Following Ronda Rousey’s devastating 48-second TKO loss to Amanda Nunes in the main event of December 30’s UFC 207 from Las Vegas, most (if not close to all) MMA fans thought if Rousey was ever to step back into a MMA cage, she would have to ditch her longtime coach Edmond Tarverdyan in order to find anything closely resembling success.

Many also echoed that sentiment for Rousey’s boyfriend, UFC heavyweight Travis Browne, who had lost four out of his last six previous bouts under Tarverdyan’s tutelage, with his only two wins coming over two fighters who are no longer in the UFC. His fans – or at least those that were left – were happy to see news arrive that Browne was headed to Blackhouse MMA towards the end of January.

But Browne was quick to refute the notion Tarverdyan was no longer in his corner, issuing a lengthy response suggesting people just didn’t get it. Most expected Tarverdyan, for better or worse, to be in “Hapa’s” corner for his pivotal bout against surging contender Derrick Lewis in the main event of this Sunday’s (Feb. 19, 2017) UFC Fight Night 105 from Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, but apparently that’s not the case, either.

Tarverdyan will not corner Browne in the must-win fight according to MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn, who clarified it would be kickboxing champion and WSOF President Ray Sefo, along with wrestling coach Ricky Lundell, in Browne’s corner:

A strange set of circumstances to be certain, as it appeared to be nothing more than a foregone conclusion that Browne had left the troubled Tarverdyan before backing him up significantly, and now word arrives he won’t use services.

Clearly something is amiss in the Glendale Fighting Club, something that’s not surprising given the fact that Tarverdyan is facing a lengthy list of legal troubles that could see the gym being foreclosed upon.

As for Browne, he’s dangerously close to losing his spot on the UFC roster, and most would blame Tarverdyan for that mess considering the powerful slugger was one of the heavyweight division’s top fighters while under the guidance of Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn.

Many will view Browne’s corner change as an overwhelmingly positive one. Will it lead to positive results against the ultra-dangerous Lewis this weekend?

Head Movement!

It looks as though Glendale Fighting Club is still up and running. Contrary to recent reports, UFC heavyweight Travis Browne is still a member too. After the UFC 207 frenzy died down, many questions still remained about coach Edmond Tarverdyan. Firstly, the polarizing coach was again the subject of massive debate regarding his credentials. Showing no improvement in her stand up, Ronda Rousey crumbled quickly against Amanda Nunes. Just 48 seconds in to the first round and ‘Rowdy’ had taken all she could handle.

Then came the deadline for a settlement agreement to the tune of $160K. Coach Edmond’s bankruptcy/fraud case had to be sorted by last month or the gym could be sold by the pursuing party. With Dana White recently saying Rousey is pretty much done fighting, reports about ‘Hapa’ joining a different gym circulated. Apparently those reports were inaccurate, and Browne recently came to the defense of his coach. Speaking during a podcast appearance, ‘Hapa’ confirmed coach Edmond will be in his corner against Derrick Lewis in Halifax:

“Don’t Judge Edmond”

Heading in to his February 19 showdown with ‘Black Beast,’ Browne desperately needs a win. Riding a two-fight losing skid, Browne’s fortunes have been on the downswing since joining Glendale. This is not a reflection of Tarverdyan, says Browne, who believes people are singling his coach out:

“I think it’s easy to judge from the outside. Anybody that I’ve ever had in camp, to work with me as a training partner, they are always like, ‘Edmond knows what he’s talking about.’ He has a great fight IQ and he has great coaching. It’s about the athletes going out there and performing. Every coach has lost. Every champion, with the exclusion of Jon Jones, has lost. Why didn’t the community come down on those coaches? Where was everybody then? Why are you singling him out? It isn’t fair.”

