UFC President Dana White calls the promotions recent ESPN+ pay-per-view deal ‘the right move at the right time’.

The organization also extended its broadcast deal with ESPN, keeping the relationship together until 2025. But the biggest news of the day was the announcement that U.S. pay-per-view customers will only be able to find events on ESPN+.

“This was the right move at the right time,” White said (h/t MMAJunkie). “ESPN has been an incredible partner in just a short amount of time. Everything works together.”

The announcement has already been met with skepticism. However, White believes that everyone will be better off and that fans especially should be thrilled to have all of the UFC’s content in one place (so much for Fight Pass).

“We’re both aligned with our goals and what we want to do, so it’s going to be so much better for the fans,” White said. “Obviously in the beginning change is weird, everybody hates change, but once we get dialed in, it’s going to be amazing.”

Still, White is used to doubters. After all he has been in this game making controversial decisions for the last two decades. Surprisingly enough, many of his seemingly far fetched ideas work.

“When will you stop doubting me?” White said. “It’s been (expletive) 20 years now. When will you stop doubting me?”

If you haven’t signed up for ESPN+ after the UFC’s recent broadcast deal with the sports network juggernaut, get ready to pony up.

ESPN has announced that ESPN+ will serve as the exclusive home for UFC pay-per-view (PPV) events moving forward. This means, now, the only way to watch UFC PPVs will be by purchasing them through ESPN+. The deal will last through 2025, extending the UFC and ESPN’s relationship with one another by two years.

The deal kicks into effect on the UFC’s next PPV event, UFC 236. The show goes down on April 13th from State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The card features two interim UFC title fights. The first being for an interim 185-pound title between Israel Adesanya and Kelvin Gastelum.

Also, UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway faces Dustin Poirier for the interim 155-pound strap. UFC PPVs sold on ESPN+ will feature all main card fights. Prelims for UFC PPVs will continue to air on broadcast television as agreed upon under the initial deal signed between the two companies.

The UFC and ESPN signed a five-year broadcast deal recently, which includes 30 UFC Fight Night events a year. 10 main cards will air on ESPN, with the other 20 airing on ESPN+.

The Professional Fighters League (PFL) has announced a multi-year broadcast deal with ESPN.

This is an interesting move for the sports media juggernaut, who recently obtained the broadcast rights to the UFC. PFL made the announcement today (Mon. February 25, 2019) that their events would now air on ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN+. Also, PFL has struck a similar deal with TSN to air their cards in Canada.

PFL and ESPN’s new broadcast deal kicks off on Thursdays in May with regular season events airing through August. Then, three playoff cards will air in October before season finals on New Year’s Eve. The finals will air on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes.

ESPN executive vice president of programming Burke Magnus had this to say in an official statement:

“We are pleased to add the PFL to our combat sports roster. This unique and innovative competition structure provides MMA fans with a great option to see some of the best fights and content in the sport.

“ESPN is the home of combat sports, and we look forward to delivering thrilling live PFL events and powerful storytelling to fans, across all platforms.”

PFL CEO Peter Murray also commented:

“We are thrilled to bring the PFL to ESPN, the undisputed leader in sports. ESPN is a ground-breaking pioneer that has fundamentally changed the way fans consume sports, and we at the PFL are reimagining MMA for fans and fighters.”
