Coming off of the biggest win of her professional mixed martial arts (MMA) career, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes is looking to capitalize off the momentum of her 48-second knockout win over Ronda Rousey in hopes of making UFC history.

With the addition of the new female 145-pound weight class by the UFC, Nunes tells TMZ Sports (via FOX Sports) that she’s looking to make history inside the Octagon, similar to what Conor McGregor did at UFC 205, by becoming the first female dual-weight champion in the promotion’s history:

“Honestly, I want to take a little time, enjoy it a little bit but I really look forward to this 145-pound belt,” Nunes said.“Maybe I’ll go up to fight for the 145-pound belt. We’ll see. Maybe I’m going to have two belts like Conor McGregor.”

McGregor once reigned as the UFC’s featherweight champion before challenging then-lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez for the 155-pound strap in the main event of UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden, in which he secured a second round knockout win to become the first dual-weight champion in UFC history. Now Nunes is looking to use that blueprint to make championship history of her own, by attempting to hold the women’s bantamweight and featherweight titles consecutively in the near future.

The inaugural featherweight title will be contested for between former UFC 135-pound champ Holly Holm and No 10-ranked bantamweight Germaine de Randamie in the main event of UFC 208 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. If Nunes could potentially secure a bout with the winner of that contest, she could get her chance at achieving female MMA greatness.

Do you think Nunes is deserving of the opportunity to make women’s history in the UFC?

For quite some time now Invicta FC featherweight champ Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino has been campaigning for the UFC to implement a female 145-pound division, and UFC President Dana White finally budged.

Sadly Justino could not make-weight in time to participate in the inaugural championship bout, and the match-up was made between former UFC bantamweight champion Holly Holm and Germaine de Randamie to collide for the historical feat. It was later revealed that ‘Cyborg’ failed an out-of-competition United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) test, and much speculation arose as to why she couldn’t make the 145-pound weight limit.

Dana White recently participated in a media scrum in Las Vegas this past weekend (Friday December 30, 2016) for the UFC 207 pay-per-view (PPV) event, courtesy of MMA Junkie, stated that deciding to make the female featherweight division has subsequently blown up in his face:

“Obviously, the plans that I had for 145 were just all – they didn’t go the way I thought it was going to go,” White said. “Both those girls wanted to fight Cyborg, right? And stylistically, they’re both great matchups for Cyborg. I actually like both of those fights. Germaine and Holly are both great fights for Cyborg.

“Cyborg got her 145-pound title in her division and that all blew up on me.”

While Justino’s first two UFC victories came at the catchweight of 140 pounds, White revealed that ‘Cyborg’ claimed she was open to cutting to 135 pounds to compete in the women’s bantamweight division when negotiation with former UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta:

“If you were in the discussions when she came on board,” White said, “she was 100 percent into cutting down to 135. And she met with Lorenzo (Fertitta) – her and Lorenzo met and they had conversations and her plan was to get to 135. Obviously, that’s the money division.

“Even at 145 pounds, it’s not really the money division. But maybe she could have turned it into something. But that was never the original plan.”

Although the plan was to build the featherweight division around ‘Cyborg’, White is till excited about the upcoming battle between Holm and Germaine, and will see how the division stacks up from here on out:

“Listen, Holly and Germaine will be a good fight,” White said. “It’s a good fight. I don’t know, I’ve got to see – the wheels are already in motion, so I’ve just got to see how this thing plays out and go from there.”

“That was never the plan, to do (women’s featherweight) either, but now we’re in,” White said. “We’ll see how that one goes, who knows, maybe one of these two will win the belt and we’ll find a contender. I don’t know, we’ll see how this whole thing plays out.”

What do you think will be the repercussions of ‘Cyborg’ most likely not being able to compete in the UFC’s new featherweight division? Will the division be able to survive?

TMZ Sports recently caught up with Dana White, where the celebrity-gossip website got the UFC President’s unfiltered reaction to the recent Cris Cyborg/USADA reports.

When discussing the fact that USADA notified the Invicta FC Featherweight (145-pound) Champion of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation on Thursday, the longtime UFC boss brought up her recent surprising call to turn down offers from the UFC to fight in the first-ever UFC Women’s Featherweight (145-pound) Championship bouts.

“First fight she had eight weeks to get ready,” White told TMZ Sports in the interview (see video above). “Second fight she had 11 weeks to get ready and the third fight she just turned down.”

“I thought it was just strange that she was turning down all these fights … not so strange now,” concluded White.

Holly Holm told The Buzzer that she hopes former opponent Ronda Rousey defeats Amanda Nunes in their UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship match in the main event of this month’s UFC 207: Nunes vs. Rousey pay-per-view.

Holm famously knocked out Rousey in “Rowdy” Ronda’s most recent Octagon appearance, and will herself be challenging to regain a UFC Title when she meets Germaine de Randamie to decide the first-ever UFC Women’s Featherweight Champion in the main event of UFC 208, the first PPV that will follow the Rousey-Nunes led UFC 207 show on 12/30.