Browne Blames Himself

“Speaking for myself, I went to Edmond to work specifically on footwork and my hands. Now it was up to me, during my fights, to work on my kicks, and grappling, and stuff like that. That was just something that I, for whatever reason, wasn’t at the front of my mind. I think now after I’ve had a tough year, after a year like this, I need to sit back. I’ve developed these skills, how do I incorporate them now into like the full scope of what I’m able to do.”

“What was happening is that I go to a certain point that was pretty high in the rankings based solely off of athletic ability. Really I didn’t have any coach that was like, ‘yes, that’s my student.’ I got a lot of my coaching from a lot of my training partners. They are high-level training partners, you had Phil Davis, Brandon Vera, Jon Jones, even Andrei Arlovski, guys who were in the gym. Yes, I had coaches, they were good coaches, I’m not saying they were bad coaches, but I never really learned how to fight technically. So I felt I got to a certain spot in my career based on my athletic ability, and I wanted to learn specifics of the sport.”

“I went to Edmond and started learning specifics of the sport, but then, in my own mind, I look back now, I started to depend too much on my skill level and not use my athletic ability. So now I’m sitting here after the Werdum fight thinking, ‘What the hell is going on?’ I need to go back to being athletic as I’m going to be but also using the skill set that I’ve learned over the years and incorporating it all.”

At Stake

Facing a surging heavyweight prospect in Lewis, Browne will need to be on top form. At stake is possibly his UFC contract. ‘Hapa’ vs. ‘Black Beast’ is the main event of UFC Fight Night 105, and which version of Travis Browne that shows up will prove pivotal to the result.

Report: Travis Browne Ditches Edmond Tarverdyan’s Gym in Favor of Black House

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1qJMyCPZ4Q

Travis Browne is undergoing a change of scenery.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight appears to have left Edmond Tarverdyan’s Glendale Fighting Club for Black House. UFC Insiders reported the news.

“Hapa’s” girlfriend and once dominant women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey is currently training at Tarverdyan’s gym. There’s been no word on if she’ll follow Browne to Black House should she decide to continue fighting.

Tarverdyan has been under a heavy amount of scrutiny. Following Rousey’s blowout loss to Holly Holm at UFC 193, many criticized her stand-up and blamed Tarverdyan’s coaching. Even “Rowdy’s” mother urged her daughter to leave Glendale Fighting Club.

Things didn’t get much better for Tarverdyan as he was suspended by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) for not disclosing his prior arrest back in 2010. He was also hit with a $5,000 fine. The suspension lasted three months.

Now more than ever, Tarverdyan is being blasted by fans. Amanda Nunes destroyed Rousey in 48 seconds and it didn’t look like “Rowdy” made any improvements to her stand-up. Her lack of head movement, defense and awkward footwork were apparent.

Browne will be facing Derrick Lewis at UFC 208. The event will be held inside the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY on Feb. 11.

Travis Browne Leaves Edmond Tarverdyan For Black House

Travis Browne has finally left Edmond Tarverdyan’s Glendale Fighting Club. Heading into his pivotal UFC 208 match-up with noted power slugger Derrick “The Black Beast” Lewis, Browne has reportedly moved his training camp to Black House MMA to get a fresh start in 2017.

A tweet surfaced from UFC Insiders confirming “Hapa’s” move:

That should be music to the ears of Browne’s fans, as the onetime-promising contender has dropped four out of last six bouts with victories over Brendan Schaub and Matt Mitrione, who are now retired and fighting in Bellator, respectively – and the win over Mitrione came at least partly due to a controversial eye poke.

Prior to the downward trend, Browne had notched three straight huge knockout victories, stopping John Barnett, Alistair Overeem, and Gabriel Gonzaga while earning “Knockout of the Night” bonus for each bout as a member of Greg Jackson’s respected Albuquerque camp. Obviously “Hapa’s” success took a steep downward trend when he moved to Los Angeles and began training at GFC under Edmond Tarverdyan, the coach who is undoubtedly under the most heat in all of MMA right now.

