Gerald Meerschaert is willing to do “whatever it takes” to secure a rematch with the undefeated prospect, Khamzat Chimaev.

‘GM3’ squared off against Chimaev last month on the undercard of Colby Covington vs. Tyron Woodley. Meerschaert was somewhat fancied heading into the fight in what appeared to be the toughest fight of Chimaev’s short career.

On the night things didn’t go to plan for Meerschaert. Just 17 seconds into the fight Chimaev uncorked his first punch and it knocked the middleweight veteran out. The win earned Chimaev a headline spot for his next fight against #3 welterweight Leon Edwards on December 19.

In an interview with TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter, Meerschart remained adamant that he has what it takes to beat Chimaev and insisted he would do “whatever it takes” to secure a rematch.

“I genuinely don’t like that guy. I can’t exactly put my finger on it, just the way he carries himself. He doesn’t, I don’t know, there’s something that I don’t like. I don’t think he likes me either. And I think part of the reason I don’t like him is because he was acting like I said something disrespectful towards him. I don’t know if it’s because people were interpreting what I said to him incorrectly or something,” Meerschaert said.

“But the whole time I was like, I said he was good, I said I expected him to come forward and do all this other stuff. The only thing I said was that he was overlooking me and that he was going to face resistance and I didn’t hold up my end of the bargain on that, that’s 100 percent on me. I said something and I didn’t do it. And not only that, but me not liking the guy, that leaves a real bad taste in my mouth, and I’m going to do whatever it takes as far as stringing wins together to get back at that guy. If he wants to keep sitting up there and saying no one wants to fight me, eventually he’s going to run in that spot again, and I’ll be sitting there waiting for him.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

UFC prospect Khamzat Chimaev is looking to make a statement when he fights for the first time since July at UFC Fight Night: Covington vs. Woodley this weekend.

Chimaev impressed during his first two UFC bouts which took place on ‘Fight Island’ earlier this summer. The undefeated 26-year-old took out Welsh middleweight John Phillips in dominant fashion before quickly turning around and beating UFC newcomer Rhys McKee at welterweight even more impressively just 14 days later.

The Swedish fighter is now scheduled to fight long-time UFC middleweight Meerschaert on Saturday before taking on BJJ legend Demian Maia next month. Many including Meerschaert have found the double-booking to be disrespectful but Chimaev doesn’t seem to understand that notion.

“I don’t know why he’s disrespected,” Chimaev told reporters during the UFC Vegas 11 virtual media day. “Amateur boxing people go with five or six fights. I go fight here and now after one month, but I did in 10 days two fights. I don’t know why he feels like this.”

The two men have already bumped into each other at the fighter hotel and Chimaev told reporters exactly what went down.

“He speaks too much, he talks too much,” Chimaev said. “He say, ‘You disrespect me.’ I didn’t like that. I said, ‘I’m going to smash you, chicken.’ And he say nothing and I go from there.”

Come fight night Chiamaev doesn’t envisage the middleweight veteran causing him any problems

“I’m better everywhere,” Chimaev explained. “I’m better wrestling, I’m better grappling. I’m better in striking. No one going to stop me. … I don’t know what’s going to happen on Saturday night, but I’m going to go 100 percent to kill this guy. That’s what I know. With everything to finish him.’” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Ben Askren Not Sold On Khamzat Chimaev: ‘I Don’t Really Know What To Expect’

Former Bellator and ONE Championship titleholder, Ben Askren is yet to board the Khamzat Chimaev hype train and believes the undefeated prospect could suffer defeat at the hands of Gerald Meerschaert at UFC Vegas 11.

Speaking to Submission Radio ahead of the September 19 card headlined by his friend Tyron Woodley, Askren revealed he remains unconvinced by Chimaev. ‘Funky’ is not impressed by the level of opposition he has fought since joining the UFC earlier this year, he said.

“The hard part about it is, we saw him twice in the UFC. But the first guy he fought, John Phillips, he’s 1-4 in the UFC. So, he was very unsuccessful. And the second guy he fought was a new addition to the UFC. So, he has not won a UFC fight. And so it’s like, ok, well, he definitely smashed these guys, there’s no doubt about that, but are these guys Gerald Meerschaert level competition? And the answer to that, is no, they’re definitely not. So, sometimes people can look great against guys who aren’t as good, and then when they step into a little competition, it’s a lot harder. So, I don’t really know what to expect out of Chimaev. I know Gerald is really good, he’s really tough. But yeah, I don’t know about Chimaev yet.”

Askren believes Meerschaert may be able to withstand early pressure from Chimaev and pull of a monumental upset win this weekend, he explained.

“I think one of the things is, Gerald’s really hard to submit. He’s really hard to control. He never wrestled, but fairly solid wrestling. So, one of the things I can see happening for sure, is Chimaev comes out like a ball of fire and isn’t able to do the damage, isn’t able to get the submissions, and then Gerald starts taking over as the fight moves on. I can see that happening one hundred percent.”

Do you agree with Ben Askren? Could Gerald Meerschaert derail the Khamzat Chimaev hype train?
