Georges St-Pierre claims Islam Makhachev is the best fighter pound for pound in the UFC right now

Former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion Georges St-Pierre has hailed Islam Makhachev as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

Makhachev is coming off his third defense of his lightweight title as he scored a fifth-round submission over Dustin Poirier. After the win, there was a debate if he or Jon Jones was the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. But, according to St-Pierre, he believes Makhachev is a top the list.

“He’s amazing,” St-Pierre said (via MMAFighting). “I think right now he’s the best pound-for-pound right now because of his last few performances. Just amazing. An amazing showcase of heart too, because he had a bad cut on his forehead, and Poirier gave him a tough time. Pushed the pace to the edge and I think that that fight is going to make Makhachev even better because these are the fights that make you grow.”

St-Pierre also thinks it will be a long time before Makhachev loses, if he ever does, as he calls the lightweight champ the best in the sport.

“I think in terms of skill, Makhachev right now is the best fighter, but that doesn’t mean if you’re the best that you always win,” St-Pierre said. “There’s a lot of other factors outside of our control that can influence the result. But I think Makhachev is the best, but even the best can lose sometimes.”

Georges St-Pierre says Islam Makhachev on track to being an all-time great

Islam Makhachev is currently 26-1 as a pro and coming off the win over Poirier. Although he has only defended his lightweight title three times, Georges St-Pierre says the Dagestani native is already on track to be one of the best ever.

“I think he’s already starting to get to that status because beating Volkanovski and now his last two performances are amazing,” St-Pierre said.

If Makhachev can continue to defend his belt, or win the welterweight title and become a champ-champ, it would only help cement his case.

UFC icon Georges St-Pierre given the Go-Ahead to resume combat sports: 'Finally got the green light'

Georges St-Pierre is back! Sort of.

After several months of healing and rehabbing from a shoulder injury, the UFC Hall of Famer revealed that he was given the “green light” to resume combat sports training.

“Finally today I got the green light from the Doc to start back to go live slowly in Combat Sport,” GSP wrote on X.

Before you get too excited, we should clarify that no, St-Pierre is not returning to the Octagon. Nor is he seeking a fight inside a ring, pit, squared circle, or Smart Cage.

Notice we didn’t say mat?

‘Rush’ was scheduled to return for a submission grappling match with Nick Diaz at UFC Fight Pass Invitational 5 in December 2023. Sadly, Diaz got injured. Then St-Pierre got injured resulting in the cancelation of the contest altogether.

Georges St-Pierre’s days of chasing championships are over

Fans are still holding out hope that the bout between ‘Rush’ and Diaz gets rebooked for some time in 2024, but it’s pretty safe to say that GSP’s days of chasing championships are all, but over.

“I miss sometimes, the adrenaline, the victory,” St-Pierre said during a Q&A at Bangtao Muay Thai & MMA in Thailand. “When you win a fight, there’s nothing that can come close to that, and unfortunately I will probably never have that feeling. I will never have that feeling again of winning another championship, and I miss that feeling. But that’s reality and I’m good with it. I have to accept it.

“Everything that goes up in life goes down. Everything in life, I believe is a cycle and you have to make peace with it. You have to accept it.”

Kamaru Usman mimicked St-Pierre for Johny Hendricks' fight camp: 'I was doing Georges better than Georges'

Kamaru Usman never had the chance to step inside the Octagon with UFC Hall of Famer Georges St-Pierre, but that didn’t stop the ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ from trying to become him.

During a recent appearance on the Pound 4 Pound podcast, Usman (who hosts the show alongside former two-division champion Henry Cejudo) revealed to St-Pierre that he was Johny Hendricks’ main training partner ahead of Hendricks’ epic encounter with ‘Rush’ at UFC 167 more than a decade ago.

Georges St-Pierre vs. Johny Hendricks

Going into the fight, Hendricks had won six straight and was looking to end St-Pierre’s dominant reign over the welterweight division. Usman, who had just kickstarted his own mixed martial arts career on the regional scene, was brought in to mimic GSP throughout Hendricks’ training camp.

“I actually studied you a lot even before I was actually, I think, in the UFC,” Usman told St-Pierre. “I studied you because when you fought — I don’t know if I told you this — when you fought Johny Hendricks, I was brought in, I was his main sparring partner at one point. I was brought in to mimic you. So I watched you a lot going in to help Johny Hendricks. … I had to commit.

“I thought I was doing Georges better than Georges. I’m throwing the Superman-low kick, I’m throwing all these things out. I’m shooting on him, I’m trying to take him down, because I knew you would try to take him down. It didn’t matter what his credentials were, Johny Hendricks is a [wrestling] champ, but I knew you would try to take him down. So I’d been studying you for a while” (h/t MMA Fighting).

