Iuri Lapicus is set to take on one of the most accoladed fighters in MMA history, when he faces off against Eddie Alvarez at ONE on TNT I. The Moldavan prospect holds an impressive 14-1 record, having finished every opponent he has defeated.

Speaking with LowKick MMA’s Frank Bonada, Lapicus discussed his upcoming fight with Alvarez

“Everything’s run smoothly and now I’m super pumped” said Lapicus.”I can’t wait for the fight. I don’t have to tell you what Eddie Alvarez’s strengths are. He’s a living legend of MMA and a super well-rounded athlete. I don’t see weaknesses. His main strength is of course his experience, which is top level.

Lapicus clearly holds a huge amount of respect for Alvarez’s storied career. However, he is by no means allowing him to be star stuck against such an opponent. He stated the following:

“His journey as a martial artist is simply awesome. During his career he has won in nearly every promotion he has fought in. But I see the same Eddie Alvarez who fought in Bellator and the UFC. He’s the same opponent. At ONE FC, even if he has a defeat in his first match, I don’t see any difference. He’s a legend and a really tough opponent.”

Alvarez has recently made headlines by boldly stating that Lapicus simply does not have the experience to match him, especially in the later rounds. Lapicus had the following to say about Alvarez’s comments:

“He is totally right. The numbers speak by themselves. I don’t have his experience. But if they (One FC) chose me to fight him, it means that I’ve proven something. Even if I don’t have twenty years of career. So I have the potential to overcome this challenge. I can’t wait to show Eddie Alvarez my potential.”

Whilst Lapicus is completely focused on his fight with Alvarez, there is one fight that he wants to get at some point in his career.

“I don’t want to look past my match with Alvarez. But of course if I win I think I deserve another title opportunity. Even if it will be Christian Lee or Nastyukhin. If I win it will be a great statement. I want to face Christian Lee again because I want to delete the only defeat I have. I want to prove that is was just a coincidence.”

Lapicus will face off against Alvarez on April 7. as the co-main event of ONE on TNT I.

Eddie Alvarez Believes Winning ONE Belt Would Make Him The Lightweight GOAT

Former UFC and Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez truly believes that winning the ONE championship belt would make him the greatest lightweight in MMA history

Alvarez will return to the cage next week to face luri Lapicus with the winner next in line to fight for the ONE lightweight title. Alvarez, of course, is also the former UFC lightweight champion and the former Bellator lightweight champion, so winning a third belt in a major organization would make give him the extremely rare “triple crown” in MMA.

In an interview with TMZ Sports, Alvarez said that he believes winning the ONE lightweight title would give him the resume he needs to say he’s the greatest MMA lightweight ever.

“I mean, I think in my eyes I’d be the greatest lightweight that ever lived. It’s fine to be great for five years, it’s even good to be great for 10 years. But for two decades, to continue to fight champions all over the world. I’m not staying in one place, I’m not staying in one promotion. I’m going to all parts of the world and fighting every champion from every major promotion and becoming the champion on that platform. No one has done it, no one will ever do it. You have to be as crazy as I am,” Alvarez said.

“But I love this sport and it’s one fight at a time. It’s one fight at a time, and that’s how I’ve done it. As many belts as I collet and as many champions as I’ve defeated, it will be argued, but I’ll just tell people to check the scoreboard, you know what I mean? I don’t want to argue it. Check the scoreboard. Let’s accumulate the data and check the scoreboard. Then we’ll talk about who’s the greatest lightweight that ever lived.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

While Alvarez will certainly go down as one of the greatest lightweights to ever compete inside a cage, its hard to proclaim the goat with people like the undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov out there at 29-0.

Do you think Eddie Alvarez would be the GOAT Lightweight if he were to win the ONE Title?

EXCLUSIVE | Eddie Alvarez Picks Either Dustin Poirier Or Charles Oliveira To Win Lightweight Gold Next

ONE Championship lightweight contender, Eddie Alvarez has laid claim to gold across the likes of BodogFIGHT, Bellator, and the UFC across his eighteen-year, and has predicted that either previous foe, Dustin Poirier or the surging, Charles Oliveira will be the next lightweight kingpin of his old UFC stomping-ground.

Alvarez, who is currently preparing for a high-stakes, potential title-eliminator against former title challenger, Iuri Lapicus in April at ONE on TNT I — may earn the opportunity to challenge current kingpin Christian Lee for the lightweight championship with a victory.

Set to make his return for the first time in over eighteen-months, Alvarez got off the mark at the second time of trying under his new banner — stopping former two-time gold holder, Eduard Folayang via a first round submission. Debuting under the Chatri Sityodtong led promotion back in March of 2019, Alvarez dropped a devastating knockout to Timofey Nastyukin at ONE Championship: A New Era.

With current undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov remaining firm on his stance to retire following his October win over Justin Gaethje — Alvarez picked either Poirier or Oliveira to emerge strapped with gold after the reign of Nurmagomdov comes to an end, or at the turn of the new year.

I think Dustin’s (Poirier) probably gonna end up with the belt,” Alvarez said during a recent interview with LowKick MMA reporter, Jordan Ellis. “I think either Dustin or (Charles) Oliveira — either one of them.

Earning his lightweight championship shot during his UFC run, Alvarez took decision wins over former Strikeforce 155-pound titleholder, Gilbert Melendez, and former WEC and UFC lightweight best, Anthony Pettis. Battling then-champion, Rafael dos Anjos during International Fight Week back in the summer of 2016, Alvarez entered the fight as a considerable underdog — before clinching the title with a first-round barrage, stopping the Brazilian with strikes at the fence.

