Multiple-time lightweight World Champion Eddie “The Underground King” Alvarez has made it very clear since he joined ONE Championship that he is on the hunt for the ONE Lightweight World Title.

Heading into his first bout with the promotion against Russia’s Timofey Nastyukhin at ONE: A NEW ERA, Alvarez takes the initial step towards his goal.

The pair of knockout artists are set to lock horns in the quarter-final round of the highly-anticipated ONE Lightweight World Grand Prix, which takes place 31 March at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan.

ONE Championship

While Alvarez has dominated the North American martial arts promotions, winning the World Title in each of the major organizations, “The Underground King” has his eyes set on the only title he has yet to capture.

“I have traveled the world in the last 15 years fighting the best guys I can get my hands on everywhere,” Alvarez said.

“I have won every single World Title from every major organization and ONE Championship is the only organization that I don’t have their World Title.”

Make no mistake about it. The 35-year-old journeyman is coming for the ONE Championship belt, and according to him, it’s only a matter of time until he is able to wrap it around his waist.

“I am coming here to win MY World Title,” Alvarez said.

“I have made some space on my shelf for the ONE Championship belt. I know the fighters are tough and this group understands the integrity of the sport and what it means to be a martial artist and I want to be a part of that.”

Taking on Nastyukhin however, Alvarez is faced with a very tough challenge against the most dangerous opponent ONE could find. This matchup was certainly no coincidence. In fact, Alvarez had repeatedly pleaded for ONE to give him the most difficult opponent ever for his first foray into the promotion.

“Like I said before, I’ll fight anyone, whoever the baddest, toughest, most dangerous guy that’s who I want,” Alvarez concluded.

“Take me to him and we will have a good fight.”

If Alvarez defeats Nastyukhin, he will be one step closer to reaching his goal. Waiting in the second round of the tournament is Hawaii’s Lowen Tynanes. Needless to say, it won’t be an easy road to the top and Alvarez would have it no other way.

Dana White responds to the criticism from former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez over interim titles.

This comes after Alvarez went on record earlier this week by expressing his belief that the UFC uses its interim title belts as a sick joke and are a serious problem that should be addressed.

The UFC President recently reacted to these comments while speaking with the media during UFC 235 fight week.

“Everybody who is up here today, whoever wins that belt, they move into the title fight, White said. “And I saw some talk the other day from Eddie Alvarez. I like Eddie, I have a great relationship with Eddie, but he was talking about how, you give interim titles so you don’t have to pay the guys so much or some weird comment like that.

“When you win the interim title belt, you’re looked at as the titleholder,” White said. “So when you go into a title fight, both guys share in the pay-per-view revenue. If you’re a contender without the interim title, you don’t. So, there’s nothing bad about holding an interim belt going into a title fight.”

Alvarez went 4-3 with one no contest during his time with the UFC after signing with the promotion in 2014. Now, he’s under contract with ONE Championship. He’s slated to be part of upcoming World Grand Prix Lightweight Tournament.

There have been a series of interim titles in the UFC in recent years.

Thankfully for former 155-pound champion Eddie Alvarez, this won’t be something he has to worry about anymore. Alvarez signed with ONE Championship recently and will be making his debut for the promotion at their “New Era” event on March 31st. Speaking to media recently, Alvarez said the sudden influx of interim titles in the UFC is a “serious problem” (via BJPenn.com):

“Look, this is a serious problem,” Alvarez said. “I’m laughin’, but it’s nothing to joke about. We’re all part of the problem, all of us are. When an interim title is given…

“And the media makes a big fuss of it and a fighter makes a big fuss of it and a fan makes a big fuss of it, an interim title has value. That’s the saddest thing that can happen in the sport. Because an interim title is given in replacement for money. ‘We don’t wanna give you money, but we’ll give you an interim title.

“We don’t wanna give you money, but we’ll give you a main event spot. We don’t wanna give you money, but we’ll give you that opponent you want. We’ll give you everything… But what you deserve. And that’s money.”

Two high-profile interim title fights are on the horizon. Israel Adesanya and Kelvin Gastelum will compete against one another for the interim UFC middleweight title. Also, UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway will jump up to 155 pounds. He’ll be fighting Dustin Poirier for an interim lightweight title.

Both fights will go down at the UFC 236 pay-per-view (PPV). The action goes down from the from the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia on April 13, 2019.
