Jorge Masvidal is interested in a matchup with Gilbert Burns for his next fight.
“BMF” title holder Jorge Masvidal has been rallying for an outing with Conor McGregor in recent weeks. The two have gone back and forth online taking jabs at each other but there seem to be no concrete developments yet. With Masvidal currently unmatched with an opponent for his next bout, former title challenger Gilbert Burns offered his services for the seasoned veteran.
Burns went as far as to say that he’d be willing to pen a deal that prohibited takedowns, suggesting a standup war against the prolific striker.
In an appearance on The Fighter vs. The Writer podcast, Jorge Masvidal expressed his interest in taking on Gilbert Burns. He was against the idea of Burns not being able to use his grappling abilities and seemed respectful of the callout.
“I don’t want Gilbert to sign no contract that says no takedowns,” Masvidal said. “Do your game, my brother. Do what’s gotten you here. I know he’s a world champion in [Brazilian jiu-jitsu]. I’m trying to work on my grappling, always trying to get better. So do everything that God has allowed you to do and blessed you to do.”
He revealed that Burns was an opponent he was looking at before the chances of fighting McGregor came up.
“Definitely a fight that interests me,” Masvidal said. “Before the Conor fight came up, that’s the one that called me out and I was like, this is a guy that comes to fight.
“The whole world doesn’t know him but they will, because he comes to fight. He’s going to try and choke you out, knock you out, and just has a good style. I like the fight.” (ht MMA Fighting)
“Gamebred” is coming off a lopsided decision loss to Colby Covington at UFC 272 earlier in March. Following the loss, Masvidal took matters into his own hands, quite literally. He was alleged to have got into a physical altercation with “Chaos” outside a steak restaurant in Miami.
Masvidal allegedly walked up to Covington in a disguise and proceeded to sucker punch his once best friend. Covington reportedly chipped his front tooth and suffered damage to his Rolex. He chose to press charges against “Gamebred” and is currently in an ongoing legal battle. The 37-year-old Miami native is being accused of aggravated battery and criminal mischief, two felony charges he pleaded not guilty to.
While Masvidal is hopeful that he can return this year, he isn’t making any promises until things are confirmed.
“Once some of these legal issues I’ve got going on [are settled], I’m setting a date,” Masvidal said. “That’s another reason why we’re not setting dates right now, because I’ve just got to figure out some things and then we’ll lock it in.”
If a fight with Gilbert Burns comes to fruition, UFC welterweight star Jorge Masvidal won’t be agreeing to restrictions on the Brazilian’s grappling offense. While Masvidal remains one of the most prominent names in mixed martial arts, his form in the cage has dipped in recent years. Since a 3-0 2019 brought him to stardom,…

Since a 3-0 2019 brought him to stardom, “Gamebred” has gone in the opposite direction in terms of contention, falling to #6 in the rankings after two straight losses to Kamaru Usman and a defeat against arch-rival Colby Covington.
Although he has some legal issues to resolve before returning to the cage owing to his decision to allegedly sucker-punch Covington from behind weeks after their fight, Masvidal is still looking ahead to his next challenge.
And while he’s pinpointed MMA megastar Conor McGregor as the main target, Masvidal’s expectation that the Irishman will steer clear of him has led the veteran to identify a second choice, #4-ranked contender Burns.
The Brazilian has expressed immense interest in sharing the cage with Masvidal down the line, even going as far as to offer a no-takedown incentive to “Gamebred,” whose grappling deficiencies were exposed last time out against Covington.
“For me, what would make sense for me, is Jorge Masvidal,” Burns said during an interview with MMA Fighting. “That’s the fight that I want… It’s the fight that makes sense. That’s the one that’s going to get me going, motivate me, and I still believe I can beat the guy. That’s the fight that I want next, Jorge Masvidal.
“I can sign the contract — no takedowns,” Burns added. “Let’s just do it. I’m looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to putting on a show. Another crazy fight and another crazy finish, and I do believe I can strike with Jorge Masvidal.”
Burns has seemingly developed a tactic to be used when attempting to entice striking-heavy fighters into a bout with him, having made a similar offer to Nate Diaz earlier this year.
But while that time it fell on deaf ears, Masvidal has heard the Brazilian’s words and respectfully responded.
In a recent interview with MMA Fighting’s Damon Martin, Masvidal addressed his options moving forward.
When talk landed at discourse surrounding a potential date in the Octagon with Burns, “Gamebred” re-iterated his interest in the bout, but insisted that he wouldn’t want “Durinho” to limit his own game in the potential contest.
“No, no, no. I don’t want Gilbert to sign no contract that says no takedowns. Do your game brother, do what’s gotten you here,” Masvidal said. “I know he’s a world champion in BJJ. I’m trying to work on my grappling, always getting better. So, do everything that God has allowed you to do and blessed you to do.”
Evidently, Burns’ offer isn’t needed to draw Masvidal into the bout, with the Miami native further explaining why the Brazilian is such an appealing opponent for him, takedowns and all.
“It’s definitely a fight that interests me. Before the Conor fight came up, (Burns is) the one that called me out, and I was like, ‘Man, this is a guy that comes to fight.’ The whole world doesn’t know him, but they will because he comes to fight,” Masvidal stated. “I’d like to fight once some of these little issues that I’ve got going on (go away).”

Adrian Yanez has now accepted Gilbert Burns’ money for KOing Tony Kelley at UFC Austin last night.
Yanez got revenge for Burns and the rest of Brazil with a first-round knockout of Kelley on the UFC Austin main card. This came after Kelley made controversial remarks about Brazil while cornering Andrea Lee last month.
After the clip of Kelley’s comments went viral, Burns offered a cash prize to Yanez if he could finish Kelley at UFC Austin. After Yanez successfully passed the test, Burns appeared to keep his word.
“My guy [Adrian Yanez] representing [Brazil],” Burns tweeted. “DM me your Zelle or cash app! CONGRATS!!”
But Yanez appeared to be taking a more humble approach to his win over Kelley following their heated buildup. He allegedly declined Burns’ offer, as Burns shared in a follow-up tweet.
“Come on my guys! Make sure you push [Adrian Yanez] to accept the money he don’t want it! It’s been a fight,” Burns said.
Alas, Yanez would ultimately give in and has big plans on how he’ll be spending Durinho’s money.
“Big thank you to @GilbertDurinho definitely spending that on my son!! I greatly appreciate it.”
Yanez got the chance to fight in his home state this past weekend in Texas. He also garnered a big Brazilian fanbase entering his fight with Kelley and gave them plenty to celebrate.
Burns demanded an apology from Kelley following his comments, but Kelley instead blamed ‘cancel culture’ for the strong reaction to his corner advice.
Yanez is one of the most impressive bantamweight prospects in the UFC and will look to continue his climb in the division later this year.
Do you think Adrian Yanez should accept Gilbert Burns’ offer?
