It’s safe to say former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum is ecstatic to be competing again.

Werdum returns to action for the first time in over two years when he faces Aleksei Oleinik on the prelims of UFC 249 on May 9 in Jacksonville, Florida. The Brazilian has been away ever since failing a drug test in 2018 which resulted in a two-year suspension.

However, he is eligible to compete again and despite not being on the main card, he remains happy and is now looking to make up for lost time.

“I was going to fight at UFC 250, in Brazil. I know lots of people were looking at that date because UFC 249 got cancelled, but now it’s back on,” Werdum told Combate in a recent interview (via Bloody Elbow). “They chose me and I was very happy. Although I’m on the prelims, I don’t really care about that. I’d like to be on the main card, but being able to fight again after two years because a contamination I was unable to prove, it just makes me want to fight. It doesn’t matter where. If it’s the first of the night, I’m happy, because I’ll fight and then leave.

“I’m happy to be on the card, it’s pretty important, there will only be great fights. I know that if I were in Brazil, I’d be on the main card, but being able to fight is the most important thing. I have two fights left in the UFC, I want to be done with that soon so I can make up for the years I’ve been away. I want to be more active so I have to fight for five more years. I think I’ll fight for one or two years more, but you never really know.”

Werdum is based in Big Bear, Colorado, and is currently self-isolating along with his family. And he only plans on being in Jacksonville for three days as he looks to avoid contracting the COVID-19 virus.

“It’s all set. We’re leaving on May 7, we don’t even have to be there a week before because there’ll be no media,” he said. “I arrive on the 7th and leave on the 10th. I’ll go back to Big Bear, where I’ll be with my family. It was the best decision because I was able to train at an altitude, which makes a big difference. I run up the mountains, I train online with Rafael Cordeiro, Cobrinha and Renato Babalu has been helping, too. It reminds me of Mexico, when I fought Cain Velasquez and Mark Hunt with altitude. I feel like I’m physically and mentally prepared because of the experience I have. Everything will turn out fine.”

Werdum’s last outing was a knockout defeat to Alexander Volkov at UFC London back in March 2018.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum will make his long-awaited Octagon return against Alexey Oleynik.

A report from Combate confirms Werdum will meet Oleynik at UFC 250 on May 9 from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Werdum is currently serving a two-year suspension from the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) that was handed down in 2018. However, Werdum was recently granted a 10-month reduction in his suspension and will be reinstated on April 1. Werdum hasn’t competed since March of 2018 when he was knocked out by Alexander Volkov.

The loss ended a two-fight win streak for the Brazilian, who later tested positive for the banned substance, trenbolone, and its metabolite, epitrenbolone, in an out-of-competition drug test. As for Oleynik, he ended a two-fight losing streak at UFC 246 when he submitted Maurice Greene in their heavyweight clash. After the win, Werdum actually took to Twitter to voice his desire for a fight with Oleynik.

“Congratulations @oleynikufc all my respect for you BUT I think my JiuJitsu it’s better, let’s dance you can be my special guest for my return in the UFC”

This is quite the matchup, as both Werdum and Oleynik are skilled grapplers that can submit their opponents from anywhere. If this fight finds its way to the ground, it will certainly be a sight to see.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum could be back in action sooner than expected.

The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) announced Thursday that the Brazilian had received a 10-month reduction to his initial two-year suspension in 2018 when he failed a drug test.

Although his period of eligibility began in May 2018, it was tolled for a period of time when he was not available for testing and had retired as per USADA. He is now eligible to compete on April 1.

The reduction comes as a result of Werdum providing substantial assistance to USADA during his suspension:

“Werdum, 42, received a reduction from the otherwise applicable period of ineligibility due to substantial assistance,” the USADA statement said. “Under the applicable rules, an athlete facing a period of ineligibility who provides information that leads to the discovery of another violation or which results in a criminal or disciplinary body discovering an offense, is eligible for a sanction reduction.”

Werdum’s last outing was a knockout loss to Alexander Volkov at UFC London. Despite being 42, he has already vowed to shock the world in his impending UFC return.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum is plotting his return to the Octagon.

Werdum is still serving a two-year suspension after violating the United States Anti-Doping Agency’s (USADA) anti-doping policy. He will be eligible to return to action in May of 2020. Although the suspension took a huge chunk of his career, Werdum, 42, still plans to fight on.

In fact, Werdum’s head coach, Rafael Cordeiro, tells Combate that Werdum would like a rematch with fellow former heavyweight king Junior dos Santos upon his return.

“We believe that 2020 will be a great year with the return of our champion and will surely return to fight for the title,” Cordeiro said. “His fight with Cigano would be very interesting. I don’t know about him, but on Werdum’s side it’s something he’s wanted to do for a long time.

“When Werdum was champ, it didn’t make much sense. Now with both of them coming off defeats, it would be interesting. If you have a problem, solve it in there and do what you have to do. They are two great athletes and a rematch would be a good fight for the champion.”

Dos Santos handed Werdum his first knockout loss under the UFC banner back in 2008. “Cigano” knocked his fellow countryman out in the first round in just over a minute at UFC 90. Since, both men have gone on to see heavyweight title reigns.
