Former MMA fighter Gina Carano was asked her thoughts on the current state of the women’s bantamweight division in the UFC recently on Twitter.

With Miesha Tate holding the title, some wonder if a third encounter with Ronda Rousey is in store should the champion successfully defend her title in July at UFC 200 vs. Amanda Nunes.

There is also the Holly Holm card sitting out there, as the former champion has lost just once – to Tate – and holds the only win over Rousey so far.

And Cris “Cyborg” Justino is set to make her UFC debut this Saturday at UFC 198, possibly adding her name to the talk. Cyborg was the last person to face Carano, besting her in Strikeforce.

Producers involved with the remake of the 1980s cult classic film, “Kickboxer,” continues to generate interest in the movie loaded with MMA stars, as the first look of the “Tong Po” character portrayed by one-time MMA fighter and former WWE Superstar Dave Bautista has hit the internet.

Featured below is an action shot of the WWE star best known as “Batista” in his full “Tong Po” get-up from a scene shot for the film.

“Fans of Jean-Claude Van Damme have been waiting for a long time for this reboot of the Kickboxer franchise,” said RLJ Entertainment’s Chief Acquisitions Officer Mark Ward. “The film delivers more action and an amazing ensemble of fighters from Dave Bautista to George St-Pierre to Cain Velasquez and Gina Carano. Fans will not be disappointed.”

CagePotato Ban: Talking About, or Even Hinting At the Possibility of Gina Carano’s Return to MMA

You see this photo? It was posted by Zoila Frausto over the weekend, with the caption “Today’s training session @csagym was with these two!! They were awesome and I feel so fortunate!” On the right is none other than former Strikeforce featherweight champion Gina Carano.

As you might expect, this photo has led to rampant speculation that “Conviction” might be returning to MMA, but for realz this time. And we are here to say that not only is Carano not returning to MMA, but that we as a community need to stop discussing or even hinting at the idea of Carano fighting in the UFC, Bellator, WSOF, Titan FC, or the long defunct YAMMA pit fighting. In fact, it is far more likely that YAMMA pit fighting will experience a renaissance than Ms. Carano’s MMA career, so for the good of us all, we need to let her go quietly into that good night.

Look, we’ll readily admit to partaking in this fool’s pursuit before. We’ve arguably been the worst offenders of the bunch. I guess you could say we’ve got a soft spot for memorable personalities like Carano, what with her proclivity for lip bite gifs and general adorableness. And for a minute there, it seemed as if a Carano return to MMA was actually on the table. “I’ll be signing Gina Carano next week,” Dana White told us, and despite everything we’ve come to learn about him, we believed it. And oh, how it hurt when those negotiations inevitably fell through.

And I know what you’re thinking, “But Jared, if Kimbo can return to the game after a half decade absence, why not Carano?” Well, 1) Because Kimbo has at least been keeping busy crushing cans in the boxing ring since leaving MMA and 2) Because Kimbo doesn’t have a burgeoning film career to worry about (though in all honesty, he should). I know the UFC’s re-signing of Mirko Cro Cop has led many of us to believe that we might be entering a mid-2000′s throwback era of MMA, but Carano’s return to the game is simply too good to be true. It always has been.

The point is, it’s over. Carano has moved onto bigger, better things, and she isn’t coming back. She hasn’t fought in the better part of a decade. She has five film projects lined up for this year alone, and seems well on her way to establishing herself as one of the most ass-kickingest women in Hollywood. And most importantly, no amount of money that the UFC could possibly offer her we be enough to rectify the absolute embarrassment she would suffer at the hands of Ronda Rousey. I mean, can you even imagine how quickly that fight would be over? The UFC would have to enact some kind of EliteXC/Seth Petruzelli deal just to ensure that Carano would last longer than Alexis Davis: an actual, current MMA fighter who Rousey treated like so:

So please, legitimate MMA media, stop biting the idea of Carano’s return sinker, tackle box, and canoe (to borrow a phrase from Tito Ortiz). You’re only embarrassing yourself with this clickbait nonsense. What was it that Red said about Andy Dufresne after he escaped Shawshank prison?

“I have to remind myself that some birds aren’t meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice. But still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they’re gone.”

Yeah…all of that. (*cries*)

FilmPotato: Gina Carano Lands Role as “Vixen” in Kickboxer Remake

(Needless to say, the casting agents were “empress wid their performance.” I’ll see myself out. via Getty)

When it was announced that we would be seeing a Kickboxer remake starring Georges St. Pierre and Dave Bautista back in May, I had the totally reasonable reaction of threatening to “eat a baby” if a remake of The Raid was also announced, which happened just days later. True to my word, I am now on something of a hiatus from public life, and would just like to let Mrs. Annabelle Smith of 247 Bakersfield Road, MN know that it was nothing personal.

Aaaaaaanyway, a press release sent out by Radar Films earlier this week (which we would have brought to you yesterday had CP’s mainframe not imploded) announced that another familiar face to MMA fans would be joining the project as well: former Strikeforce champ and In the Blood star Gina Carano. Carano has been cast as “Vixen”, a fight promoter and “boa constrictor of this fighting jungle” who hopefully wears outfits like this and bites her lip a lot.

More details on the Kickboxer remake/relevant gifs are after the jump.

Random thought: Remember when Gina Carano was supposedly signing with the UFC? Yeah, me neither.

The Kickboxer remake was briefly set to also star Tony Jaa in the “Master Chow” role until a scheduling conflict forced him out of the film. Taking his place will be none other than original Kickboxer star (and close friend of St. Pierre) Jean Claude Van Damme, who signed onto the film last week. I can only hope that they change the character’s name in light of this, but then again, seeing Van Damme attempt to play Taiwanese would be as hilarious as, well, his attempts to play American.

I’ll say it again because it’s even more relevant now, but if this movie doesn’t feature some sort of capoeira-infused dance off between St. Pierre and Van Damme, it will have been an entirely pointless endeavor.

Gina Carano and Georges St-Pierre Cast for Roles in ‘Kickboxer’ Remake

It appears Georges St-Pierre and Gina Carano are going to stick to taking fake punches for paychecks…at least for a bit longer.

The former MMA champions were both recently cast in the remake of the 1989 Jean-Claude Van Damme classic Kickboxer, which ultimately played a large part in the action star’s rise to popularity. According to a press release from JAZO PR, the two mixed martial arts superstars will join an ensemble cast of additional standouts from the combat sports realm that includes Bellator’s middleweight knockout artist Joe Schilling and former WWE star Dave Bautista

“JCVD” will not be rehashing his role as Kurt Sloane in the film, but the action movie staple has signed on for a major role in the remake. And while the role St-Pierre will play in the Thailand-based movie has yet to be made public, the former Strikeforce women’s featherweight champion will play a fight promoter per a press release from the production company to MMA Mania.

The film began shooting this week in New Orleans and will put some distance between talk of St-Pierre and Carano returning to the cage. While the talk around the pound-for-pound great coming out of his self-imposed retirement has been loose and noncommittal, there has been substantially more heat attached to Carano coming back to MMA.

Back in July, UFC president Dana White teased that the promotion was close to signing “Conviction” to face dominant 135-pound champion Ronda Rousey later in the year. With Rousey’s growing popularity and Carano‘s already established star power, the bout would undoubtedly be the biggest fight in the history of WMMA, yet after White was unable to lock down an agreement with the former women’s champion, the deal that was tabled apparently dissolved.

Carano last fought back in 2009, and with Hollywood continuing to offer movie roles, her potential return to mixed martial arts still remains uncertain.
