UFC 205 Picks: Can Donald Cerrone Cement Himself As A Weltwerweight Contender If He Beats Kelvin Gastelum?

UFC 205 coverage is sponsored by MetroPCS

It’s finally here. UFC 205 is an event that will forever change the complexion of mixed martial arts as the biggest MMA promotion in the world has it’s first major event in the state of New York. Throughout the week there will be plenty of topics to talk about, but you know I’ll be salivating at the chance to breakdown the event fight by fight. Each match would be a potential main event attraction on any other card, which means there’s going to be high level bouts throughout the night. First up for analysis: the welterweight match between Ultimate Fighter winner Kelvin Gastelum and perennial contender Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.

Kelvin Gastelum was a scrappy wrestler when he first entered the UFC ranks. These days we’ve seen the young contender turn from wrestler with decent striking to a much more well rounded fighter. His last outing against former champion Johny Hendricks shows just how far Gastelum has come. He was able to use great movement coupled with with leg kicks and a sharp jab cross combination to obtain victory. While he may not be a better striker than Donald Cerrone, Gastelum is more than comfortable on his feet and also has the great equalizer: wrestling. If Gastelum wants to throw Cerrone off of his game he’ll have to engage in an extended battle on the feet, get his opponent comfortable, then shoot for single legs, preferably after throwing his left cross. He’ll have to be careful about telegraphing these strikes as Cerrone has a dangerous counter knee that will be awaiting him every time he chooses to close the gap.

Speaking of Cowboy, Donald Cerrone has become a wrecking machine at welterweight. Without having to worry about a crazy weight cut, Cerrone instead can focus on his technique to confound opponents on the feet. He has also developed a strong wrestling game of his own and uses it to throw usually superior wrestlers off their game. Cowboy should continue the trend in this fight against Gastelum in order to confuse his less experienced opponent. Cowboy has such fearsome striking that throwing anything different at his opponent will always catch them off guard. When the fight does remain on the feet, Cowboy should have two plans of attack. In the beginning he should avoid rushing in and trying to start too fast as Gastelum is likely to have the power advantage and is most certainly looking to come forward. Cowboy should play counter fighter on the outside for the first couple of minutes of the bout then steadily increase his output once he understands Gastelum’s timing and strategy. Gastelum does fall prey to a lack of creativity at times so Cowboy can use that to his advantage by grasping the TUF winner’s rhythm and then thoroughly breaking that rhythm throughout the fight.

This is a closely contested bout with plenty on the line. It’s a coin flip, one that can easily see either man coming out on top. But my gut is telling me that Donald Cerrone picks up another win by finding Gastelum’s timing and picking him apart over the course of three rounds. The pick is Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone by decision.

Who do you think wins at UFC 205?

Jon Jones Gets One Year Suspension In USADA Case

Verdict’s in…

In case you haven’t been keeping up with everyone’s favorite cage fighting junkie, Jon Jones has been awaiting sentencing on his arbitration case held last monday with USADA. After testing positive for estrogen blockers clomiphene and Letrozol, Jones proclaimed his innocence and vowed to be vindicated. And he was, kinda.

While USADA did slap Jones with a full one year suspension for his violation, they did make it a point to include that “the applicant was not a drug cheat”, and that the suspension was mainly due to “his degree of fault”, which “verged on the reckless”. In layman’s terms, Jon was negligent and irresponsible with the substances he was putting inside his body.

“On the evidence before the Panel, the Applicant is not a drug cheat,” the arbitrators wrote in their epilogue. “He did not know that the tablet he took contained prohibited substances or that those substances had the capacity to enhance sporting performance. However by his imprudent use of what he pungently referred to as a ‘dick pill’ he has not only lost a year of his career but an estimated nine million dollars. This outcome which he admits to be a wake-up call for him should serve as a warning to all others who participate in the same sport.”

What could be the reasoning for such a major oversight? “Dick Pills.” He claims he took pills from a teammate that were suppose to be for sexual performance. Unfortunately for Jones the pill didn’t just get him hot and bothered, it also caught the attention of the authorities.