But that heat isn’t for anything he’s done to Browne’s career, as Tarverdyan has clearly been one of the main reasons for former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey’s steep decline in her two recent knockout losses to Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes, the latter coming in a shocking and sobering 48 seconds at last December’s UFC 207.

As the collective MMA world cries out for Rousey to leave Tarverdyan and reinvent herself, this move from her boyfriend could be a bigger sign in terms of “Rowdy” finally being completely honest with herself.

That remains to be seen, however. In the meantime, Browne will be preparing at a gym more focused on the complete, overall aspects of MMA as he prepares for a must-win bout against the ultra-dangerous Lewis.

Will his infamous girlfriend soon follow suit?

Ronda Rousey’s loss at UFC 207 was not the end of coach Edmond’s worries…

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey suffered another crushing loss at UFC 207. Her massively anticipated return came amid media frenzy, albeit without the sound of Rousey’s voice. Her choice to black out the press led to equally as much speculation and debate as if she had chosen to speak. Inevitably it all meant little on fight night, as Amanda Nunes took the ex-champ by storm. Retaining her belt with a 48-second squash match, Nunes put Rousey’s combat future in the balance again.

Obviously questions were asked, most of them focused on ‘Rowdy’ and her apparent lack of improvement. Displaying eerily similar faults to the Holly Holm fight, Rousey’s 411 days away had clearly been spent in the wrong company. Coach Edmond Tarverdyan came under fire, his training methods in particular, but also his somewhat questionable past. His sketchy file for bankruptcy before the Holm fight raised eyebrows, and now it’s come to a head.

Deadline

After Taverdyan claimed his annual income was $0, and he owned only $3K worth of assets, it was clear something was going on. Turns out old Eddie transferred the rights and interest in Glendale Fighting Club to his wife, something the trustee in Tarverdyan’s bankruptcy case saw right through. As per BloodyElbow.com, Tarverdyan and wife have until Sunday to pay the $160K settlement or they’ll lose the gym.

The Trustee contends, among other things, that: (1) the Transfer is avoidable as a fraudulent transfer under the Bankruptcy Code and California law and/or as a preferential transfer under the Bankruptcy Code; and (2) all of the right, title and interest in GFC is community property that is property of the estate. [Tarverdyan] and Avetisyan dispute these contentions.

GFC Could Be Sold

According to the settlement, Tarverdyan and Avetisyan have until Jan. 15 to pay the $160,000 in full. Should they fail to do so, the rights and title to GFC and its assets will be deemed community property and the trustee will have the right to sell GFC and its assets and retain the proceeds for the estate and the creditors.

Perhaps this could be the key to Ronda Rousey’s successful comeback. Should Edmond Tarverdyan lose Glendale Fighting Club, maybe ‘Rowdy’ will find a new gym. At the minimum, that would certainly answer questions about Tarverdyan’s ability to coach. As for the allegations of fraud and tax evasion, you be the judge.

Video: Ronda Rousey’s Corner Devastated in ‘UFC 207: Thrill and Agony’

Watch the stunned reaction of Ronda Rousey’s corner and the tears of joy in new bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt in the post-UFC 207 release.

2016 may not have been considered the best year in the franchise’s history, but it certainly ended with a bang. “Rowdy” was beaten to a pulp by the extraordinary power of 135lb champion Amanda Nunes, while “No Love” put on an unbelievable display to dethrone Dominick Cruz, and end a winning streak lasting almost 10 years.

In the recent release, the contrast of celebration and desolation work emphatically on film.  The defending champion [Nunes] celebrates with joy as her family hug and cheer in the crowd. “The Lioness” then storms back stage after her win, telling all that ‘Ronda Rousey is done’, before ceremoniously popping a bottle of champagne.  Opposingly, Rousey’s trainer [Edmond Tarverdyan] and her mother and sisters struggle to contain themselves.

The video also highlights Garbrandt’s reactions to his title win, with tears all round as his Alpha Male teammates (including Urijah Faber) take in the magnificence of his victory.
