Fans will be in attendance at the upcoming UFC Fight Island events this month.

There have been no fans in attendance at a UFC event since UFC 248 took place last March due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

However, that will no longer be the case as Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism confirmed Thursday (via MMA Junkie) that the UFC’s next three events would take place at Etihad Arena — notably also on Yas Island — instead of the Flash Forum.

Additionally, a “limited number of spectators” will be allowed to watch the events. There is no word on how many fans exactly will be permitted as of now.

That means the upcoming events including UFC Fight Island 7 headlined by Max Holloway vs. Calvin Kattar; UFC Fight Island 8 headlined by Michael Chiesa vs. Neil Magny; and the UFC 257 pay-per-view headlined by Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier will have fans in attendance.

Of course, this was hinted at by UFC president Dana White back in November.

“I’m looking to make it International Fight Week,” White said of the events leading up to UFC 257. “The new Etihad Arena will be open, and that thing was designed with us in mind. Concerts, pool parties, all kinds of cool stuff. And, yes, I hope to bring fans back. … That’s what I’m shooting for.

“It would be good to have fans. And the thing is, from ‘Fight Island’ we can get fans all over the world there. It’s an easy destination to get to, a fun destination to go to, and we can just (expletive) blow the doors off this thing.

“I’m ready for some fights with fans. I’m ready to go to a live concert. I’m ready to have some parties. I’m gonna go to all this shit. I want to mingle with the fans again. I want the fans back. We’ve figured this whole thing out up to now. We’ll figure out how to do do this safely and pull this thing off in Abu Dhabi.”

It looks like White has delivered.

Are you excited to see fans back in attendance?

UFC Set To Return To Network Television

The move could mean the new year starts with the promotion having its first-ever event being held on ABC. This could also mark the promotion’s first live network event since UFC on Fox 31 on December 31st 2018. The UFC on Fox included 31 live events being held on the broadcasting station. This run started in November 2012 with the UFC heavyweight title bout between Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos. Ultimately, the stint ended on December 15th, 2018 with Kevin Lee vs. Al Iaquinta 2.

How many UFC fights will air on ABC? I don’t know.

Will the whole card be shown on ABC? I don’t know.

Very little is known about the finer details of the potential move, as you can see.

UFC Fight Night on January 16th will mark the return of the promotion to Fight Island. The other two events’ headline fights are Leon Edwards vs. Khamzat Chimaev and Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor 2.

January 30th was set to have a UFC card, but that has allegedly been scrapped. Additionally, a large amount of the fights pencilled in for that date have been moved to other events, adding validity to the cancellation specualtions. (H/T MMA Junkie)

I can’t wait for the UFC draught to end on January 16th. If you are wondering what the next UFC event looks like, then check out the scheduled match-ups below.

Max Holloway vs. Calvin Kattar Sara McMann vs. Julianna Pena Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Muslim Salikhov Mike Grundy vs. Nik Lentz Brian Kelleher vs. Ricky Simon Jacob Kilburn vs. Austin Lingo Carlos Felipe vs. Justin Tafa Punahele Soriano vs. Dusko Todorovic Anthony Hernandez vs. Rodolfo Vieira Bethe Correia vs. Wu Yanan Christian Aguilera vs. Warlley Alves Omari Akhmedov vs. Tom Breese Ramazan Emeev vs. David Zawada.

What do you think this alleged partnership with ABC will mean for the UFC in the long-term?

The UFC will be returning to Fight Island next month.

That’s according to BJ Penn who reported Tuesday that the January 16 Fight Night event as well as the UFC 257 pay-per-view event would take place in Abu Dhabi.

Recent fight contracts have been said to have Fight Island as the location. However, it is unclear if the January 30 event would also take place on Fight Island.

The January 16 event will be headlined by a mouth-watering featherweight clash between former champion Max Holloway and rising contender Calvin Kattar. UFC 257, of course, is headlined by the return of Conor McGregor as he meets Dustin Poirier in a rematch that will take place in the lightweight division this time.

The news isn’t completely a surprise.

Fight Island was previously mentioned by Dana White as a likely location for UFC 257 and it appears there is now more confirmation of that.

The UFC head honcho also revealed that he would be trying to get fans in attendance in addition to making International Fight Week take place on Fight Island.

“I’m looking to make it International Fight Week. The new Etihad Arena will be open, and that thing was designed with us in mind. Concerts, pool parties, all kinds of cool stuff. And, yes, I hope to bring fans back. … That’s what I’m shooting for.

“… It would be good to have fans.

I’m gonna go to all this sh*t. I want to mingle with the fans again. I want the fans back. We’ve figured this whole thing out up to now. We’ll figure out how to do do this safely and pull this thing off in Abu Dhabi.”

It’s looking more and more likely that there will be fans in attendance for McGregor’s return at the very least.

What do you make of the UFC returning to Fight Island for January?