While it may seem like 1 year is not so bad (seeing as it would start back in July 2016), you have to remember that he could be facing a further 2 year suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. While one of those years would be concurrently, that still means it could possibly be several years before the G.O.A.T could fight again.

Now I don’t know about you guys but his line of defense seems pretty thin. Most likely it was a story he was advised to tell to have some sort of excuse for his negligence. Yoel Romero took a substance in a mark bottle with a list of substances; the substance he did get popped for wasn’t listed in the ingredients – this is a whole nother story.

“Although I was hopeful for a better outcome in the USADA ruling today,  I am very respectful of the process in which they allowed me to defend myself. I have always maintained my innocence and I am very happy I have been cleared in any wrong doing pursuant to the allegations made that I had intentionally  taken a banned substance. I am pleased that in USADA’s investigation they determined I was “not a cheater of the sport”. Being cleared of these allegations was very important to me. I have worked hard in and outside of the octagon to regain my image and my fighting career and will take these next eight months to continue my training and personal growth both as a man and a athlete. Thank you to all of my fans, teammates, coaches, sponsors  and to the UFC for their continued support.”

While a moral victory for Jones, he definitely felt the long arm of the law on this one. Here’s to hoping it stays at one year. What do you think of USADA’s verdict, fair or foul play?

No Call Out? No Problem. Tony Ferguson Is Forging His Own Path.

UFC Fight Night 98 showcased just how incredibly competitive the lightweight division truly is. You’d be hard pressed to find a UFC lightweight capable of winning five in a row. You’re even less likely to find a lightweight fighter capable of having a nine fight win streak. Yet Tony Ferguson was able to accomplish exactly that, making him one of the greatest lightweights in the division. After his victory over Rafael dos Anjos this past Saturday night, Ferguson secured his name amongst the greatest fighters in lightweight history. So was it really smart of him not to call for a title shot after his victory?

You’re even less likely to find a lightweight fighter capable of having a nine fight win streak. Yet Tony Ferguson was able to accomplish exactly that, making him one of the greatest lightweights in the division. After his victory over Rafael dos Anjos this past Saturday night, Ferguson secured his name amongst the greatest fighters in lightweight history. So was it really smart of him not to call for a title shot after his victory?

UFC 205 is right around the corner and the lightweight belt is up for grabs. Come next Monday either Eddie Alvarez or Conor McGregor will be the champion at 155 and a bonafide star. If McGregor wins then whoever fights him at lightweight will be sure to be looking at a big money fight and in prize fighting, for some, that’s the whole point. It appears that Tony Ferguson isn’t apart of that camp.

“When I get to that title, it will be my title, and it will by my fight. Not because I talked my way to get there, or because I have a big-ass following. I don’t care. I’m here for a reason. I’m here to win.”

That was Tony Ferguson’s response when asked why he didn’t call anyone out after his victory. Most fighters want to become champion to prove they’re the best in the world. To Tony Ferguson that’s not the case whatsoever. He doesn’t seem like the kind of man who cares about the accolades and the glitz and glamor of being a star. Instead “El Cucuy” is a man that just wants to get into a fist fight and would likely do it for free.

So here’s the real question. Is there anything wrong with that?

Some people want the fame, others just the money. Tony Ferguson wants you to prove that you’re as tough as you claim to be. In a way, Ferguson is looking for honesty in a sport where larger than life characters and faux tough guys are abound. Everyone has their own journey and who’s to say what Tony Ferguson is doing with his own is the wrong or right way. Rather than criticize his actions, we should instead be looking at his decision from a different angle. Rather than showing us the right or the wrong way this past Saturday, Tony Ferguson shows us his way and that’s just what we should desire from these fighters that put everything on the line.

What do you think of Tony Ferguson’s decision?

So the time has finally come. The biggest event of the year, in UFC history is just right around the corner. As in next weekend. This weekend however is a bit of a primer for what’s to come at UFC 205 on November 12. While it may not sport the craziest line up out there, UFC Fight Night 98 features a compelling lightweight main event as former champion Rafael dos Anjos attempts to get back to his winning ways against the streaking Tony Ferguson.

