Gilbert Melendez made his return to the Octagon this past weekend (Sat. July 6, 2019) in Las Vegas.

“El Nino” was bested by Arnold Allen on the ESPN prelims for UFC 239 via unanimous decision. With the defeat, Melendez is now on a five-fight losing streak. He has only won one fight under the UFC banner, that fight being his second bout with the promotion against Diego Sanchez back in 2016. Melendez also lost his promotional debut back in April of 2013 against Benson Henderson via split decision.

Prior to joining the UFC, Melendez was a longtime reigning Strikeforce lightweight champion. In light of his recent defeat, the 37-year-old took to Instagram to issue a statement. Here’s what he had to say:

“Huge thanks to my team and all my loyal followers. You guys will never know how much your support has meant to me over the years. Things didn’t go my way but when you have the opportunity to chase a great moment or take on a challenge I suggest you face it and go for it.

“Even in defeat I know this experience will help me grow as a martial artist and as a person. At the end of the day I am happy , I am blessed , I am healthy , I am loved , I leveled up and I had a dang great time out there competing!!! Arnold is a great competitor , is a difficult target to find in the cage and I wish him the best in his fighting future .

“As for me I’m looking forward to now investing more of my time into my team and of course I will continue my studies as a student of martial arts. The journey will continue for #teamElNiño and the #skrappackbecause we are deep.”

It looks like Nick Diaz could be training for a return to mixed martial arts (MMA) competition.

Teammate Gilbert Melendez was recently interviewed by reporter Gareth Davies in California, and “El Nino” revealed the older Diaz brother is in Lodi getting some training in. Melendez added he has a feeling Diaz is getting ready for something, but he’s not quite sure what for:

”Nick is back in Lodi,” Gilbert said. “He’s a ninja. I have a feeling he’s getting ready. I don’t know what for. It could just be for himself personally, but I think he might be getting into shape and getting back into a routine of training.”

Diaz has been enjoying life for the past several years since not having fought since 2015. He took on Anderson Silva in a five-round main event, which ended in a No Contest after both fighters ran into drug testing issues. In his absence, younger Diaz brother, Nate, has emerged as a huge UFC star following his feud with Conor McGregor.

Nate is scheduled to return to the Octagon after a three-year absence in August at UFC 241 against Anthony Pettis. As for Nick, his fighting career remains in question, apart from Diaz recently claiming he didn’t want to hurt anyone anymore.

Gilbert Melendez is finally ready to make his return to the Octagon.

UFC announced on their Canadian Twitter page that “El Nino” will be facing Arnold Allen at the UFC 239 pay-per-view (PPV).

The show goes down from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 6. It’s one of the most stacked cards of the year, headlined by Jon Jones vs. Thiago Santos for the light heavyweight title:

Melendez is currently on a four-fight losing streak. He hasn’t fought since dropping a unanimous decision to Jeremy Stephens back in September of 2017. In another interesting stat, Melendez hasn’t won a fight since 2013 when he bested Diego Sanchez in a classic war at UFC 166.

That was the only victory of his UFC run since joining the promotion that same year. He’ll take on Allen, an intriguing prospect currently on a seven-fight win streak. Allen has won all five of his UFC appearances, the latest being a unanimous decision over Jordan Rinaldi in March.

Now, he has the chance to knock off one of the most respected veterans in the sport when he faces Melendez this summer.
