Former longtime UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre will make his long awaited return to action later this year when he meets middleweight titleholder Michael Bisping at a date and venue to be decided. St. Pierre hasn’t competed since UFC 167 in 2013 when he scored a highly controversial decision victory over Johny Hendricks, vacating his title and announcing his hiatus soon thereafter.

While the bout with Bisping is certainly an intriguing one, another possible matchup for St. Pierre’s return would’ve been a clash with ex-middleweight king Anderson Silva. The two were often linked to a potential super fight when each was at the peak of his reign, but the bout never materialized.

According to “Rush”, he was actually only offered the fight with Silva once, and that offer came after UFC 167:

“It is possible,” St-Pierre said on a recent edition of the UFC Unfiltered podcast. “The truth is this: The only time I’ve been offered to fight Anderson Silva, formally – like formally – like a real offer, was after my fight with Johny Hendricks (at UFC 167) when I retired. It’s not (that I turned it down) because it was Anderson Silva. I would not have fought nobody. You could have put a midget of 3-foot tall, (and) I would not have even fought him. I wouldn’t want to fight. I was tired. I wanted to take time off.”

St. Pierre also said that years ago he was interested in fighting Silva at a catchweight with the World Ant-Doping Agency (WADA) administering the drug testing. Unfortunately, the UFC didn’t appear to be interested in this idea, with injuries to St. Pierre also preventing the super fight from happening:

“We talked about Anderson Silva many times with (former UFC CEO) Lorenzo (Fertitta) and (UFC President) Dana (White),” St-Pierre said. “What I wanted to do at the time – there was a big lineup of contenders in my division and what I wanted to do, if I would have fought him at the time because I would have had to defend my title too, I would have done it at a catchweight (of) 177 (pounds) with (World Anti-Doping Agency testing). Because USADA was not in place back then, and I wanted to do the WADA testing for performance-enhancing drugs.

“I think the UFC didn’t really like the idea at the time. But then after I had to fight other guys, after I blew out my ACL then a lot of guys were waiting for me to come back. I didn’t have a time to stop or the opportunity to (fight Silva).”

Silva is currently 41 years of age, but he recently got back to his winning ways with a decision victory over Derek Brunson at UFC 208 last month.

Former longtime UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre hasn’t competed since 2013 when he vacated his 170-pound title, but he announced a few months ago that he was finally ready to return to the cage, and it seemed as if UFC 206, which is slated to take place Dec. 10 from St. Pierre’s home of Canada, was a likely landing spot.

St. Pierre, however, has since announced that he was a free agent, a claim the UFC quickly disputed, making it appear as if negotiations have hit a rough patch. UFC President Dana White has also continued to say that “Rush” doesn’t want to fight.

All signs have pointed to UFC 206 going on without the Canadian star, but perhaps there remains a glimpse of hope, as rumors have been swirling lately that a bout between GSP and reigning middleweight champ Michael Bisping could be in the works for the card.

“The Count”, who just defended his title for the first time against Dan Henderson at Oct. 8’s UFC 204, initially denied reports that he could potentially be making a quick turnaround and be fighting at UFC 206, but he took to his official Twitter account last night urging St. Pierre to ‘sign the papers’:

Bisping then said that he has already agreed to the fight:

The MMA world saw a bit of a stir earlier today (Thurs., July 14, 2016) when a report surfaced from famed boxing trainer Freddie Roach that UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping turned down a potentially massive title bout with rumored-to-be returning former welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre.

That seemed to be the case – at least on the surface, anyway – when UFC president Dana White revealed that Bisping would face rival and MMA legend Dan Henderson in the main event of October’s UFC 204, which was tentatively slated for ‘The Count’s’ backyard of Manchester, England.

But if and when he gets past ‘Hendo,’ Bisping quickly rebutted the notion that he had turned down any fight with St. Pierre. He took to Twitter this evening to call the Roach interview a certain brand of excrement:

Earlier in the day, Bisping had replied to a follower that while he has no bad blood towards Roach, his facts were wrong as he hadn’t even been offered the fight:

If you saw his on-air response to Henderson’s Team Quest teammate Sam Alvey’s bizzare quasi-callout of Bisping after defeated UFC debutee Eric Spicely in South Dakota, it’s clear that he wants nothing but to avenge his historic UFC 100 knockout loss to the revered PRide and Strikeforce champion.

Beyond that is unknown, but according to ‘The Count’s’ words, he’d most certainly take a bout against St. Pierre if offered.

With “Rush’s” comeback certain to take over as one of the top headlines in the UFC if and when it happens, he’d be foolish not to.