If both Rousey and Holm win their respective fights, the possibility of the highly-anticipated Rousey-Holm rematch will once again be looming over the Women’s MMA landscape, with the stakes at their all-time highest, as it would also then become the first-ever Women’s “Champion vs. Champion” bout in UFC history.

Rousey meets Nunes for the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship in the main event of UFC 207 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, December 30th.

Holm meets de Randamie for the UFC Women’s Featherweight Championship in the main event of UFC 208 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on Saturday, February 11, 2017.

Join us here at MMANews.com on 12/30 and again on 1/11 for live round-by-round results coverage of both pay-per-views.

The UFC has decided to finally implement a female 145-pound division, something heavily campaigned for by Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino, and has granted former bantamweight champion Holly Holm and No. 11-ranked Germaine de Randamie the opportunity to win the inaugural belt.

Holm recently spoke to MMA Junkie about the exciting opportunity, something that ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ said she couldn’t refuse when approached with the chance:

“I guess I thought that it could be a step that would happen,” Holm said. “I just didn’t think I would be involved in it. I thought I would still be at the 135 (division).

“But gosh, this opportunity is right in front of me. How do you not take it?”

While Holm may have some unfinished business in the 135-pound division, suffering two straight losses since defeating Ronda Rousey for the bantamweight throne in Melbourne, she remains completely focused on the task at hand in her new division:

“You know, this is the fight that’s in front of me, and this is what I’m focused on,” she said. “How awesome to be able to fight for a new division and to be able to fight for the belt? Two belts, two different weight classes. That’s awesome.

“My goal obviously – who wants to gain a belt and then lose it? So (losing the 135-pound title) is definitely a sore spot for me, so I want to be able to fight for the 135-pound belt, as well, but that’s not something I’m of right now because I have this other opportunity in front of me.”

Ronda Rousey vs Holly HolmHolm’s ultimate goal in the sport is not only to win as many titles as she possibly can, but also make history by standing in a class of her own by conquering unheard of accomplishments:

“For me, it’s not necessarily about what other people think about me – it’s what I want,” she said. “And I want to be able to accomplish things that haven’t been accomplished before.”

Holm and De Randamie will meet for the inaugural women’s featherweight championship at UFC 208 live on pay-per-view (PPV), from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on February 11, 2017.

You must be new to MMA-That’s a statement being thrown around a lot right now…

After years of campaigning for a UFC women’s featherweight division, Cris Cyborg sees her requests granted in a strange twist of circumstances. Currently the Invicta FC 145-pound queen, and former Strikeforce champion, Cyborg has fought twice for the UFC at 140 pounds. Making that catchweight limit has proved far too risky for the Invicta boss, and now has led to complications both in health and her ability to even make featherweight. Essentially a direct result of her brutal weight cuts is a featherweight title fight Cyborg is missing out on.

According to the Brazilian wrecking machine, she was so ill after her latest weight cut that doctors couldn’t draw blood. UFC president Dana White stated Cyborg had ‘turned down two featherweight title fights,’ one with Germaine De Randamie, and one with Holly Holm. Cyborg responded by saying she needs at least 12 weeks to safely make weight, and neither of these offers provided that buffer. Then came last night’s big announcement, the opening of the UFC women’s featherweight division, and Cris Cyborg is not invited.

Holm vs. GDR

Unexpected? You could say that, some might question why the UFC is in such a hurry that they are making a 145-pound title fight without their best 145-pound fighter involved. Certainly Cyborg has attempted to clear this matter up, as she tells MMAFighting.com her opinion about Holm vs. GDR:

“I’m happy the UFC created my division. It’s been 11 years I’m fighting for women to have the same rights as men with several divisions. Everybody knows I’m the featherweight champion,” Cyborg said. “I’m undefeated for 10 years in my division. They put this belt only to sell the fight for the new MMA fans. For an example, Holly is coming off two consecutive losses and will fight for the belt. The real fight fans know what’s real.”

Catch 22

It appears that Cris Cyborg is somewhat caught in a trap right now. Perhaps with the inevitability that she’ll receive a crack at the new champion, this isn’t such a slap in the face. Then again, the upcoming inaugural 145-pound title fight at UFC 208 features a former champ coming off two straight losses. Cyborg likens this fight to the recent bout between Anthony Pettis and Max Holloway:

“I have no idea, there are no rules in MMA,” Cyborg said. “The last fight in the men’s 145-pound division, a 10-0 fighter fought a guy who was 1-5 in his last fights. Other fighters like me have to wait for a title fight. I’m fighting for my division for 10 years, and until yesterday Dana said there were no women. This is our reality.”

Currently GDR is 3-1 in the UFC, 7-3 overall, Holm is 10-2 overall, 3- in the UFC. Both title competitors combined wins equal Cybrog’s current unbeaten streak. The Brazilian has finished all but two of her victims, and even during Ronda Rousey’s reign as champion, many considered Cyborg as the best female fighter.

What do you make of the UFC’s decision-making process here?
