Dwyane Johnson isn’t just transforming into an MMA fighter for his next film, he’s getting the full experience.

Johnson, otherwise known by WWE fans as The Rock, is in the middle of shooting The Smashing Machine, a movie based on the life of former two-time UFC heavyweight tournament champion Mark Kerr. Johnson, 52, has spent months preparing for the role with some intense all-out MMA training.

Unfortunately, as Johnson recently learned, that type of work is usually accompanied by some series injuries.

“Any time your film is called ‘The Smashing Machine,’ well, you’re going to get smashed up,” Johnson said in a video on Instagram. “… Looks like I have a cantaloupe right there on the bottom of my elbow. I got banged up pretty good today in our scenes.

“There might be some soft tissue damage in there. That’s a lot of fluid, we’ll see. I got to get it out of there first before I get any kind of MRI. But yeah, the pain feels pretty good. But all good. It is what it is, until it isn’t.”

Needless to say, The People’s Elbow has looked better.

Dwayne Johnson is no stranger to injuries on the job

Of course, being one of professional wrestling’s biggest stars for years, Dwayne Johnson is no stranger to getting banged up while on the job.

In 2013 during his WrestleMania main event against John Cena, ‘The Rock’ felt something pop in his leg a mere 15 minutes into their headliner and was left with no choice, but to finish the match with what turned out to be a badly torn adductor

A photo of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson filming his movie on former UFC fighter Mark Kerr has gone viral and the actor looks unrecognizable.

Kerr was known as ‘The Smashing Machine’ and was a massive star for the company early on. He won the UFC 14 heavyweight tournament and ended up starting his career with a 12-0 and one NC record.

However, Kerr dealt with substance abuse, and an HBO film was released in 2002 showing his struggles with it. In 2019, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson announced he would be making the documentary into a film, and he is starting to film the movie, and a photo from the shoot went viral showing Johnson portraying Mark Kerr.

Johnson doesn’t even look like himself in the photo, as he has hair and the makeup decorators did a phenomenal job covering up his tattoos and changing his face to look like Mark Kerr.

The film will reportedly be a no-holds-barred story of Mark Kerr at the peak of his career and explore his struggles with addiction.

The Rock set to star in new movie about UFC legend Mark Kerr

“Dwayne and Benny are singular talents, and their shared vision for Mark’s inspiring story is electrifying,” A24’s Noah Sacco said in a statement (via EW). “We are deeply honored to have their trust as collaborators in bringing this incredibly special project to life.”

No release date has been announced for the movie.

Mark Kerr’s MMA career

Mark Kerr finished his MMA career with a record of 15-11 and one NC, and last fought back in August of 2009 when he suffered a TKO loss to King Mo.

Kerr was a former NCAA D-1 college wrestler and a national champion. After his college career, he transitioned to MMA and made his debut in 1997 at World Vale Tudo Championship 3, which he won.

He then fought in the UFC four times before competing in Pride. In his career, Kerr has notable wins over Nobuhiko Takada, Branko Cikatic, and Dan Bobish among others.

Themba Gorimbo

Last month, fight fans were treated to a heartwarming moment when UFC prospect Themba Gorimbo received an unexpected visit from the most electrifying man in sports entertainment, The Rock.

In May, Themba Gorimbo earned his first win inside the Octagon, securing a unanimous decision victory over Takashi Soto at a Fight Night event. However, it was Gorimbo’s comments after the fight that got the world’s attention. During his post-fight interview, ‘The Answer’ revealed that he had little more than $7 in his bank account going into fight week and was often treated to meals by his MMA Masters teammates, including perennial welterweight contender Colby Covington.

The story quickly caught the attention of Dwayne Johnson, who knows all too well what it feels like to only have a few dollars in your pocket. The Rock reached out letting Gorimbo know that he was determined to help out and would be in touch. Two months later, Johnson did exactly that, surprising Themba Gorimbo at his gym before whisking him away to a house in Miami.

The house turned out to be Gorimbo’s new home.

Welcome home @TheAnswerMMA,” Johnson wrote on Twitter. “You and your family enjoy your new house brother. Lights are on. Bills are paid. Keep your “My Reason” list close, keep taking care of your people and I’m honored to play a very, very small role in your $7 bucks journey. $7 bucks. I’ve been there too. Got your back brother. Let’s get to work on that dream of becoming @ufc champion one day.”

With a place to call home, Themba Gorimbo can now focus on the two most important things in his life; family and becoming a UFC champion.

Currently, Gorimbo is 11-4 in his mixed martial arts career with a majority of his experience coming whilst fighting for regional promotions in Africa. ‘The Answer’ has also competed for UAE Warriors and Fury Fighting Championship ahead of his UFC debut. Gorimbo came up short in his Octagon debut, suffering a second-round guillotine choke to AJ Fletcher, but he quickly bounced back three months later to secure his first win in the UFC.