EXCLUSIVE | Eddie Alvarez: Christian Lee Isn’t Even The Best Lightweight In ONE

Eddie Alvarez has dismissed Christian Lee who has claimed he is the best lightweight fighter in MMA.

The 22-year-old won the ONE Championship lightweight belt when he beat Shinya Aoki in 2019.

Lee has since gone on to defend the strap twice and also won the ONE Championship Lightweight Grand Prix.

In recent weeks the youngster has been bold during his conversations with the media, declaring himself the best lightweight fighter in MMA.

“I don’t want to come off as cocky, but I do feel that I’m the best lightweight fighter in the entire world,” Lee told Asian MMA. “And that doesn’t mean just ONE Championship, that means every organization.”

Alvarez is a man who has won major titles in Bellator and the UFC.

‘The Underground King’ has shared the cage with the majority of the world’s best lightweight.

So who better to ask about Christian Lee and his place among the best lightweight fighters in MMA.

“I think he’s well-rounded. He’s good, but no. The best in the whole world? No, he’s not,” Alvarez told LowKickMMA. “He’s not even the best in ONE Championship. If they just let me fight him. He’ll understand that and so will the promotion.”

Alvarez believes he is just one fight away from earning a shot at ONE Championship gold.

The 37-year-old is set to face Iluri Lapicus on April 7 and expects winning this fight will be enough to cement his shot.

“I think that’s it (after I beat Lapicus). I beat the former champion, two-time champion Eduard Folayang. Iluri Lapicus, he’s number two. I believe he is ranked number two and then that’s it. I feel like that’s it,” Alvarez said. “I don’t feel the need to prove myself. I’ve beaten so many champions throughout my career. I don’t’ know what we are waiting on. I don’t know what I have to prove more. I can beat the best guys in the world. Put me in front of your champion and I’ll beat him.”

A few weeks after Alvarez fights the ONE Championship lightweight title will be on the line when Lee squares off against Timofey Nastyukhin – the last man to beat Alvarez, who believes this fight could go either way.

“I think Christian’s style. The way he comes forward. I think he has to just play that style and if he plays that style, I think he’ll do a lot better,” Alvarez said. “Forcing into a wrestling, grappling match is his best chance. I think if he stands up and tries to play that game I think Timofey is going to put him away. Christian has that really high pace right from the beginning, right from the gate, grappling at that sort of pace. He’s going to have to force that on Timofey and get him tired and take away that explosiveness. It could go either way. It’s a matter of who comes out more focused and who imposes their style the most. I wish them both the best of luck.

Do you agree with Eddie Alvarez? Is Christian Lee overestimating his position among elite level lightweight fighters?

EXCLUSIVE | Eddie Alvarez Praises Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Retirement Stance: Good For Him

AlvarezFor the longest time, the decorated Eddie Alvarez has maintained that he has the style to hand Khabib Nurmagomedov his first professional loss. For the longest time, the decorated Eddie Alvarez has maintained that he has the style to hand Khabib Nurmagomedov his first professional loss. Ultimately the pairing failed to ever come to fruition, with Khabib retiring from professional mixed martial arts while Alvarez now plys his trade in Singapore at ONE Championship.

Whilst we have never seen the two lightweight icons stand-opposite each other, Alvarez isn’t necessarily feeling sombre about that fact, wishing the undefeated UFC lightweight champion the best with his retirement.

Submitting common-foe, Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 in Abu Dhabi, UAE last October, Khabib cited the sad passing of his father, Abdulmanap as his reasoning for announcing a somewhat shocking retirement immediately after successfully unifying the lightweight titles.

In the months since, UFC president, Dana White has consistently and transparently attempted to convince Khabib to make a retirement ‘u-turn’ in a bid for one final fight. Prior to UFC 257 in January, footage emerged of White openly floating potential pay-per-view numbers with Khabib if he were to return in a bad-blooded rematch with Conor McGregor — prior to the Dubliner’s knockout loss to Dustin Poirier on ‘Fight Island’.

Speaking with LowKick MMA reporter, Jordan Ellis recently, Alvarez touched on the retirement stance of Khabib — claiming he was happy to see him ride off into the sunset with his wallet full and at “peace” with himself.

Good on him (Khabib Nurmagomedov) man, good on him,” Alvarez said. “This is a dangerous life. It’s a stressful life. You know, I’ve been fighting since I was 19-years-old, I’m 37(-years-old now). When someone could be at peace with themselves and make the money he has, and get out of the danger of the sport, and the stress of the sport — I think it makes for a really good, really good situation.

My hat’s off to him, you know,” Alvarez said. “Not many people leave this sport wealthy, healthy, and intact — and have peace, you know. I feel like he’s one of the few guys who are going to be able to do that.

Preparing for his own comeback, the Philidelphia favourite has yet to feature in active-competition since August of 2019 where he took a first round rear-naked choke victory over former two-time ONE Championship lightweight titleholder, Eduard Folayang.

Slated to return on April 7th. at ONE on TNT I — Alvarez matches up with one-time ONE Championship title challenger, Iuri Lapicus in a potential title-eliminator, beneath a rescheduled flyweight championship clash between incumbent gold holder, Adriano Martins and fellow former UFC titleholder, Demetrious Johnson.

An eighteen-year professional, Alvarez has struck gold across the UFC, Bellator, and BodogFIGHT — with the likes of Tatsuya Kawajiri, Toby Imada, Josh Neer, Roger Huerta, Pat Curran, Shinya Aoki, Patricky Freire, Michael Chandler, Gilbert Melendez, Anthony Pettis, Rafael dos Anjos, and the above mentioned Gaethje littered on a star-studded professional résumé.
