Ronda Rousey heaped praise on middleweight prospect Edmen Shahbazyan ahead of his upcoming fight.

Shahbazyan is one of the most exciting up and comers in the UFC with a 11-0 record and finishes in all but one of his career wins, having last knocked out Brad Tavares. He is currently set to face Derek Brunson in his first headliner at UFC Vegas 5 on August 1.

An impressive win over a perennial contender in Brunson would not further move Shahbazyan up the ranks, but possibly set him up against a potential top-five opponent in the middleweight division.

And for Rousey, who manages the 22-year-old as well as trained him with him in the past, Shahbazyan has always been a special talent.

“Little Eddie, he’s always been special. He’s always been called Neo. He’s the one,” Rousey said in a recent chat with UFC president Dana White (via BJ Penn). “He’s one of the first generation of kids who only did MMA. He was obsessed with MMA when I was training with the gym. He was actually like my throw-in dummy for my open workout (before the Liz Carmouche fight at UFC 157). He was 15 years old, he was like still like bigger than me. But like he was one of my training partners. He learned armbars by me. He got beat up by me.

“He was in the gym at a very pivotal time and he and his brother (Leon Shahbazyan) would just like show up with 10th Planet (Jiu-Jitsu) books and they were completely obsessed. I’ve never seen kids more obsessed with MMA and that was like the first generation of that. I came up in like judo and other things and MMA became a thing that everyone else had to adjust to when they were aways experts in something else.”

Based on his showings so far, the talent is there for all to see.

And if he keeps going at his current rate, Jon Jones may see his record of being the youngest UFC champion in history broken.

Do you think Shahbazyan will win this weekend? And what do you make of his future potential?

The UFC card on August 1 at the Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada has a new main event. Former bantamweight champion Holly Holm was expected to headline the event against surging contender Irene Alanda but that fight will now take place at a later date according to UFC boss Dana White.

Holm got back into the win column last time out dominating Raquel Pennington over three rounds. Prior to that, she came up short against the GOAT of women’s MMA, Amanda Nunes.

Aldana has picked up back-to-back wins in her past two UFC fights. The 32-year-old Mexican beat Vanessa Melo over three rounds before putting on a career best performance to knock out the previously unbeaten Ketlen Vieira.

The UFC president made the announcement during an Instagram live chat with retired bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey. He revealed Holm vs. Alanda was off but gave no specific reason as to why. White went on to announce perennial middleweight contender Derek Brunson would now headline the event alongside Edmen Shahbazyan who is managed by Rousey.

Mike Heck of MMA Fighting was on the Instagram live during White’s announcement and reported the news on social media, he wrote.

“Dana White just revealed that Holly Holm vs. Irene Aldana will be pushed to a later date, and that Derek Brunson vs. Edmen Shahbazyan is the new main event for Aug. 1 in Las Vegas.”

The official UFC Twitter account quickly followed on the announcement with a post to confirm the new main event for August 1 and provide a fight poster to get the fans excited about the middleweight match-up.

Brunson has picked up consecutive wins over Elias Theodorou and Ian Heinisch to re-establish himself as one to watch in the division. The American previously suffered back-to-back losses against Israel Adesanya and ‘Jacare’ Souza.

Shahbazyan is the rising star at 185lbs who currently boasts a perfect 11-0 record. At just 22 years old he already has four UFC wins to his name, three of which have come by stoppage inside one round.

Are you disappointed to see Holly Holm vs. Irene Aldana replaced as the August 1 main event?

Edmen Shahbazyan isn’t letting the COVID-19 pandemic stop his goal of becoming the youngest UFC champion.

Currently, that record is set by Jon Jones who achieved it when he was 23 years and eight months old. So, with Shahbazyan only turning 23 in July, he knows he still has time to break the record.

“It puts a little bit of time back on that,” Shahbazyan told MMA Junkie. “We have until next July to accomplish that goal, because 23 years and 8 months – and I’ll be 23 in November, and we have another eight months on top of that. But everything happens for a reason, so we’ll see what happens. But I’m hoping to fight soon when this whole thing is over with.”

Shahbazyan was expected to fight Derek Brunson on the UFC 248 card. Yet, Brunson pulled out due to an illness and they were quickly re-booked for UFC Portland. But, according to the undefeated contender, he wanted to stay on the 248 card and the promotion offered him a different opponent but that scrap never came to fruition.

“They offered another person and we said yeah to him, but I guess the other guy didn’t accept because it was too short of a notice,” Shahbazyan said. “And then they rescheduled it to the Portland date and we agreed on that, too, and then this whole corona(virus) thing happened.”

When Shahbazyan’s next fight will happen is uncertain at this time. But, a win over Brunson could get him a top-five opponent next. So, he knows the matchmaking has been in his favor and he’s closing in on his desire title shot.

“I think we’re progressing the right way and we’re taking the right approach as to who we’re fighting and when we’re fighting them,” Shahbazyan said. “I don’t want to rush anything. But I do want to set some high goals. I have set some high goals and I do want to accomplish them. But, no rush – (we’re) taking our time and we’re going to climb our way to the top.

“I think a win over (Brunson) definitely puts me in a position, maybe like close to top five. I think it’ll bump me up a couple of spots. So close to top five it’ll put me. But yeah, in my eyes, I’m No. 1 – so that’s how I’m looking at it.”

Do you think Edmen Shahbazyan will break Jon Jones’ record?

UFC middleweight prospect Edmen Shahbazyan is looking forward to big things should he defeat Derek Brunson.

Shahbazyan faces arguably his toughest opponent yet in Brunson at UFC 248 which takes place March 7 in Las Vegas. The unbeaten 22-year-old has already made a splash with the promotion following impressive finishes over Jack Marshman and Brad Tavares.

And he hopes to continue his run with another impressive performance against a veteran in Brunson:

“I think it’s a great matchup,” Shahbazyan told MMA Junkie. “I know he’s a veteran of the sport and he’s been a top contender fighting for a while, but I look forward to going out there and performing amazingly.”

The middleweight division is as stacked as ever with a number of top contenders such as Paulo Costa, Jared Cannonier and Darren Till to name a few.

Shahbazyan is looking to join that fray and potentially enter title contention with a win over Brunson:

“I just turned 22,” he added. “I’m improving every single day, and I love doing this. With a win over him, it puts me in a great spot in the division to soon fight for a title.

“I want to be the champ, and I’m going to do whatever it takes to get there one step at a time.”

It is likely that Shahbazyan will need a few more wins before he can think of a title shot. However, he is certainly going in the right direction.

What do you think of Shahbazyan’s future in the middleweight division?
