UFC 87 Jon Jones

The all-time great ‘Bones’ Jon Jones made his UFC debut on August 9, 2008. MMA fans were immediately impressed by the incredible skill of the young fighter. UFC 87 also featured Brock Lesnar, and Georges St-Pierre, among others.

Jon Jones – UFC 87

It feels like a lifetime has passed since Jones captured UFC gold and held onto that title with an iron grip. But, ‘Bones’ made his UFC debut at just 21 years old and merely on two weeks’ notice as he was a late replacement. The undefeated 6-0 fight would continue his win streak over the highly respected Andra Gusmao.

Brazil’s Gusmao was also making his UFC debut with an unbeaten 5-0 and was considered a very hot prospect. His hype train was derailed by Jon Jones who showed an interesting mix of spinning back elbows and unorthodox takedowns.

On the UFC 87 fight, Jon Jones said:

“I was trying to stay low-key and composed. But once I hit the arena and they locked that gate, there were no jitters. Gusmao was my first fight that went the distance. He definitely had a chin on him and he wasn’t going down, but I don’t believe in standing around and waiting. I think when you step into the cage, you’ve got to take the cage and make it your zone.”

Jones added:

“All the crazy spinning back fists and back kicks, spinning elbows and all that crazy stuff that I do while competing have strictly come from moves that I’ve seen on youtube.”

After this win, the NJCAA collegiate wrestling standout changed gym to Jackson Wink MMA Academy and began his rise through the UFC. In 2011, he became the youngest champion in UFC history. Win an incredible list of wins over fighters such as Mauricio ‘Shogun Rua’ Daniel Cormier, Glover Teixeira, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Rashad Evans, and many others, Jones cemented his place as an all-time great in MMA history.

Live from Minneapolis, Minnesota, UFC 87 was headlined by Georges St-Pierre’s first title defense against the dominant wrestler Jon Fitch. The Canadian welterweight champion stopped his 16-fight win streak. Brock Lesnar had his second fight in the UFC and earned his first win in the organization against Heath Herring. Notably, Kenny Florian defeated Roger Huerta, giving him his first loss in the UFC.

Leon Edwards vs. Belal Muhammad at UFC 304

The English athlete Leon Edwards captured the title off of the powerhouse UFC champion Kamaru Usman, ending his reign with a fifth-round head kick. ‘Rocky’ has added two more title defences to his name since then. With his third title defence on the horizon, the 32-year-old fighter is setting his goals high; he wants to surpass the all-time great Georges St-Pierre.

The Canadian-born Georges St-Pierre won his title off of the welterweight great Matt Hughes with a stunning head kick. Eventually, ‘Rush’ would go on to have a whopping thirteen title wins to his name, including going up in weight and capturing a second-division championship. It wasn’t just the number though that made St-Pierre so great, it was also his complete and utter control of his opponents.

On July 27, Edwards will have a past opponent of his; Belal Muhammad at UFC 304. ‘Rocky’ is looking to build a legacy of greatness. During the UFC media day, Edwards explained, “He’s just another guy in the way, right? I’m chasing the great GSP’s record because he is another opponent in the way.” Leon Edwards added, “Everyone knows his gameplan will be to come out and try wrestling. But even his wrestling, it ain’t all that. He ain’t f**king Khabib [Nurmagomedov] or GSP, he’s Belal. Let’s see.”

UFC 304 will be one step in the ladder to greatness for England’s Leon Edwards.

Georges St-Pierre claims Islam Makhachev is the ‘Best pound-For-pound’ fighter after UFC 302

Georges St-Pierre claims Islam Makhachev is the best fighter pound for pound in the UFC right now

Former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion Georges St-Pierre has hailed Islam Makhachev as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

Makhachev is coming off his third defense of his lightweight title as he scored a fifth-round submission over Dustin Poirier. After the win, there was a debate if he or Jon Jones was the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. But, according to St-Pierre, he believes Makhachev is a top the list.

“He’s amazing,” St-Pierre said (via MMAFighting). “I think right now he’s the best pound-for-pound right now because of his last few performances. Just amazing. An amazing showcase of heart too, because he had a bad cut on his forehead, and Poirier gave him a tough time. Pushed the pace to the edge and I think that that fight is going to make Makhachev even better because these are the fights that make you grow.”

St-Pierre also thinks it will be a long time before Makhachev loses, if he ever does, as he calls the lightweight champ the best in the sport.

“I think in terms of skill, Makhachev right now is the best fighter, but that doesn’t mean if you’re the best that you always win,” St-Pierre said. “There’s a lot of other factors outside of our control that can influence the result. But I think Makhachev is the best, but even the best can lose sometimes.”

Georges St-Pierre says Islam Makhachev on track to being an all-time great

Islam Makhachev is currently 26-1 as a pro and coming off the win over Poirier. Although he has only defended his lightweight title three times, Georges St-Pierre says the Dagestani native is already on track to be one of the best ever.

“I think he’s already starting to get to that status because beating Volkanovski and now his last two performances are amazing,” St-Pierre said.

If Makhachev can continue to defend his belt, or win the welterweight title and become a champ-champ, it would only help cement his case.
