Gegard Mousasi will attempt to recapture the Bellator Middleweight Championship this week when he takes on Douglas Lima at Bellator 250. The pair’s bout will headline the 11-bout card, which goes down Thursday, Oct. 29, inside the Mohegan Sun Arena, Uncasville, Connecticut.

In Lima, Mousasi will be facing the Bellator welterweight champion; this is the second time the Dutchman has faced the company’s welterweight titleholder. In the second round of their middleweight title clash, he famously stopped Rory Mcdonald, at the time the promotion’s welterweight champ, after the Canadian moved up a division to challenge for the strap.

Speaking to media ahead of his fight, Mousasi gave his thoughts about his upcoming opponent.

” He has been dominant; he has been a champion. He avenged his two losses. I think his confidence is very high, and him seeing me as not a big middleweight, he feels like he can get the job done, ” Mousasi said.

“Overall, I think his mental[strength] is the most dangerous thing about him.”

When asked about where he ranks Lima in terms of the fighters he faced, Mousasi gave the following response.

” So I’m facing Douglas Lima in his prime. I think one of the toughest. Sometimes you can face a tough opponent and finish him in two-rounds, one-round, sometimes an unknown name fighter gives you the hardest fights. I don’t know. We’ll see what kind of challenge he will bring, but definitely a very game and tough opponent to face. I am all prepared, a little bit worried, but that’s good. Keeps me sharp.”

When asked if he would think about moving up to Light Heavyweight to take a shot at Vadim Nemkov’s crown, Mousasi appeared receptive to the idea.

“After this [Lima], it’s John Slater first, and then I’m all open for it. For me, I don’t have the desire to be a double champion. It’s not like it’s a goal of mine, but it’s an accomplishment that would be nice to finish, but to be honest, I would rather have it a little bit later. After two-three more fights at middleweight.”

At 35-years of age, Mousasi is closer to the end of his career than the beginning. However, thankfully, it looks like fans will get the chance to see Mousasi in action for a little while longer.

Mousasi MacDonald

As quarantine continues for most of the world, Bellator MMA has started releasing full fights including the middleweight title fight between Gegard Mousasi and Rory MacDonald.

Back when both fighters were champions, MacDonald — the welterweight king at the time — moved up to challenge Mousasi for his crown in the Bellator 206 headliner in September 2018. If the Canadian had emerged victorious, he would have become the promotion’s first-ever two-weight champion.

However, Mousasi proved to be too big and experienced for the “Red King” as he finished him with brutal ground and pound in the second round of their title contest.

You can watch it below courtesy of the Bellator MMA YouTube channel:

Mousasi would later lose his middleweight title to Rafael Lovato Jr. while MacDonald would get outpointed by Douglas Lima to be unseated as welterweight champion. With Lovato recently stepping away from the sport, Mousasi is now set to face Lima for the vacant title.

Meanwhile, MacDonald departed the promotion late last year and is set to make his PFL debut later this year.

Looking back at the fight, what do you make of it now? Should MacDonald have never been in the cage with Mousasi in the first place?

Gegard Mousasi, Israel Adesanya

Former Bellator middleweight titleholder Gegard Mousasi fancies his chances against the current 185lb UFC champion Israel Adesanya.

Speaking to theScore, Mousasi explained why Adesanya is style-wise, a good match-up for him, he said.

“It would be a good fight for me. You have to be patient and not brawl with him. Because then he counters – and I’m good at the distance. That would be a great fight because I sparred with some guys he fought at Glory (kickboxing) and I did very well against them. So, I can measure with that. … But it’s a hypothetical, so it’s not going to happen.”

Unfortunately for fans, the likelihood of this fight ever happening is almost zero. Mousasi has decided he won’t be testing free agency after his contract expired and instead opted to re-sign with Bellator. Explaining his thought process behind sticking with his current promotion, Mousasi said.

“I talked to (Bellator President) Scott (Coker), and in (less than an hour), we had a deal, I think,” Mousasi said. “So, I’m happy, I’m very happy. … I’ve been treated very well. I feel like the payment is good. The relationship that I have with Scott, the Bellator staff, it feels like you’re part of a team, you know? It’s more connected, let’s say.”

The 34-year-old is currently scheduled to face welterweight champion Douglas Lima at Bellator 243 on May 9 in California. However, due to the ongoing Coronavirus crisis, it is unclear if the fight will take place. Bellator President Scott Coker has received praise for his reaction to the ongoing pandemic, which has included canceling events and ensuring his fighters and staff are paid.

If the fight does take place, Mousasi will have the chance to reclaim the recently vacated middleweight title, which he previously lost to Rafael Lovato Jr.