Rafael dos Anjos was being touted as the most fearsome lightweight in the UFC when he was matched up against Eddie Alvarez this past July. Many picked Rafael to dominate, but was instead met with a vicious looping right hand that put him on roller skates and out of the fight. If Rafael wants to get back on track he’ll have to tangle with Tony Ferguson who is a difficult style match up for most everyone in the division. If Rafael dos Anjos hopes to get back to his winning ways he’ll have to employ a low kicking game as well as get the fight into the pocket. Ferguson’s come forward style will also leave him open for the takedown. When the fight hits the ground Rafael will have to deal with scrambles and will need to explode to stay on top. The best chance for victory would be for the former champion to pressure him up against the cage and beat up Ferguson’s legs and body.

On the other side of the equation, Tony Ferguson will want to keep his usually high paced style to confound dos Anjos. Ferguson utilizes his length well when he resorts to using his front kicks like a jab. As he pushes forward though he often finds himself with his back against the cage which could lead to a well timed takedown from the former champion. Ferguson’s ability to create chaos is a key factor in this match up as his high pace and funky techniques could force dos Anjos to get wild. The more wild the fight becomes, the more it favors Ferguson and it’ll be up to his opponent to either counter or suffer falling prey to a well timed cross or a scrambling submission.

All in all this is a pretty fun fight with no clear winner. Both are pressure fighters but employ their methods in different ways, dos Anjos being the patient stalker and Ferguson the wild ball of energy. Ultimately the wild pace that Ferguson puts on dos Anjos will prove to be the former champion’s undoing. Look for Tony Ferguson to secure a fight ending submission in the fourth round.

Who do you think will be victorious?

UFC 101: Robert Whittaker vs. Derek Brunson Named New Main Event

Like everyone, I was super bummed about Luke Rockhold pulling out of UFC Fight Night 101 due to knee injury. Set for November 27th against Jacare Souza, it would’ve been a rematch 5 years in the making. While it’s hard to replace what could’ve possibly been the next contender for the middleweight title, a Whittaker vs. Brunson fight ain’t bad.

I’ll Allow It…

Like everyone, I was super bummed about Luke Rockhold pulling out of UFC Fight Night 101 due to knee injury.  Set for November 27th against Jacare Souza, it would’ve been a rematch 5 years in the making. While it’s hard to replace what could’ve possibly been the next contender for the middleweight title, a Whittaker vs. Brunson fight ain’t bad.

If anyone knows about Whittaker’s raw power combined with his well rounded skill and high fight IQ knows this one will be a barn burner. Brunson however is an absolute monster with no fear, just recently folding up Uriah Hall in the first round like a beach chair. Though Whittaker MIGHT be able to stand with Brunson, once it hits the ground it’s all over but the tears as Brunson is a 3x division II All American wrestler with a purple belt under the Renzo Gracie academy. But we all know how MMA math goes so that one will be worth watching.

So what does this mean for the middleweight picture? Does this automatically set up a title match between Jacare Souza  and champ Michael Bisping? Probably not. Although this is what the fans want to see and it makes logical sense, it seems Bisping is calling out anyone from Nick Diaz to GSP, anyone but the who’s who of the middleweight division.

Now it’s hard to call a UFC veteran “scared”, but he’s definitely looking for the easiest money making fight he can get, and who can blame him? That’s the thing with the new era of MMA, it’s no longer about the best matchups but about the biggest payday. Not wrong, but different, we’ve got a whole lot of Conor McGregor’s running around but unlike Conor they’re not taking the toughest matchups just chasing after the biggest paydays. This leaves the sport with  no heart, a lot of paperchasers looking out for themselves instead of giving it all for the sport…but I digress.

If Dana White’s past actions are any indications most likely Jacare will be on the sidelines for a while. One would have to imagine the winner of the Wiedman vs. Romero fight would secure a title shot with a dominant victory. If money isn’t an issue Jacare could refuse to fight for anything less than a title shot but if it is he may have to take another fight in the meantime. The middleweight division is a strange fruit that will probably get weirder before the year is out. Who knows, Robert Whittaker or Derek Brunson may be in the running sooner than we think.

Let us know what you think of the main event and the middleweight picture in general in the comments section below.
