Dual weight UFC champion Amanda Nunes will defend her featherweight title against top contender Felicia Spencer on June 6.

Nunes and Spencer were originally supposed to face off on May 9 at UFC 250 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the event was scrapped and the 145lb title fight was moved to this weekend’s UFC 249 event. The Brazilian then withdrew from the card as she wished to have a full camp before facing Spencer, Nunes told Brian Campbell CBS Sports.

“Actually, I’m not fighting May 9. “I’m going to fight, [but] I don’t know yet. I don’t think this is the right time for me right now to fight. Let this coronavirus pass a little bit so I can at least have a full camp. We can maybe see around June, [but] let’s see what is going to happen. But I’m not fighting [May 9].”

ESPN reporter Helwani broke news of the 145lb title fight will now take place on June 6 although it’s venue or position on the card is unclear.

“The Amanda Nunes vs. Felicia Spencer UFC women’s featherweight title fight is officially moving to June 6, per sources,” Helwani wrote on Twitter. “Location TBD. Also TBD whether it will serve as the main event.”

Nunes hasn’t fought at featherweight since dethroning all-time great fighter Cris Cyborg at UFC 232 in 2018. The Brazilian puncher has since had two defences of her bantamweight belt against Holly Holm and Germaine De Randamie.

Spencer returned to winning ways last time out dominating Zarah Fairn Dos Santos and scored a quick TKO victory at UFC Norfolk. The Canadian previously suffered her first career loss against Cyborg who has since moved on to Bellator paving the way for new challengers at the weight.

Dual weight UFC champion Amanda Nunes has announced she won’t be fighting top featherweight contender Felicia Spencer on May 9.

Nunes was previously scheduled to fight at UFC 250 in Brazil, however, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic meant the card was scrapped. The UFC announced their intention to host an alternative card on May 9 from an undisclosed location with Nunes defending her 145lb belt against Spencer on the bill.

Speaking to Brian Campbell of CBS Sports, Nunes said she will not be fighting on May 9 as she wants a full training camp.

Despite the ongoing pandemic Nunes has been able to train everyday at American Top Team in Florida. Her withdrawal is certainly nothing to do with her being out of shape right now, she explained.

“The gym opened just for people that has fights coming up,” Nunes said. “It’s not many people, just me and a couple guys that are going to be on the same card as me. We all have separate training with just me and my coach, one on one.

“I keep in shape like that. I go to the gym only one time in the morning and do everything. I do a couple of things by myself and some things that I need a coach. Then I come home and I really do everything I need to keep in shape. I have a treadmill and some weights.”

The Brazilian knockout artist is looking forward to her match-up against Spencer who shes believes will bring out her best performance.

“I like this matchup a lot,” Nunes said. “I like to fight girls like her — tough, want to fight all the time, she’s not a running fighter. She’s really going to bring that and I love it. That brings out the best in me.

How long will it be before we see Amanda Nunes fighting again?

Amanda Nunes and Felicia Spencer are both receptive to the idea of having their women’s featherweight title fight take place in Florida.

The pair were set to collide in the co-main event of UFC 250 which takes place May 9 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. However, given the coronavirus pandemic putting a halt to life around the world, there is a possibility the show will not go ahead.

Spencer has an idea, however. With both fighters living in Florida, she suggested that they compete in the Sunshine State instead.

“@Amanda_Leoa we both live in ?? Florida, let’s get #UFC250 ?to our back yard?. Please don’t leave! ? @Mickmaynard2 @danawhite @ufc”

Nunes responded on Wednesday and was a fan of the idea:

“Sorry. Just seeing this. I’m not going anywhere, girl. I think that’s a great idea. Let’s do this.”

Of course, that’s easier said than done.

While Florida was one of the few states that initially didn’t issue a statewide lockdown, Governor Ron DeSantis has now issued an order allowing for only essential activities and services.

In addition, he previously issued an executive “safer-at-home” order for the Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Monroe counties as per MMA Fighting.

Then again, given UFC president Dana White’s refusal to stop booking events, who knows?

Do you think the fight should be postponed or go ahead in Florida?

Felicia Spencer knows she is expected to lose when she battles Amanda Nunes, but she plans on spoiling that.

In the co-main event of UFC 250, Nunes is set to defend her featherweight strap against Spencer. Should Nunes win, she would be the first champ-champ to defend both belts, so the Canadian knows that is what everyone wants.

Yet, some were wondering if Nunes would even defend the featherweight belt but Spencer always knew it was going to happen.

“I was pretty confident that she would,” Spencer told MMA Junkie. “I think pretty early on, she’s been saying that she wanted to defend both belts. It’s not really ever a concern. I know that my division is so young in the UFC and kind of still a little bit uncertain that I don’t put all of my eggs into one basket. So I don’t expect too much. But it’s really nice that she’s going to be the first to attempt to defend her belt in two divisions. Hopefully I’ll spoil the plans of having a successful defense of the belt, unfortunately.”

Although Amanda Nunes has looked unbeatable, Spencer says she sees some areas where she can have success.

“There’s some openings that are left where Amanda’s been able to capitalize on it. I just have to make sure that I don’t have any openings, unnecessary openings,” she said. “There’s definitely some things to pay attention to with (Nunes’) last fight. But I know it’s not always a reflection of how the future fights can go, or a full reflection of her skill set. But I think there’s some places that I can excel in the clinch or on the ground. So yeah – I’m excited to start breaking it down, though.”

Currently, she is a massive underdog but Felicia Spencer is confident she’ll hear ‘And New’ at UFC 250.