Dwayne Johnson knows a thing or two about the financial struggles that one UFC newcomer is facing.

Zimbabwe native Themba Gorimbo scored his first win inside the Octagon last month, besting Takashi Sato at a Fight Night event inside The APEX. However, it was Gorimbo’s comments following the fight that garnered the most attention. During his post-fight interview, ‘The Answer’ revealed that he went into the event with a mere $7 in his bank account. He was so low on funds entering fight week that welterweight contender Colby Covington helped him with meals in the days leading up to his sophomore appearance for the promotion.

“I’ve been broke,” Gorimbo said at his UFC Vegas 73 post-fight media scrum. “I came to America seven weeks ago without money. I only had enough money to fly, get to the airport to the gym, stayed at the gym, and then a friend sent me $200.

“It’s been a roller coaster. I didn’t have money, if you look at my bank account there’s $7 right now. In my bank account, there’s $7, and I have to enjoy this. I don’t know how much I’m getting paid. All I’ve been focused on for this fight was to get the win. The win was the most important thing, the money is the byproduct of getting the win.”

Relating to Gorimbo’s struggle, Dwayne Johnson reached out to ‘The Answer’ on Twitter and offered a helping hand to the African fighter.

“This is f’n crazy to see and brings back many emotions and memories,” Johnson wrote. “$7.49 in this fighter’s bank account. I once had $7 bucks too. I’ve been there on that grind. Got your back, brother. I’ll help. You got this. I’ll be in touch.”

Gorimbo was grateful for the shoutout and offer from Johnson. “Bless you brother. God’s work,” Gorimbo tweeted in response.

Dwayne Johnson Has Emerged as One of the World’s Biggest Stars

Despite coming from a long lineage of professional wrestling stars, Dwayne Johnson’s early days saw the Hollywood icon struggle to keep his head above water while pursuing a career in football. Playing in the Canadian Football League, Johnson routinely relied on team meetings to be fed and resorted to dumpster diving just to have a mattress to lie on at night. Things began to turn around in the 90s when Johnson decided to follow in the footsteps of his father Rocky Johnson and sign with the World Wrestling Federation. In a few short years, Johnson emerged as one of the most successful sports entertainers in the history of the game.

Today, Dwayne Johnson is known the world over as a bonafide Hollywood superstar, appearing in some of the biggest film franchises including The Fast and the Furious, G.I. Joe, and Jumanji. Johnson has also appeared in a plethora of action films earning comparisons to high-octane stars of the 80s, including Arnold Schwarzenegger or Sylvester Stallone.

In 2023, Dwayne Johnson dipped his toe back into the world of football relaunching the XFL as a majority owner of the NFL feeder league alongside his ex-wife and business partner Dany Garcia.

Nate Diaz

After submitting Tony Ferguson in their UFC 279 main event, Nate Diaz revealed that he is only interested in fighting The Rock.

Of course, Nate Diaz is referring to former professional wrestler turned actor and global superstar, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. On September 10th, the Stockton Samurai completed the final bout on his UFC contract with a fourth-round guillotine submission over fellow fan favorite Tony Ferguson. Originally Diaz was scheduled to face undefeated Chechnyan welterweight Khamzat Chimaev until ‘Borz’ stepped on the scale 7.5 pounds over the welterweight limit. As a result, the UFC scrambled to mix-and-match main card fighters in an attempt to save the event.

Many speculated that Nate Diaz would fight next in his newly established promotion Real Fight Inc. Another strong possibility is that the man from 209 could make his first appearance inside the squared circle against YouTuber turned professional boxer, Jake Paul. However, now it looks like Nate Diaz only has one man on his mind; the ‘jabroni-beating, pie eating, trailblazing, eyebrow-raising step off the break, put your foot on the gas, always ready to whoop some a**, people’s champ, The Rock.’

“I’m only going to fight the rock Otherwise I’m good,” tweeted Diaz.

Nate Diaz is Not a Fan of The Rock’s Shoes

Of course, the desire to fight The Rock is likely just Nate Diaz being Nate Diaz, but the Ultimate Fighter alum did have some words for the ‘People’s Champion’ after being required to wear The Rock’s shoes as part of a sponsorship deal between the UFC and Project Rock, Johnson’s clothing line with Under Armour.

“These shoes f*cking suck! Look at these shoes. They made me put this sh*t on,” said Diaz following an interview with Megan Olivi. “F*ck these shoes!”

While it would be foolish to hold your breath for a showdown between Nate Diaz and The Rock, fans are eagerly awaiting what will come next for the Stockton native following his departure from the UFC after 15 years with the organization.
