multiple sources speaking to MMA Fighting, both McGregor and Poirier have come to terms on a deal to book the fight for the upcoming UFC 257 card on Jan. 23 with the card expected to take place in Las Vegas.”

“While the fight has been in the works for several weeks, negotiations were still ongoing to strike a deal with the athletes. Late Monday night, it appears all sides have agreed.

“However, according to sources, McGregor would still prefer returning earlier and it appears he’s pushing for the Dec. 12 date now that Nunes vs Anderson has been scrapped for the main event at UFC 256.

Just yesterday the fight was thought to be in jeopardy with Ariel Helwani of ESPN suggesting Poirier had been holding up the fight with the same financial issues that led to him withdrawing from a fight with Tony Ferguson. The veteran MMA reporter also suggested that former interim lightweight champion Justin Gaethje may get the call if negotiations with ‘The Diamond’ drag on much longer.

Thankfully it hasn’t come to that and we now have an epic remach to look forward too. For those who don’t remember McGregor and Poirier previously squared off at UFC 178 in 2014. On that occasion ‘Notorious’ emerged victorious via first round TKO.

Since then the Irishman has gone on to capture UFC titles at featherweight and lightweight. As of late McGregor has not been regularly competing in MMA. The 32-year-old took time out of the sport to pursue a boxing bout with Floyd Mayweather. He has also retired on several occasions, including earlier this year when the UFC failed to get him a fight in a timely manner.

Poirier on the other hand has been very active and in great form too. Since jumping up to lightweight he has enjoyed great success. ‘The Diamond’ managed to capture UFC gold by beating Max Holloway in an interim title fight last year. He failed in his attempt to unfiy against Khabib Nurmagomedov but has since bounced back with an impressive five-round decision win over fellow 155lb contender, Dan Hooker.

Conor McGregor could fight Justin Gaethje rather than Dustin Poirier on January 23 according to a new report from ESPN.

McGregor and Poirier have verbally agreed to a rematch. UFC president Dana White also said the fight was a done deal. However, contracts are not yet signed, and ‘The Diamond’ made that much clear in a recent social media post directed at his employers.

According to Ariel Helwani’s sources, Poirier is the man believed to be holding the fight up and he could be replaced by Gaethje or another lightweight contender if ‘Notorious’ is down to fight whoever in early 2021.

“First, let’s establish the fact that the McGregor vs. Poirier fight isn’t a done deal, sources say. Nothing has been signed,” Helwani said.

“McGregor isn’t the issue, by the way. He’s in and eager to resume his career, I’m told. Now, if you’ve been paying attention, you won’t be surprised to hear that securing Poirier remains a hurdle. He’s the reason the Tony Ferguson-Poirier fight didn’t happen on Oct. 24, and he might be the reason the McGregor-Poirier fight doesn’t happen on Jan. 23. That’s not to say he’s doing anything wrong, per se, rather, he’s just trying to get a deal that he’s comfortable with and the two sides are still apart. That’s the fight biz.

“As a result, the UFC has said it would be willing to replace Poirier with Gaethje (or even another fighter), sources say. Of course, for this to happen, McGregor would have to be on board, and I’m not sure if he is, to be honest. That’s because Gaethje is coming off a loss and because of things Gaethje has said about McGregor (specifically about McGregor as a father) in the past.

“At this point, McGregor might be Poirier’s biggest ally. If McGregor says he’ll only fight Poirier, the UFC will have to work much harder to figure things out with Poirier. However, if McGregor says he’s open to other options because he just wants to fight, Poirier might be in trouble. Ultimately, I’ll say right now that they’ll figure things out with Poirier and the Jan. 23 fight will get done. That’s just a guess, because this can go sideways at any minute. But, because Poirier will realize this is too big an opportunity to pass up and because McGregor wants it, I’ll say it will get done.”
