UFC lightweight contender Dustin Poirier recently did an interview with ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, where the two covered numerous topics.

During the interview, Poirier reveled some interesting information about his career and where he wants it to go.

He first reveled that the UFC did offer him a title shot against Charles Oliveira at UFC 262, but he turned it down for the trilogy fight with McGregor instead.

Poirier also addressed McGregor and the whole donation situation.

“The whole thing with my tweet after I said that, my apology was more for me because I felt like I attached my foundation, something me and my wife have worked so hard to get where it’s at to something negative. We don’t want that dark cloud hanging above it. I still stand by it. I didn’t say anything untrue.”

Poirier then comments on McGregor’s recent donation to the Boys & Girls Club in Louisiana.

“Conor has donated 500K to the Boys & Girls Club and that is so incredible because at the end of the day helping the community, helping people in need was the mission and goal from the jump. At the end of the day charity wins. Conor didn’t donate it to my charity but it’s not my money, it’s the peoples money. It wasn’t a slap in the face, it was a high five.”

It is nice to see Poirier take the high road with his comments. With all the negativity surrounding this fight now, it is good to see him take it all in stride.

He did provide additional information on his preparation for the fight and even offered a prediction.

“I’m going to bust my ass and be prepared to go in their and make things happen.”

“I am going to stop Conor again. July 10th I am going to get my hand raised and finish Conor McGregor again.”

Dana White Says Poirier Doesn’t Want To Fight Ferguson, ‘The Diamond’ Responds

UFC president Dana White has accused Dustin Poirier of not wanting to fight fellow former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson at UFC 254.

‘The Diamond’ was expected to square off against Ferguson in an eagerly anticipated co-main event on October 24. However, the fight fell apart late last week as the UFC refused to meet Poirier’s financial demands for the fight.

Speaking to media at the DWCS 33 post-fight press conference on Tuesday White suggested Poirier didn’t want to fight Ferguson and therefore priced himself out during negotiations, he said.

“Listen, I like Dustin. I’m not going to sit up here and say anything negative about Dustin, he’s a great kid. I don’t know if it was he didn’t want to fight in Abu Dhabi or what his deal was – he didn’t want to fight.

“Listen, there’s a lot of different ways to turn down a fight. Negotiating yourself out of one is one of the ways you can do it. So for whatever reason, he didn’t want to take this fight. Only he knows that.”

Poirier was quick to deny those claims from White and reiterated his desire to fight Ferguson.

“I do want that fight,” Poirier wrote via text message to MMA Junkie. “Simple and plain, I want to fight Tony. I like the matchup.”

The UFC boss doesn’t seem to want to make the fight anymore. He told reporters yesterday that another opponent is currently on the table for Ferguson at UFC 254 and he sees no reason why El Cuccy wouldn’t be accepting it.

“I told you we’ve got a fight,” White said. “I don’t see Tony not accepting the fight.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Former Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler has got fans excited by hinting at a fight against former UFC interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier.

Chandler is currently a free agent after finishing up his deal with long-time employers Bellator. The 34-year-old picked up an impressive first round knockout win over former UFC champion Benson Henderson at Bellator 243 on August 7.

Since then Chandler has spoken with excitement about potentially signing for the UFC and fighting the likes of Conor McGregor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and Justin Gaethje. Chandler even suggested he would easily beat ‘Notorious’ and would do so inside two rounds, he said.

“As far as that fight goes, I finish Conor in under two, in my opinion. It’d be similar to, shades of (Nate) Diaz I. Wear him down, hit him with hard shots – hard, hard shots. Take every single one of his shots. He’s got that sneaky and strong and thick and hard left hand that he throws, and it’s straight. You avoid that, wear him down a little bit, make him see Jesus. Just put him out.”

The likelihood of that happening was improved over the weekend when UFC boss told reporters he would love to meet with Chandler to discuss and try to bring him on board.

“I would love to meet with him,” White said at the UFC 252 post-fight press conference. “That guy’s earned it, I would love to meet with him.”

‘Iron’ continues to hype up his potential UFC run and did so again on Wednesday by hinting at a fight with Poirier. Check out the Twitter post from Chandler below…

Poirier is currently looking for a fight after returning to the win column in epic fashion last time out. ‘The Diamond’ picked up a decision win over fellow lightweight contender Dan Hooker in one of the best fights 2020 has had to offer.

Dan Hooker Hopes To Fight Tony Ferguson After Dustin Poirier Defeat

Dan Hooker is determined to get straight back to fighting top lightweight contenders after suffering a unanimous decision loss against Dustin Poirier at UFC on ESPN 12 this past weekend. Hooker and Poirier threw down for five rounds in one of the best fights 2020 has had to offer. Ultimately ‘The Diamond’ began to dominate the bout in the later rounds and the judges scored the fight unanimously in his favour.

