It looks like Tyron Woodley has a dance partner and his name is Gilbert Burns. Combate is reporting that Woodley vs. Burns is indeed set for a UFC event in Las Vegas on May 23. This event will be held inside the UFC APEX. It’ll be the promotion’s first card in Las Vegas since March […]
Former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is set to face Gilbert Burns in the main event on May 23. Woodley was supposed to fight Leon Edwards to determine the 170lb number one contender, at UFC London in March. Unfortunately, the fight fella apart before the card was indefinitely postponed due to the ongoing global pandemic. ‘The […]
Former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is set to face Gilbert Burns in the main event on May 23.
‘The Chosen One’ has since been chasing big fights with the likes of Israel Adesanya and Colby Covington. Now it appears he is set to headline later this month. UFC president Dana White told ESPN in he was in the final stages of making Woodley main event on May 23, he said.
“We’re working on a fight with (Woodley) right now. After these three dates, we’re coming right back. We’re going to do four fights in 14 days. After May 9, the UFC schedule is back on. We’re back on and running. We’re looking at a fight for Woodley. Woodley will probably be the fourth fight. He’ll be the main event.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)
Woodley later told Ariel Helwani that he is leaning towards accepting a fight against Burns who’s coming off the biggest win of his career. The Brazilian knocked out BJJ wizard Demian Maia at UFC Brasilia in March. Helwani broke the news on Twitter, he wrote.
“Spoke to Tyron Woodley today. He said he’s leaning towards accepting a main event fight against Gilbert Burns on May 23. Fight isn’t signed yet but it’s looking good at the moment, he said. “I waited as long I could for Colby,” he said. “But he doesn’t want it, so I’m moving on.””
Both fighters took to social media last night to say they had accepted the fight which has been on the table on several different occasions.
“To the 4th time this fight has been offered and for the 4th time I’m saying yes! May 23 main event,” Burns wrote. “Makes two of us,” Woodley responded.
Who wins when Tyron Woodley and Gilbert Burns square off on May 23?
UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman has urged Tyron Woodley to stop holding himself back and just compete. Woodley hasn’t fought since losing his welterweight title to Usman at UFC 235 in March last year. He has since been scheduled to fight Robbie Lawler and Leon Edwards but both fights failed to come to fruition, the […]
UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman has urged Tyron Woodley to stop holding himself back and just compete.
Woodley hasn’t fought since losing his welterweight title to Usman at UFC 235 in March last year. He has since been scheduled to fight Robbie Lawler and Leon Edwards but both fights failed to come to fruition, the latter of which was due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Since then, Woodley has been campaigning for a rematch with Usman or a grudge match with bitter rival Colby Covington rather than facing Edwards who is notably on an eight-fight winning streak.
And Usman believes “The Chosen One” should start fighting the opponents he has been given rather than picking and choosing who he wants.
“This whole situation has kind of thrown a damper on things, but I feel like Tyron is holding himself back for god knows what,” Usman told MMA Fighting. “Cause you’re not getting any younger. You’re a talented guy. You’ve got a lot of skills. The only way for you to get back to the title is just to fight.
“Fight, guys. It doesn’t matter who you fight. Say yes to everybody. Go out there and fight, and I know he’s not saying yes to everybody.
“But say yes to anyone that they throw in front of you, and you go out there and knock out enough guys, guess what? They have no choice but to give you a title shot. This whole pick and choose who you want, this and that, that’s not working for you. Because the only thing you’re wasting is time.”
Usman even believes Woodley should follow the example of Gilbert Burns. Burns recently moved up to welterweight and has been open to fighting any opponent, even on short notice.
That attitude — along with winning his two most recent welterweight bouts — led to a high-profile fight with Demian Maia which Burns won at UFC Brasilia last month. As a result, he is now the No. 6 welterweight contender.
“That’s the approach you have to have,” Usman said. “The difference is Tyron is still hanging onto that mentality of being a champion and being accustomed to a certain kind of treatment. You’re not in that in that situation.
“You’ve got to approach it like Gilbert [Burns] is approaching it. You want to put someone in front of me, it’s an opportunity to make some money and knock somebody out. That’s why Gilbert has ascended the way that he has.”
Do you agree with Usman? Or do you believe Woodley deserves some leverage given that he was a former champion?
