Gilbert Burns

Popular welterweight contender Gilbert Burns claims he has now signed a bout agreement to fight the former champion, Tyron Woodley, on May 30. The fight has been long talked about and it now appears to be (almost) official.

Speaking on Twitter the Brazilian submission specialist confirmed he had signed his portion of the fight contract ahead of May 30, he wrote. “Bout agreement is signed! May 30th! Let’s go @ufc.”

Since March rumours have been swirling about a potential fight between the 170lb title chasers. They were supposed to meet on May 23 but the UFC has since pushed back that card until May 30 in the hope it will be able to take place at the UFC Apex Facility in Las Vegas pending clearance by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Burns is riding a three-fight win steak since moving up from lightweight to welterweight. The 33-year-old has picked up impressive wins over Alexey Kunchenko and Gunnar Nelson, as well as stopping Demian Maia in the biggest fight of his career at UFC Brasilia earlier this year.

Woodley, on the other hand, will be fighting for the first time since losing his welterweight title to Kamaru Usman in March 2019. ‘The Chosen One’ dropped a unanimous decision verdict at UFC 235 after holding the belt for several years. Woodley beat the likes of Darren Till, Stephen Thompson and Maia during his impressive reign as champion. He is now hoping to get back into title contention and it appears beating Burns is the first step to do that. However, right now, it remains unclear if Woodley has signed his bout agreement to make this fight official for May 30.

Welterweight contender Gilbert Burns has offered fill in for ‘Jacare Souza’ and fight Uriah Hall at UFC 249 tonight.

Burns made the offer after it was revealed ‘Jacare’ tested positive for the coronavirus and his fight against Hall was of course removed from the card. The UFC released a statement confirming the fight had been scrapped and that Souza, along with two of his team had tested positive for COVID-19, it read.

“The middleweight bout between Uriah Hall vs Jacaré Souza will no longer be on the UFC 249 preliminary card due to one of Souza’s COVID-19 tests indicating a positive result.

“In addition, COVID-19 tests for Souza’s two cornermen were also flagged as positive.  UFC’s medical team examined Souza and his two cornermen and found them to be currently asymptomatic, or not exhibiting the common symptoms of COVID-19.  As per UFC’s health and safety protocols, all three men have left the host hotel and will be self-isolating off premises, where UFC’s medical team will monitor their conditions remotely and will provide assistance with any necessary treatment.

“From their arrival earlier in the week until their departure today, Souza and his cornermen followed UFC health and safety protocols, including practicing social distancing, wearing personnel protective equipment, and self-isolating whenever possible.

“There have been no other positive COVID-19 tests reported from the remaining athletes participating in UFC 249.”

Burns took to social media to react to the unfortunate news and even offered to fill in for the coronavirus stricken ‘Jacare’, he wrote. “185 tomorrow I can do it! Why not? I’m already here in Jacksonville! #ufc249 I know a guy.”

The Brazilian submission specialist is rumoured to be fighting former welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley, in Las Vegas on May 23. Burns is coming off the biggest win of his career after stopping Demian Maia at UFC Brasilia earlier this year.

Former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is set to face Gilbert Burns in the main event on May 23.

Woodley was supposed to fight Leon Edwards to determine the 170lb number one contender, at UFC London in March. Unfortunately, the fight fella apart before the card was indefinitely postponed due to the ongoing global pandemic.

‘The Chosen One’ has since been chasing big fights with the likes of Israel Adesanya and Colby Covington. Now it appears he is set to headline later this month. UFC president Dana White told ESPN in he was in the final stages of making Woodley main event on May 23, he said.

“We’re working on a fight with (Woodley) right now. After these three dates, we’re coming right back. We’re going to do four fights in 14 days. After May 9, the UFC schedule is back on. We’re back on and running. We’re looking at a fight for Woodley. Woodley will probably be the fourth fight. He’ll be the main event.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Woodley later told Ariel Helwani that he is leaning towards accepting a fight against Burns who’s coming off the biggest win of his career. The Brazilian knocked out BJJ wizard Demian Maia at UFC Brasilia in March. Helwani broke the news on Twitter, he wrote.

“Spoke to Tyron Woodley today. He said he’s leaning towards accepting a main event fight against Gilbert Burns on May 23. Fight isn’t signed yet but it’s looking good at the moment, he said. “I waited as long I could for Colby,” he said. “But he doesn’t want it, so I’m moving on.””

Both fighters took to social media last night to say they had accepted the fight which has been on the table on several different occasions.

“To the 4th time this fight has been offered and for the 4th time I’m saying yes! May 23 main event,” Burns wrote. “Makes two of us,” Woodley responded.

Kamaru Usman: Tyron Woodley Holding Himself Back From Title Shot

Usman Woodley

UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman has urged Tyron Woodley to stop holding himself back and just compete.

Woodley hasn’t fought since losing his welterweight title to Usman at UFC 235 in March last year. He has since been scheduled to fight Robbie Lawler and Leon Edwards but both fights failed to come to fruition, the latter of which was due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Since then, Woodley has been campaigning for a rematch with Usman or a grudge match with bitter rival Colby Covington rather than facing Edwards who is notably on an eight-fight winning streak.

And Usman believes “The Chosen One” should start fighting the opponents he has been given rather than picking and choosing who he wants.

“This whole situation has kind of thrown a damper on things, but I feel like Tyron is holding himself back for god knows what,” Usman told MMA Fighting. “Cause you’re not getting any younger. You’re a talented guy. You’ve got a lot of skills. The only way for you to get back to the title is just to fight.

“Fight, guys. It doesn’t matter who you fight. Say yes to everybody. Go out there and fight, and I know he’s not saying yes to everybody.

“But say yes to anyone that they throw in front of you, and you go out there and knock out enough guys, guess what? They have no choice but to give you a title shot. This whole pick and choose who you want, this and that, that’s not working for you. Because the only thing you’re wasting is time.”

Usman even believes Woodley should follow the example of Gilbert Burns. Burns recently moved up to welterweight and has been open to fighting any opponent, even on short notice.

That attitude — along with winning his two most recent welterweight bouts — led to a high-profile fight with Demian Maia which Burns won at UFC Brasilia last month. As a result, he is now the No. 6 welterweight contender.

“That’s the approach you have to have,” Usman said. “The difference is Tyron is still hanging onto that mentality of being a champion and being accustomed to a certain kind of treatment. You’re not in that in that situation.

“You’ve got to approach it like Gilbert [Burns] is approaching it. You want to put someone in front of me, it’s an opportunity to make some money and knock somebody out. That’s why Gilbert has ascended the way that he has.”

Do you agree with Usman? Or do you believe Woodley deserves some leverage given that he was a former champion?
