UFC Suggesting Fighters and Coaches Purchase Fight Pass Instead of Sending Them Fight Tapes.

Cheap Shot

We all know UFC is on the hunt for economy. After the UEM-ING’s 4 billion dollar purchase of the promotion from the Fertita brothers things have been a bit tight to say the least. We’ve seen a myriad of “big money” fights and interim titles to garner interest in the casual fan. However there are some amenities a professional sports organization must provide, and tape of their rival individual/ team is one of them.

In a recent twitter post Brandon Gibson (coach at JacksonWinkMMA) let the social media community know that the UFC will no longer be providing coaches and fighters with fight tape and want fight team to purchase UFC fight pass instead.

While we all love UFC fight pass, professionals who are in the sport need tape to properly prepare their fighters. Tape provides things like slow motion, the ease of rewind, and other tools fight camps need to adequately study the competition. Now coaches will either have to DVR and edit or hire someone to do it for them.

The UFC use to provide zip drive links to download which lead Brandon Gibson and the Jackson Wink fight team to 3 of the top 10 knockouts of 2016, so we’d like to think they know what they’re talking about.

The question you have to ask yourself is do the ends justify the means? Do a couple of thousand dollars justify making it harder for coaches to prepare their fighters for quality fights? You would think as a business the UFC would want to put out the highest quality product for the least amount of give. The most return for your invest. If you’re viewing it from that sense then this latest move is a real head scratcher. Is the promotion really bleeding that bad?

Hit us up in the comments section below on your views of the latest UFC changes. Should the fighters and coaches just get over it or is this just a little ridiculous.

The Technique Thief: The Move Holly Holm Should Steal From Dominick Cruz

If you know me, which many of you don’t, you’d understand that I’m absolutely in love with striking. I certainly love MMA and respect the ground game a ton (this coming from a guy who was thoroughly entertained by Jon Fitch back in the day), but striking has always been my favorite part of the game and as such, I do have a leaning towards striking based fighters. But after witnessing the main event of UFC 208 it became painfully obvious that what was missing was some quality grappling work, mainly on Holly Holm’s end who initiated the wrestling exchanges.

Germaine de Randamie came in with a game plan that entirely based on putting her fist on Holm’s chin. Holm did indeed try to mix things up, but it was painfully obvious that she wasn’t getting anywhere with her tactics.

So now that she’s on a three fight skid, what exactly should Holly Holm be putting into her game? It’s a fairly common question with a reasonably obvious answer. Holly needs a wrestling game. But saying so is fairly boring. Instead, we should be wondering what kind of wrestling moves would compliment her game. Even further still, which high level fighter should she be watching and hoping to emulate in order to add some wrestling skills into her game that makes sense with her striking style?

Dominick Cruz’s knee tap takedown.

A knee tap takedown isn’t some kind of patented move owned by Dominick Cruz. It’s a wrestling technique that you can find many fighters employing. The reason I reference Dominick Cruz’s knee tap is because of the way he implements the technique while at the same time using lateral movement.

Holly Holm’s striking style is all based around lateral movement. Her biggest issue that she’s facing is the fact that she likes to blitz in naked with no fakes or feints before hand. Her opponents know that she wants to come forward with punches when she performs her blitz and she does though usually on the same angle offering nothing in the way of surprises.

But some added lateral movement coupled with a blitz and finishing with a knee tap takedown would make her a dangerous woman to face off against.

While the above clip is a double leg takedown, the principles remain the same in terms of using level changes as well as cutting to the correct angle off her own footwork. As Holly initiates the blitz from her southpaw stance, she could abandon the attack or use it as a smokescreen, get a deep underhook with the left arm and knee tap with her right arm to throw her opponent off. She could also use it as a counter as well as Holly has fine countering sense.

But all this is going to remain a pipe dream unless it’s actually practiced on the mat. While this addition to her game wouldn’t fix all the issues, no fighter is perfect after all, it would go a long way to making Holly Holm an even more dangerous fighter at this point.

What techniques do you think Holly Holm could use?

Fallout: UFC 208 AKA The Brooklyn Screw Job

Well that was interesting to say the least. UFC 208 wasn’t the most action packed event of the new year and it’s definitely left us with more questions than answers at its conclusion. Holly Holm failed to be the first woman to win belts in multiple divisions as she dropped a razor close decision to Germaine de Randamie or the post bell puncher as she’s begun to be labeled. The fight was competitive with a few slow spots here and there. But the drama surrounding the main event more than made up for any lulls in the action. So what’s the takeaway from UFC 208?

The fight was competitive with a few slow spots here and there. But the drama surrounding the main event more than made up for any lulls in the action. So what’s the takeaway from UFC 208?