Donald Cerrone has said he’ll be waiting for the call to fight at UFC 249 at either lightweight or welterweight. UFC 249 is set to take place on April 18 at a location yet to be disclosed. The card was originally set to go down in Brooklyn, New York but a state wide ban on […]

has said he’ll be waiting for the call to fight at UFC 249 at either
lightweight or welterweight.
UFC 249 is set to take place on April 18 at a location yet to be disclosed. The card was originally set to go down in Brooklyn, New York but a state wide ban on mass gatherings amid the coronavirus pandemic has meant a switch in the venue is necessary.
The UFC has been forced to postpone cards in London, Columbus, and Portland but Dana White is adamant he won’t be delaying anymore. He won’t need to if guys like Cerrone keep putting there hands up to fight despite the ongoing global crisis.
‘Cowboy’ hasn’t fought since losing to Conor McGregor inside one minute at UFC 246 in January. The promotions most winningest fighter is currently on a three-fight losing streak after previous defeats to top contenders Justin Gaethje and Tony Ferguson.
The 51-fight MMA veteran is keen to get back in the octagon and help save UFC 249, posting to Instagram he made that much clear.
This social media post caught the eye of one particular welterweight who has been gunning for a fight lately, despite having just competed at UFC Brasilia. Gilbert Burns knocked out Damien Maia inside one round in the company’s last event – which was held behind closed doors due to a government decree.
Since that win, Burns seems desperate to get straight back in the cage as soon as possible. He offered himself forward to fill in for Leon Edwards at the ill-fated UFC London card and has now called out ‘Cowboy’ to fight at UFC 249.
Gilbert Burns believes Tyron Woodley is not the same fighter as he used to be. The welterweight contender said Woodley turned him down for the UFC London card that ended up being postponed. Burns also believes the former champion is not as committed to fighting anymore with his rapping, acting and TMZ career going on. […]
Gilbert Burns believes Tyron Woodley is not the same fighter as he used to be.
“The guy used to be a beast, he looked scary, but who’s that guy?” Burns told MMA Junkie. “He doesn’t look like that anymore. Last time we saw him in the octagon, he didn’t look like that. He looks bad. Even his corner was like, ‘Bite that mouthpiece and move forward,’ and he was still waiting for Usman; he was just broke.
“And that’s Tyron Woodley right now. He has so much distraction in his life right now with TMZ, rapping, acting, the whole thing. I think he’s just surrounded himself with egos and famous people. He’s changed, I believe he’s not the same anymore.”
Given the fight was offered, Gilbert Burns says he hopes to fight Tyron Woodley next. With his teammate and friend, Kamaru Usman being the champion it has put the Brazilian in a tough position.
But, if Woodley doesn’t want to fight, Burns has other options.
“That’s who I want next, but probably he’s going to keep doing what he’s doing and keep ducking me,” Burns said. “That’s why I love Kamaru (Usman) and I have all the respect for him because he earned his position fighting.
“So if that guy don’t want to fight me, I’m available, I’m going to keep fighting. If (Michael) Chiesa is next, then Chiesa is next. If ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson is next, then he’s next. I’m going to keep beating these guys until I get to him. But I don’t know, I just have a feeling I’m fighting Tyron Woodley this year. I think he might fight Leon Edwards again or fight Colby (Covington), that’s the fight that he wants, but I’m going to campaign for it so hard. That’s who I want next.
“I believe he’ll fight Leon Edwards or Colby and I believe both of these guys can beat Tyron Woodley. Tyron Woodley is almost 38, 39, if I’m not wrong. His whole ego has grown so much I can see right now the way he talks. He’s mixing the ego with confidence just being a rapper. I think he’s done, if he fights Leon Edwards or Colby, he’s going to lose, then I want him after my next fight.”

Oliveira defeated Kevin Lee via third-round submission in the main event of UFC Brasilia this past weekend. It made it seven wins in a row for “Do Bronx” and his reward was being installed into the top 10 of the lightweight rankings.
The Brazilian is now ranked No. 8 at 155 pounds as he jumped up five places. He is behind Paul Felder at No. 7 who notably defeated him when they met back in 2017.
Burns also moved into the top 10.
“Durinho” earned the biggest win of his career when he defeated Demian Maia via first-round TKO in the co-main event of UFC Brasilia. It made it three wins in a row since returning to the 170-pound division last year while he has also won seven of his last eight outings.
As a result, he has climbed up six places in the welterweight rankings to sit at No. 6 just behind former title challenger Stephen Thompson who is at No. 5.
