Geoff Neal’s longtime coach Sayif Saud explained what led to the welterweight contender being forced on the sidelines.
And according to Saud, it all started earlier this month when Neal was suffering from an unknown infection that resulted in him falling into critical condition last week.
“For two days, we didn’t know if he was gonna make it,” Saud told ESPN. “He went to the emergency room on Sunday [Aug. 2], he was septic by the time he got there. I spoke to the nurse and she says, ‘We need to take him to ICU right now, he’s in critical condition.’ That’s when my heart really sank.
“They said his white blood cell count was 20,000, when it’s supposed to be 12,000. His body was fighting something, but they didn’t know what it was. They still don’t.”
It wasn’t the flu or COVID-19 either as Neal tested negative for both. However, physicians informed Saud that Neal’s heart was failing at one point which is why he was placed on dialysis.
He is on his way to recovering now, however.
Neal is regarded by many to be a future title contender as he is currently 5-0 with the UFC and coming off a first-round TKO win over Mike Perry in December last year.
He was struggling to land a ranked opponent ever since, so it will come as a huge blow that he won’t be fighting Magny anymore. However, his health is more important at this point so hopefully he has a speedy and full recovery.

Welterweight contender Geoff Neal is of out his fight against Neil Magny after he “almost died”. Former champion Robbie Lawler is expected to step in to face Mangy on August 29 in Las Vegas.
Neal was due to have his first fight of the year. The #11 ranked welterweight had previously struggled to find an opponent after putting together a five-fight win streak which includes impressive victories over the likes of Mike Perry and Niko Price.
‘Hands of Steel’ will need to sit out a little longer after suffering from an unknown medical condition that led him on the brink of death. Neal posted two pictures to Instagram showing him looking worse for wear in a hospital bed. The images were captioned with the following statement:
“These past few week have been crazy, and that’s putting it lightly. It’s really hard to try to find an eloquent way to say “I almost died.” So screw it.. I almost died…. This really put alot of things into perspective for me. Never did I ever think I would be hooked up to a dialysis machine before my 30s. Everything was going well for me. Was training everyday, making money at work, just signed a contract for a huge fight, then BOOM, life hit me with a check hook. I’m just glad to be home after having to spend 1 week in the ICU. Stay healthy out there y’all and listen to your body at all times.”
Lawler will now step in to fight Magny on just a few weeks’ notice according to a report from MMA DNA. The former 170lb king has lost three straight fights and hasn’t won since picking up a unanimous decision victory over Donald Cerrone at UFC 214 in July 2017.
Everyone at LowKickMMA wishes Geoff Neal a speedy recovery.

UFC welterweight contender Geoff Neal seems to have finally found an opponent. The promotion is currently arranging for him to fight Neil Magny on the August 29 card which will be headlined by Thiago Santos vs. Glover Teixeira.
“Contracts not signed, but Geoff Neal (@handzofsteelmma) vs. Neil Magny (@NeilMagny) is in the works for 8/29 per sources. Magny has 16 wins as a UFC welterweight. Neal is on a rocket ship to the title at 5-0, with four stoppages. This is a big one.”
Neal previously expressed frustration at being made to sit on the sidelines for so long. ‘Hands of steel’ hasn’t fought since scoring a quick KO victory against Mike Perry in December 2019.
“I tell people I’m in purgatory in my career,” Neal told James Lynch. “I’m ranked No 11, not in the top-10 yet. I don’t have a big following behind me, so everybody that I want to fight doesn’t want to fight me because I’m a big risk. I’m somebody who knocks people out so I’m dangerous for their stock. So I see why they don’t want to accept the fight with me. But it’s still bullish*t, I need to get paid, but I’m just sitting out here waiting.
The #10 ranked welterweight revealed he has even gone back to working a job as a server at Texas Steakhouse, he said.
“I actually started working again right before COVID, because I could foresee that I was going to be sitting on the bench for a while, so I needed to start doing something. So I’m actually back working, I started working on Wednesday, I’m actually going home now to get ready for work,” Neal said.
“I’m actually back at Texas Steakhouse, I can’t do Moxies anymore. The two- or three-o’clock on the morning is what kills me. I’m a server right now (at Texas Steakhouse).” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)
Neal is looking like a contender right now with seven straight wins. Each of his lat three have been more impressive than the last. His quick KO of Perry was proceeded by another big win over Niko Price and before that he picked up the decision victory over Belal Muhammad.
Magny is a long-time contender in the welterweight division. He is currently riding a two-fight win streak. ‘The Haitian Sensation’ scored consecutive decision wins against Li Jingliang and Anthony Rocco Martin.

Welterweight contender Geoff Neal believes Michael Chiesa is “scared sh*tless” by the idea of fighting him.
Speaking to MMA Fighting Neal revealed he is happy with the UFC who are actively trying to secure him an opponent – it just seems like no-one wants to fight him, he said.
“The UFC’s been doing a great job trying to find me a fight. They can only do so much. They can’t make somebody fight. You hear Dana White say all the time ‘I can’t make these guys fight.’ That’s really what it comes down to. They’ve been trying. I don’t know the exact details of what the other parties have been offered but I know sh*t’s been going around and they’ve been pretty much saying no.”
Neal was keen to say he doesn’t believe most welterweights are ducking him, just Chiesa who thinks is “scared sh*tless” by the idea of fighting him, he said.
“I don’t want to call any fighters scared. Well, I will call one fighter scared. I think Michael Chiesa is f*cking scared sh*tless to fight me.”
“I feel like that fight makes so much sense and he’s trying to make it seem like it doesn’t make sense,” Neal said. “That doesn’t make sense to me and it makes me think you’re scared. You only have three wins in the welterweight division. You fought two dudes who are pretty much f**king lightweights and one dude that’s old as hell.
“And then you think you deserve Colby Covington? No. Just because you’re ranked No. 7 or 8 or whatever the f**k you are, fight me. I’m 5-0, you’re 3-0, the fight makes sense. He’s trying to make it like the fight doesn’t make sense and I don’t know what to make of that.”
If it really is fear keeping Chiesa or any other fighter from stepping in againt him, Neal says they should probably think about calling it a day.
“If it is fear keeping people from fighting me, they need to retire from this sport,” Neal said. “This is the fight game. When it comes time to fight, yeah, I’m scared but I don’t give a f**k. That’s not going to stop me from fighting somebody. It’s the fight game.
“If that’s the reason they don’t want to fight me because they’re scared, they need to re-evaluate what the hell they’re doing.”
Do you think Michael Chiesa is ducking Geoff Neal?
