It’s been more than six months since Leon Edwards successfully defended the welterweight world title against ex-champion Kamaru Usman at UFC 286.

Not long after Edwards had dispatched the ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ in their trilogy bout, UFC CEO Dana White revealed that outspoken division standout Colby Covington would be the next man to challenge ‘Rocky’ for the 170-pound crown. Half a year later, the bout still has not happened nor has it even been announced. Covington has been plenty talkative, placing most of the blame on Leon Edwards for the delay, but the champ’s brother offered some insight into why we’ve gotten no official word regarding the welterweight title tilt.

In a recent interview with The Daily Star, Leon Edwards’ brother, Fabian Edwards, revealed that much of the delay is due to negotiations, including where the fight will take place.

“Fans keep asking but he’s ready to go, he’s ready to get in there it’s just about the negotiations,” Fabian Edwards said. “It’s about location and so many things. At the moment the focus is on me, and I’m in the cage but he’s training and ready. It’s great having him there if we need to lean on each other, having a champion that’s been there and done it.”

Leon Edwards May Not Be the Only World Champion in the Family Come Bellator 299

While Leon Edwards is still trying to work out the details surrounding his next title defense, Fabian Edwards will look to claim his first championship as he steps into the main event spotlight at Bellator 299 on September 23. ‘The Assassin’ is set to square off with the promotion’s reigning middleweight titleholder Johnny Eblen when the promotion returns to Dublin.

Fabian Edwards goes into the bout riding an impressive three-fight win streak, scoring wins over Lyoto Machida, Charlie Ward, and Gegard Mousasi.

Perhaps once ‘The Assassin’ handles his business in the Emerald Isle, his UFC title-toting brother will be ready to book his own highly anticipated return to the Octagon.

Fabian Edwards, the #2 ranked middleweight contender under the Bellator MMA banner and brother of undisputed UFC welterweight champion, Leon Edwards maintains his undefeated record this year under the scrutiny of Scott Coker — handing Charlie Ward, the teammate of former two-weight UFC best, Conor McGregor a unanimous decision loss.

Co-headlining Bellator 287 in Milan, Italy — Fabian Edwards, a staple of Team Renagade BJJ & MMA in Birmingham, got off to a bright start against Straight Blast Gym product, Ward, rocking the UFC alum with a massive left high kick — reminiscent of a high kick his brother Leon landed to defeat Kamaru Usman earlier this summer.

Stunning the always-competitive Ward with a series of elbows in a tight exchange, Edwards shared some unpleasantries with Portlaoise native, Ward on the ground in the final minute of the last round, as the latter accused Edwards of holding onto a decision win — as he failed to land another finish off the back of an earlier year knockout win over former UFC light heavyweight champion, Lyoto Machida.

Less than happy with his performance against Ward, Edwards, who had likely earned himself a middleweight title shot against division kingpin, Johnny Elben next, distanced himself from a fight — focusing on a self-labelled lacklustre display.

UFC welterweight contender Leon Edwards believes that there’s one element of Bellator MMA that makes the promotion “weird.”

While the Edwards family’s focus will now mostly be on Leon and his chance to capture undisputed UFC gold at UFC 278 in August, last month, the attention was on the exploits of Fabian.

While Leon has fought his way towards the top inside the Octagon, Fabian plies his trade in the Bellator cage, where he’s earned the #3 spot in the welterweight rankings. He secured that place by snapping a two-fight skid at Bellator 281.

In front of a home crowd inside London’s OVO Wembley Arena, Fabian Edwards delivered a frightening knockout of MMA legend Lyoto Machida, rocking him with a vicious elbow before sending the former UFC champion to sleep with some grimace-worthy ground-and-pound.

In the celebratory scenes, Leon Edwards rushed into the cage ecstatic at his brother’s performance. And during a recent appearance on The MMA Hour, “Rocky” looked back on the stoppage, branding Fabian’s handiwork as “spectacular.”

“You see that finish, you see that finish? Lovely. The elbows!” Edwards said. “The finish was brilliant. He’s one of those fighters, where he needed the win, ’cause he was coming off two losses. So, it was spectacular.”

Fabian Edwards is set for the next test on his road to the title in October when he heads to Italy for Bellator Milan. But while he’s undoubtedly earned a big-name opponent, Leon doesn’t believe it’s guaranteed for his sibling given the “weird” nature of Bellator and its matchmaking.

“He’s fighting October… Milan. There’s a card in Italy… For sure (he’s earned a big name),” said Edwards. “If it was me, though, if I was him, I’m saying to him, get like, two good names, top-15 guys, just to get the momentum back, and then go to a title shot. Because Bellator is weird, it’s like, a mad organization.

“One minute you’re fighting Lyoto Machida, the next minute you’re fighting some guy from the corner shop,” added Edwards with a laugh. “There’s no system to it. It’s a weird promotion. They do fantastic in the UK. It’s good for UK fighters what they’re doing in Bellator.”

While an opponent is yet to be determined, it seems set that Fabian Edwards will enter the cage again before the year is out, this time on foreign soil. With Leon looking ahead to a trip to Utah for his title challenge against Kamaru Usman, it looks likely to be a period full of travel for the Edwards’.

Fabian Edwards has knocked former UFC champion Lyoto Machida unconscious in the first round of the co-main event of Bellator 281.

Fabian Edwards, the brother of UFC welterweight contender Leon Edwards, picked up the biggest win of his career to date. The two men began somewhat tentatively, trading leg kicks back and forth. However, the entire momentum of the fight changed when they clinched. Edwards landed a brutal elbow on the break that had ‘The Dragon’ reeling.

From that point on, Edwards continued to lay it on, landing three massive left hands to send the former UFC champ crumbling to the canvas. Several follow-up shots ensured Machida would not be making it back to his feet anytime soon.