Speaking to Submission Radio post-fight Hooker expressed his belief that the only two logical opponents for his next fight are Charles Oliveira and Tony Ferguson, he said.

“They shuffled the rankings around a little bit. Felder dropped below Oliveira, and Dustin moved above Tony. So, it’s interesting times. So, obviously the two fights that make the most sense is Dustin verses Tony, and then me verses Oliveira. Those two fights make the most sense, right? But then, yeah, if Dustin wants to sit the rest of the year out and Tony wants to fight, well then I’m the next logical fight for Tony. So, I want to get back in there before the end of the year for sure. One hundred percent I’m gonna fight again before this year closes out. And if Tony wants to get back in there, then I think that fight makes a lot of sense, if I’m being honest.”

Hooker admits Ferguson is his preferred next opponent and believes he’ll be successful in his second shot at a top-five fighter in as many fights, he said.

“That’s best-case scenario for me, obviously is fighting Tony Ferguson. That’s number three, and I get another crack at number three. My first crack at number six was Barboza, and that went like shit. And then my second crack t number six was Al Iaquinta, and then I whooped him. So, I think I do better on my second time around the roundabout.”

The New Zealander also has a message for potential opponent Oliveira who he believes is getting carried away with recent call-outs of Poirier and Conor Mcgregor.

“I’ve got my eyes on who I want to fight next, and I think it’s either gonna be Tony or it’s gonna be Oliveira, and I think either one of those fights is another main event,” Hooker said. “But then, Oliveira, he’s getting carried away calling out Poirier and calling out Conor, and he’s beating around the bush, trying to say anyone expect me or Tony. He’s a funny guy. But yeah, I’ll have to wait and see, because obviously Tony makes way more sense for me. But if I have to go back and then solidify my place in the top five, I’m happy to do that. I just want to fight and I want to fight before the end of the year, and either of those two names makes sense for me.”

Who do you think Dan Hooker should face next?

Dustin Poirier is open to the idea of facing off against interim lightweight champion Justin Gaethje for a second time.

The two top 155lb fighters first squared off on April 14 2018 at UFC Glendale. Poirier emerged victorious in that fight knocking out Gaethje in the fourth round of their epic slugfest. ‘The Diamond’ is the last man to beat Gaethje who is currently riding an impressive four-fight win streak which includes a stoppage victory over Tony Ferguson at UFC 249.

Speaking to MMA Junkie Poirier expressed his interest in running it back with Gaethje because he knows a second fight will be just as good as the first, he said.

“I’m always open to it. It was ‘Fight of the Year,’ I thought, and I’m sure it would be again. I love watching him fight and, like I always say, anybody I’m a fan of watching fight, I would love to fight them because I know we’ll put some craziness on in there.”

Before that can happen ‘The Highlight’ will attempt to unify the lightweight division against undefeated champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. The fight will reportedly take place at UFC 253 in September and it’s one Poirier is still very much unsure about.

“It just depends how it unfolds and how Justin’s footwork is,” Poirier said. “If he can stay off the fence, I think he’s gonna give Khabib a lot of problems. Khabib’s gonna have a tough time taking him down in the open. But against the fence, I’m not sure.

“If Khabib gets him up (against) the fence and starts getting in on his legs, he might give Gaethje some trouble there and get him down and it’s gonna be hard to get back up. I know first hand.”

After nearly four-and-a-half years and 10 bouts, the UFC has released The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 14 winner Diego Brandao according to a report from Sherdog garnered from sources close to the situation.

The move comes in the wake of some disturbing out-of-the-cage trouble for Brandao, as he was recently arrested in Albuquerque, New Mexico, for allegedly threatening and pistol-whipping patrons at a local strip club. Prior to that disappointing incident, Brandao also tested positive for marijuana metabolites in an in-competition test for his UFC 195 loss to Brian Ortega, which earned him a temporary ban while he awaited his full punishment from the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC).

The promotion has not made an official announcement about the news, but if does indeed prove true, Brandao will leave the Octagon as one of the most failed realizations of talent in years. He absolutely steamrolled into the UFC by winning TUF 14 in 2011 as a member of Michael Bisping’s team, defeating current top featherweight Dennis Bermudez by submission in the Finale. He then parlayed the win into a highly-publicized feel-good story by buying his mother a house with the winnings.

But from then on, it was mixed results for Brandao, who lost his first official UFC bout aside from TUF to Darren Elkins. He then won three bouts in a row, but hit a big roadblock when he faced top-ranked competition like Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor. Two wins over Jimy Hettes and Katsunori Kikuno earned him his shot at prospect Ortega in January, but he lost to a “T-City” triangle choke after winning most of the fight up until the final round.

He put on exciting fights in each every bout whether he won or lost, so the personal issues with drugs and violence most likely were the main cause of his release if that does prove to be the case. And that’s a shame, because Diego Brandao one had arguably the most promise in MMA.