Holly Holm Has Nothing To Be Sorry About

A lot of people want to rag on Holly Holm because she missed some key opportunities to take advantage of a rocked de Randamie. But the perhaps the biggest critic of Holm was herself. At the post fight press conference she seemed to be beating up on herself almost as harshly as Germaine did during the bout. While Holm does need to work on the technique in her takedowns, thinking that she was being stupid isn’t going to solve things. Many believed that she won and while that may be scant consolation, it’s something she should hold onto as she takes the next step in her career. She does have a bloodthirsty streak, but she can no longer hesitate when she has her opponent on the ropes.

Germaine de Randamie Isn’t A Cheater

Germaine de Randamie is the new women’s featherweight champ and already people are disrespecting her reign. While she won the decision, many believe that Holm deserved the nod. But perhaps the biggest impression de Randamie made on the fans was the fact that she continually landed punches to Holm’s chin after the bell. Many believe points should have been taken, which isn’t too outrageous a call. What is pretty dumb are people believing de Randamie is a cheater. If anything, Germaine exhibited her hotblooded nature more than proving that she’s a cheat. The heat of the moment affects fighters in different ways. I’ve thrown a punch or kick a bit late, but not to take advantage. When your mind is in fight mode sometimes slip ups really can occur. But really it’s a situation for the ref. Germaine will have her chance to prove she’s the legit champion in time. Until then all the fans and haters will have to accept the judges decision.

Referees Suck

Yeah…they really do. Next time the UFC has a belt on the line they better call in “Big” John McCarthy and Herb Dean every time. Doesn’t mean there won’t be any chance at controversy, but at least you’d have some tried and true refs with plenty of experience on hand.

What are your takeaways from UFC 208?

Yoel Romero Pulls A Funny And Trolls Bisping With GoFundMe Page

I see what you did there

Most people think of Yoel Romero as a humble God fearing man that occasionally likes to knock people the F@#k out. But this recent stunt shows there’s a little more mischief in the middleweight than currently thought, and we think we like it.

In a back and forth that has been going on for months between middleweight champ Michael Bisping and #1 contender Yoel Romero,  the “Soldier of God” decided to become quite devilish by upping the stakes in their battle of words. Romero recently started a “GoFundMe” page for the British brawler stating he will need “money to rebuild his life” and fund his “retirement party” after their projected meeting on May 2017.

“This is Mike, he will be needing money to survive after me and him meet in the octagon approximately May of 2017,” Romero’s page states. “He is happy in this picture after defending his title against another fighter and the devastation he went through has caused him to have surgery on his knee where all the visible damage was on his face. This surgery has prevented him from competing in a timely manner. After his fight with me, I am convinced he will need this money to rebuild his life, he has a family and I am deeply concerned for him. Please help any way that you can as all funds will be used for medical expenses and his retirement party. Thank you for your time and #ynuevo.”

Savage. Didn’t know Romero had it in him. To be completely honest, it’s probably not Romero as much as his management team, but either way, it counts. Romero also gets extra marks for using the relevance of Bisping’s current injury in the prank…nice.

If you or any other concerned family or friends would like to donate to putting “The count” back together again, please feel free to donate here. If not, we will send a juiced to the tits (allegedly) Cuban to flying knee you into oblivion. Operators are standing by.

Free At Last

Jason “Mayhem” Miller has had a rocky couple of years, to say the least. After being arrested for multiple felony charges including spitting on an officer and barricading himself in his Mission Viejo home while live tweeting the whole event, Miller was then arrested for domestic violence charges against his then girlfriend.

Mayhem has now been exonerated of all domestic battery charges and the MMA fighter says he feels the world has “opened up” to him.

“I feel like the world’s opened up to me now. I feel like things are finally cleared up for Mayhem,” Miller said, adding that he’ll celebrate by going to the gym.”

“I feel tremendous,” Miller said outside the courtroom. “Justice was served. The system worked, kind of slowly, but it worked.”

His ex-girlfriend claimed Mayhem had straddled her and punched her in the face repeatedly during a domestic incident, but the former Strikeforce contender says he was the one that was attacked that night.

“She chased me out the back door, ripped off my shirt and jumped on my back and choked me,” Miller testified.

It took the jury an hour to deliberate and they found no sufficient evidence that Miller had in fact committed any crime. 36 year old Miller says he wants to get back to the gym where he trains and manages other fighters. Mayhem is still facing charges for multiple other felonies but this is definitely a step in the right direction.

What do you guys think will come of the former “Bully beatdown” star, will we see him back in the octagon anytime soon?