To Usman’s credit, Johny Hendricks gave St-Pierre one of the toughest tests of his career. Hendricks came up short via a razor-close split decision. More than a decade later, pundits still argue that Hendricks did more than enough to unseat ‘Rush’ and claim the 170-pound crown.

However, Hendricks would go on to win the welterweight title four months later following St-Pierre’s first retirement from the sport.

Kamaru Usman Praises Georges St-Pierre

Over the years, St-Pierre’s historic reign has been compared to that of Kamaru Usman, who took the belt off Tyron Woodley at UFC 235. Usman never came close to matching GSP’s still-standing record of nine straight title defenses, but Usman does own the record for most consecutive wins in the division at 15 — a streak that ran from July 2015 to August 2022.

The ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ praised St-Pierre during their time together, noting the similarities in their pre-fight rituals. Specifically, the act of isolating themselves before a fight to focus on being mentally prepared.

“That is so surreal that you say that because I’ve never heard you say that, but I’m like — and I wasn’t taught these things — I do almost similar,” Usman said after listening to St-Pierre talk about his process before fighting. “Unfortunately, I lost the fight, Edwards, the second fight, because that fight I just had a lot of stress on me. But I was in the bathroom and I’m in the mirror and I was walking back and forth. I’m looking at the mirror because I’d look and I put myself in the scenario, and I’m talking to myself, but even before that, I do do that in my faceoff.

“That’s why most people, when they bring you back in, because most of us were main events for our last few fights, I’m sitting there, I’m crouched over, I’m talking in my head. They don’t hear me, but I’m talking in my head and I’m talking to the guy in my head, and then we back up and then it’s time to go. But it’s a mental process and I’m in this process the whole time and I think a lot of it has to do with preparation. It comes from preparations.”

Former undisputed lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov claimed it was “interesting” to hear former two-divivision titleholder, Georges St-Pierre predict a victory over him if they ever shared the Octagon together, having confirmed a potential super-fight was floated for 2020.

Nurmagomedov, a former undisputed lightweight champion and subsequent Hall of Fame inductee, retired from mixed martial arts competition four year ago, ending his illustrious career with a second round arm-triangle submission win against former interim champion, Justin Gaethje in the pair’s title unification bout.

Ending his career boasting a stunning 29-0 unbeaten record, Nurmagomedov has stressed his desire to remain retired from active competition in the aftermath of his exit from fighting – as well as coaching, however, St-Pierre revealed this week that a bout against himself was floated soon after he hung up his gloves.

“I think Khabib (Nurmagomedov) could have beat me, I’m not saying I could beat Khabib all the time,” Georges St-Pierre said. “I was confident enough to take that fight that I was thinking that if I take that fight, I’m going to beat him that day at that particular place, that doesn’t mean I will beat him all the time. But I was confident – maybe I’m wrong.”

“I think I would have beat him because if he would have come to put pressure on me, I would have put him down,” Georges St-Pierre explained. “I would have the confidence to try to go for it. …I think that I would have maybe been the first guy that he fought or one of the only guys that would have tried to put him down, and I’ve put down everybody that I’ve fought.”

Georges St-Pierre reveals scare with health condition led to UFC exit I thought I had cancer

Former two-division UFC champion, Georges St-Pierre has revealed that prior to the diagnosing of his battle with health condition, ulcerative colitis, he believed he was potentially dealing with cancer, forcing him to relinquish his middleweight title before retiring from active competition back in 2019.

St-Pierre, a former undisputed middleweight and welterweight champion, made a stunning return to the Octagon at UFC 217 in Madison Square Garden, turning in a spectacular fourth round rear-naked choke win over then-middleweight titleholder, Michael Bisping to win the title and mint himself as a duel-weight champion.

However, amid links to a title unification bout with Robert Whittaker in the aftermath of his win over Bisping, St-Pierre relinquished his crown at 185lbs, before revealing he was battling with a condition called ulcerative colitis.

“The reason why I really retired is because it took a lot out of me, and I started developing a condition called ulcerative colitis,” Georges St-Pierre said on the Pound-4-Pound podcast. “It’s an inflammation of the intestine and my last fight when I fought (Michael) Bisping, I tried to eat, to gain weight, and I have a very hard time gaining weight. I forced myself to eat and maybe the doctor told me that’s probably why I developed that.”

“When I got diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, in terms of stress, I got relieved, but also I started doing intermittent fasting, and it cured all my symptoms,” Georges St-Pierre explained. “I’m no longer on medication. I used to be on severe medication. I used go to the bathroom and it was a lot of blood, I thought maybe I had cancer.”

Linked with a return to the Octagon just a year after he retired from the sport, Hall of Fame star, St-Pierre revealed an offer was fielded to him to fight with former lightweight kingpin, Khabib Nurmagomedov, before the Russian retired – whom he claimed he would have likely beaten in a long-anticipated grudge fight.
