Edson Barboza has called his shot after impressively dispatching of Shane Burgos at UFC 262 this past weekend.

The Brazilian knockout artist battered Brugos over two rounds before landing a shot that caused one of the craziest knockouts you’re ever likely to see in the third and final frame.

Barboza stretched his winning streak to two at featherweight although he would argue he should boast a perfect 3-0 record after falling to a close and controversial loss against Dan Ige in his 145lb debut. He’s now looking to keep his impressive form going against one of the top featherweight fighters.

“You can see the top five guys: Calvin Kattar, Yair Rodriguez, Zabit (Magomedsharipov), ‘Korean (Zombie)’, Max Holloway,” Barboza told MMA Junkie. “That’s a main event. That’s a pay-per-view fight, for sure. UFC always gives me a chance to fight the best guys at 155. I hope they give me the chance to fight the best guys at 145.”

A potential fight with the former champion, Max Holloway, is of particular interest to Barboza.

“Make a fight me and Holloway, five rounds, that would be crazy,” Barboza said. “That would be (one where) 100 percent people would love this fight. Me against Kattar, me against Rodriguez. I really believe I really deserve a top-five guy because my last two fights – I beat Ige, (who) was a top 10. Now I beat Burgos, he’s a top 10. I believe all my history with my performances, I really deserve a top-five next.”

Barboza doesn’t want to sit out for too long and has already earmarked a date for his next bout.

“I think I saw a card on the Aug. 27 or something like that,” Barboza said. “That’s going to be perfect. Rest this week, back to training next week. End of August going to be perfect to get back to fight.”

At UFC 262, Shane Burgos and Edson Barboza were having an amazing battle to open up the main card. In the third round, Barboza would hit Burgos with a clean right hand that he seemed to just brush off. About four seconds later, Burgos’ legs gave out, sending him backwards to the canvas. Barboza would then go and finish him about one minute into the third round. The delayed reaction was baffling and many suggested that Burgos was just to tough for his own good. Some of those people would appear to be right.

Dr. David Abbasi is a ringside physician and orthopedic surgeon who breaks down sports injuries on his YouTube channel. Following Saturday night, Dr. Abbasi posted a video explaining how the brain works during a KO and why Burgos’ is so strange. (H/T MMAFighting.com)

“First of all, anything that involves the brain is going to be complicated…,” Dr. Abbasi said. “The brain is enclosed within the skull and is surrounded by a layer of protective fluid called cerebrospinal fluid which basically acts to cushion and protect the brain when the head is shook so the brain is not swashing around on the inside of the head. Now with a knockout type blow like the one we saw Edson Barboza deliver, what can happen is that any sudden movements of the skull can cause the brain to knock around on the inside of the skull. When that happens you get a dump of increased electrical activity and imbalances of the electrical activity can sometimes cause what we consider a knockout, or basically shut down of the central nervous system and the body.”

“In this specific instance, we see a delayed reaction of that. Being a ringside physician, what we think happens is basically a clash of a person’s will power versus scientific ability to continue a fight. Almost like if you were to imagine someone at the end of a triathlon you see those people try to run or crawl across the finish line but their body physically cannot do it. I think there’s a component of that that we can consider was happening.”

Dr. Abbasi also suggests that Burgos’ head movement after absorbing the strike had something to do with it too.

“After he gets hit by the punch by Edson Barboza, at first he acts normally and actually we see him do his normal type of head movement back and forth which in my opinion probably made things worse because his brain was probably on the verge of electrical activity where it was going to shut down or have a knockout but it was just on that border”

“I think the addition of that head movement certainly did not help things. It could have increased the severity of that blow that Edson Barboza delivered. But I think that scientifically, probably what’s going on it was probably an intersection of extremely tough will power meeting the scientific verge of a knockout with the abnormal electrical activity.”

Even Edson Barboza didn’t understand his knockout over Shane Burgos.

Barboza collided with Burgos in a featherweight war that delivered as expected in the UFC 262 main card opener last night. However, the action came to an end in the third round when Barboza connected with a right hand.

Burgos seemed to have eaten it only to have a delayed reaction as he stumbled backwards and collapsed with Barboza finishing the fight soon after.

It was definitely one of the most unusual and bizarre finishes to a fight and even more so for Barboza.

“I really don’t understand,” Barboza said at the post-fight news conference (via MMA Junkie). “I know I connected a good one because I felt it – but I felt like he shook a little bit and something happened and he went again and then went down.

“So I was like, ‘OK, let’s go finish him.’ I need to watch it because I really don’t know what happened. I connected with the right overhand, but I don’t remember.”

Regardless of the finish, it puts Barboza on a two-fight winning streak while he considers himself to be on a three-fight streak after his contentious split decision defeat to Dan Ige.

And given the rank of Burgos, the Brazilian will surely enter the top 10 now as he has his eye on the featherweight title.

“I think I’m on the way – I’m on the way to a title shot,” Barboza added. “I have 24 fights in the UFC. I feel better and better. I truly believe I won the last three fights at 145. Dan Ige is a top 10. Burgos is a top 10. I’m really on the way to get the title shot.”

Talk about a bizarre ending to a fight. Edson Barboza improves to 2-1 at the featherweight limit, stopping the #9 ranked, Shane Burgos with a hugely unique one-punch knockout of the Bronx native, who appeared to display a dalyed reaction following the fight ending blow.

Trading in the pocket from the opening round onwards, Barboza and Burgos fired off notable counters against each others, as both attempted to find their mark with punishing, numerous calf kick attempts.

More than likely taking the first two rounds on the majority of judges’ scorecards, Barboza made sure those cards weren’t needed come the end of the constest, launching massive, swift overhand right on Burgos’ chin inside the opening minute of the final frame.

Appearing to first absorb the shot and begin to plod forward, Burgos’ legs then began to buckle as he reverted backward, collided with the Octagon fence, unconcious and falling face-first to the canvas in one of the most bizarre knockouts the Octagon has ever hosted.

Below, catch the highlights from Barboza and Burgos’ Fight of the Night display.
